Principal – Mr Martin Gill Email – [email protected] Website – www.oceanshore-p.schools.nsw.edu.au OPERATION DOLPHIN: I am inspiring – I pick up equipment when I see it. IMPORTANT! Festival of The Imagination – Saturday 26 th August Our Festival Of The Imagination rapidly approaches. Be sure to include the date in the family’s calendar. A small band of organisers has been working to ensure it’s a great day for all our families. Kindergarten 2018 We look forward to meeting our new families at our Kindergarten information session on Thursday between 9.30am and 11.30am. Whooping Cough - Pertussis There have been more confirmed cases of whooping cough in our community. Please be sure to seek medical advice immediately if your child presents with any of the following symptoms: Whooping cough usually begins like a cold with a blocked or runny nose, tiredness, mild fever and a cough. The cough gets worse and severe bouts of uncontrollable coughing can develop. Coughing bouts can be followed by vomiting, choking or taking a big gasping breath which causes a "whooping" sound. The cough can last for many weeks and can be worse at night. Some newborns may not cough at all but they can stop breathing and turn blue. Some babies have difficulties feeding and can choke or gag. Older children and adults may just have a cough that lasts for many weeks. They may not have the whoop. http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/infectious/factsheets/pages/pertussis.aspx Learning Management and Business Reform (LMBR) Our administrative staff are busily preparing for the new financial component of the LMBR roll out. This has meant a huge increase in workload and some changes to how we manage finance. Please note that, due to the complexity of the new system, the office will not be processing payments from 24 th August to September 11 th inclusive (longer than previously advertised). This will include the uniform shop. I would like to acknowledge the professionalism and work ethic of our wonderful administrative staff! Dental Assessments Due to a large number of students in Kindergarten to Year 2, the dental assessment is scheduled for students in kindergarten and Year 2 only. Unfortunately, if your child is in Year 1 and they have returned their permission note, we apologise and hope to offer the service to them next year. Martin Gill (Rel. Principal)

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING: Zone Athletics Carnival Good luck to our students competing in the Zone Athletics Carnival at Cavanbah Fields on Friday. Operation Art Congratulations to Zia Mowbray, Lulu Warlow and Layla Rose who had their entries selected to be shown at the statewide ‘Operation Art’ exhibition at the Armory Gallery at Sydney Olympic Park between 9th September and 29th October. Well done Aysha! Over 1600 children participated in this competition, making the judges’ task very difficult. There were so many beautiful, creative and thought provoking works, and only a tiny proportion of those entries were able to be chosen for the final exhibition. Aysha Scalas in 3H designed a gorgeous artwork on the Golden Tipped Bat, titled ‘Moonbeam’. Her entry has made it into the finals and will quite likely be in the exhibition at Surry Hills. As a finalist, she will be in the running to win competition prizes. Her original artwork will be professionally photographed and printed for the exhibition. .

L-R: Lulu, Zia and Layla will have their works displayed at the Operation Art Exhibition in Sydney Aysha’s ‘Moonbeam’

STAFF MESSAGES: ES1 and Stage 1: Free dental assessments will be conducted for Kindergarten and Year 2 on Wednesday and Friday this week. Notes must be returned for your child to take part. Kindergarten excursion notes to Fleay’s Wildlife Park must be returned by Monday 21st August.

Stage 2: Year 4 Hangout week 6 Thursday 24th August – please return notes by this Friday, if we have insufficient interest the Hangout will not run

Stage 3: Please ensure all Lake Ainsworth Camp notes have been returned to school. Note payments are not to be made until September 11.

Parents of children in Years 3 and 5 will soon receive their children’s reports from the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) which children sat in May. As of next year NAPLAN is moving online. This means moving NAPLAN from the current paper-based tests to computer-based assessments.

NAPLAN Online will provide better assessment, more precise results and faster turnaround of information. The assessments can run through a real-time internet connection or onscreen without an internet connection.

NAPLAN Online features ‘tailored testing’ which gives students questions that are more suited to their ability – resulting in better assessment and more precise results. Watch ACARA’s video about how tailored testing will feature in NAPLAN Online:

Significant planning, development, research and trialling has been carried out to make sure we are all ready to move NAPLAN online.

The online national assessment platform is being built by Education Services Australia with funds from the Australian Government. The platform has been used to trial online assessment in 2016 and to deliver the National Assessment Program (NAP): civics and citizenship in 2016.

State/territory education authorities make decisions about the logistics and timing to move NAPLAN online for their state/territory. These groups also lead implementation of NAPLAN Online in their state/territory.

Festival of the Imagination News Hello everyone - hopefully you have seen the form for early bird ride tickets that have been sent home. If not, grab one from the office and get your money in by the 21st of August for a $25 all day riding pass for your kids. We would love more donations of clothes and books for the second hand stall, including white items for tie dyeing. Donations of cakes will also be required on the day for the cake stall. This is a great way to help raise money for our school even if you can’t be there on the day. If you are thinking of volunteering but haven't gotten around to letting us know - please don't be shy - there are only 10 days to go and LOTS of jobs looking for doers. Email [email protected] or text Tom 0406 380 893 or Michelle 0418 154 179 to put your hand up. Facebook Users: An event page for the festival is active. Lots of updates about the event there. 1. Go to: facebook.com/oceanshorespublicschool, 2. Click on the event post, 3. Mark yourself as 'going' and 4. Invite friends. Thanks for all the support.
