7th Anniversary Celebration! It’s that time of year again, when we wish V!VA Pickering a happy anniversary! Celebrating seven amazing years, we hosted a fabulous Mid Summer Night’s Dream themed party, where the main floor was decorated to look like a beautiful, enchanted garden. The Lifestyles Team and our Community Members spent the month of July handcrafting all of the decorations; our flower and vine trellises, flower bud hair wreaths, fairy light mason jars and much more! The Culinary Services Team served up some refreshing sangrias while the V!VAlicious kitchen prepared delicious pork and venison style sliders, springrolls, potato skins and cannolis for all you sweet lovers. We were entertained by a live band whose jazz sounds got everyone tapping their toes and dancing! A garden photo booth where everyone got to show off their best garden party outfits, marked memories for years to come. We want to thank everyone who helped out with this event, and want to thank the Community Members for making V!VA Pickering an amazing place to live, love and laugh.

Ocala Winery LuncheonLast month, we drove up to Port Perry to visit the family owned Ocala Winery. Specializing in wine from various apples and fruits, we were treated to a five course lunch right inside their century-old barn wine shop. A home cooked meal was served and paired with some of their delicious wine. During lunch, we were entertained with the history of the winery, and how it came to be. After indulging a hardy meal which included roast beef, chicken, potatoes, veggies, and homemade strawberry pie, we sat outside and enjoyed the scenic views of all of the apple trees. We had an amazing time, and look forward to going back again!Toasting to authentic traditions.
Good fun was had by all.
We danced the day away...
and made more memories.

THE 7 BEST BLACK-AND-WHITE MOVIES IN THE HISTORY OF CINEMA
Over the last few decades, black and white films have been somewhat abandoned. Yet when it comes to the history of cinematography, the medium encapsulates numerous masterpieces and continues to define the film genre today. With September seeing the return of the Toronto International Film Festival, Canada’s most prestigious foray into film fandom, we thought we’d share this list of...
All About Eve (1960)One of the greatest screenplays ever written, All About Eve is about female companionship, ambition, manipulation and betrayal; it is an elegant and terribly funny story about an aspiring actress, which remains one of Bette Davis’ most famous roles.
To Kill A Mockingbird (1962)Harper Lee’s literary classic is brought to life with wonderful accuracy and dedication to the original work. The story focuses upon a lawyer, Atticus Finch, portrayed by Gregory Peck in an Academy Award winning Performance, who defends a black man against a false charge. Echoing the social issues of 1960s America, the movie has themes of racial discrimination, moral tolerance, childhood innocence and human resilience.
Casablanca (1942)Casablanca is a timeless love story and a thrilling adventure set in Moroccan Casablanca during the early part of World War II. It remains one of the most quotable movies and one of the greatest romantic dramas ever produced; it follows the story of an American expatriate who reunites with a former lover.
The Seventh Seal (1957)Ingmar Bergman’s Swedish masterpiece concerns an exhausted and disillusioned knight returning playing a game of chess with Death. The Seventh Seal is a dream-like epic which questions the meaning of life, and existence against the chilling backdrop of the Black Plague. With haunting cinematography that will ensure Bergman’s mesmerizing vision remains with you forever, the strong performances and stunningly executed themes succeed in creating a darkly beautiful work.
Sunset Boulevard (1950)Sunset Boulevard is an insightful combination of film noir and black comedy about an ageing silent-film star who traps a young screenwriter. Ultimately, the movie portrays Tinsel Town as nothing but a land of dreams. The story is rife with fantastic performances and comedic moments, ensuring that this is one of the greatest black-and-white films ever made.
Metropolis (1926)Fritz Lang’s legendary masterpiece has defined the science fiction genre since its release in the first half of the twentieth century. In a futuristic city divided between the rich and the poor, the son of a wealthy city planner falls in love with a lower class prophet. With stunning images and timeless themes, Metropolis is greatly regarded as marking the beginning of modern cinema, and is a cautionary tale of a future dominated by machines.
Psycho (1960)Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho is follows a secretary who steals a large amount of money, ends up in a motel and is then mysteriously murdered – to this day, the “shower scene” terrifies audiences. Often imitated, parodied, analyzed, and referenced, it is no wonder that Psycho remains ahead of the game in the horror genre.
