Part Two: Practical Task:
The follow power point includes ten occupations that I believe are significant
and important contributors to my occupational identity.
FAMILY:
Family is an imperative part of
my occupational identity. I
strongly value my family as
they have provided me with
support, opportunities, discipli
ne and have helped shape me
to be the person I am today.
Being part of my family
provides me with a sense of
belonging. It has provided me
with necessary contribution of
social interaction, mutual
support, friendship and a sense
of being included to
occupational performance and
life satisfaction. My family has
also guided my ‘becoming’
during my life period as I have
learnt from them which
contributes hugely to my
future self.
HOCKEY:
One significant part of my occupational
identity includes hockey as it is a sport I
have played for the majority of my life. I
started playing hockey when I was four
years old and continued playing until I
finished college and moved to Dunedin. I
was strongly influenced by my mum
because it was a huge part of her life so
was encouraged to play. Hockey provides
me with a sense of ‘doing’ as it is an
occupation that is goal orientated and
provides me with meaning. It has also
given me a sense of ‘belonging’ as I am
part of a team. I believe that although
the team will not stay together or be the
same forever it is always going to be a
significant group that I will include when
identifying myself through occupations.
Hockey has provided me with a variety of
skills which have influence on my
‘becoming’.
SWIMMING:
Swimming for me is a leisure activity that I recognise as being part of my occupational identity.
It is an occupation which I do for fitness, when socializing and also when exploring. I only
normally go swimming when it is summer time as that is when the water is warmest. I go
swimming at all different kind of places but I enjoy swimming in the river the most. It is a fun
activity I like to do with friends and family when socializing and getting away from stressful
things in my life
STUDENT/STUDYING:
After finishing college I moved from Nelson to Dunedin to study for three years as an occupational
therapy student. This was a huge transition in my life and I now see it as being a large part of my
present occupational identity. Being a student has provided me with a sense of belonging as I am
associated to a specific group who are working to achieve the same things and are hoping to
graduate after three years. I recognise this occupation as being an important part of my becoming
as it is through my study that shapes my future job as being an occupational therapist.
FRIENDS:
I enjoy spending time with my friends on a regular basis as it has significant meaning to
me. Being around my friends provides me with a sense of belonging as I am around
people who I feel extremely content and happy with. This is an important part of my
occupational identity as it is an occupation that I have done in the past, present and
will continue in the future. It provides me with meaningful relationships.
CAPOEIRA :
Capoeira is a new occupation that I
have only recently started
participating in. It is an occupation
which involves dance and mirroring
movements with a partner. I have
found this to be a very different and
interesting occupation which pushes
me to learn new skills, roles and
rules. It is part of my occupational
identity but I don’t believe it is a
significant part because I do not
have a great understanding of it nor
do I find myself having a connection
with the specific group members
yet.
FOOD:
Food is an important part of my
occupational identity as it goes
beyond biological motivation
because it also holds
social, symbolic and spiritual
meanings. Food is a large part of
my life because it is a necessary to
maintain a healthy life style but is
also an occupation which brings
my family and friends together
during social events. It has a
symbolic meaning to me as for
every birthday that a family
member has a cake is made to
celebrate the person special day.
EXPLORING:
I thoroughly enjoy exploring and going to new places that I have never been before. I love going
sight-seeing and finding new beaches that I can relax and not worry about other things while
I’m there. I acknowledge this as being part of my occupational identity as it provides me with
places where I am able to reflect, be introspective or meditative, to discover one’s self and
enjoy being with special people.
FARMING:
I have lived on a farm with my family ever since I was a young child which has created farming
to be part of not only my individual occupational identity but my family’s as well. Farming takes
up a lot of time as the animals require daily attention. It is an occupation that my family does
for leisure as we all like animals and enjoy working outside. This occupation provides my family
and I with a sense of belonging as we all connect and are known for owning and working on the
farm.
