The First Scuba Device

• In 1772, Frenchmen, Sieur Freminet invented The Rebreathing Device that recycled the exhaled air from inside a metal barrel.

• This was the first self-contained air device.

• Freminet died from lack of oxygen after being in his own device for twenty minutes.

Chemical Dumping• It wasn’t until 1972 that

the U.S banned dumping chemical weapons into the ocean.

• 32,000 tons of nerve and mustard agents had already been dumped into the ocean waters off the United States.

• 26 chemical weapon dump sites in the ocean

• The effects on the ocean are unknown but if it leeks it will last up to 6 weeks before being broken down into something nonlethal

Free Diving• Free diving has been around as far back as 4500 b.c.

when people had to dive to find food and seashells or whatever they needed for survival.

• Korean woman used to dive to the sea floor to collect pearls and sponges.

• In 1911 in the Aegean sea, an Italian flag ship dropped anchor.

• Anchor snapped and was lost under 77 meters of ocean.

• Several days of unsuccessful attempts lead to the captain searching for someone who could

fish with dynamite. • Yorgos locate the anchor and passed a rope through it

so that the crew could retrieve it.• Thus becoming the first deep diver in history.

The first Underwater Pictures

• The first photos taken of the sea was of the ocean floor by Kenneth L. Hunkins, Bruce C. Heexen,and Robert J. Menxies in 1946

• They took pictures of the Arctic Ocean floor

• They noted that their was a lack of life in every aspect.

• Using sand from the ocean floor as the base as well as rock.
