1 ...everyone. I sin- cerely wish you the best of all things in 2015. W ell, well, well, another year has disappeared. I do hope it was a good one for you. I know that in our gen- eration we need all the good things we can find ~ because, as they say, getting older is not for sissies! We look forward to longer days and new things to do … and keeping healthy. And, where does all the choco- late come from during the Christmas season? Seems to be everywhere - an- other good reason to Save the Earth - it’s the only planet with chocolate! My January resolution is to taper off (probably gradually, though). Good luck with your New Year’s Resolutions! December certainly kept us hopping. The dinner at Deez on the 14th was well attended (and delicious!) Gwen & George Despins and Dee Mathison entertained with some lively Christmas songs. Thanks to everyone who donated items for the gift draw. Many of us went home with more than we came with. Then, on the 19th, the Centre was over- flowing with folks who came to the After- noon Tea. Our capacity according to the Fire department is 128 people. I’m sure there were that many that day, enjoying the wonderful music & singing by the Songbirds and the QBUB Ukulele band. Thank you so much to our entertainers & the volunteers who helped set up, clean up, and take down. Also, to those who baked the treats…greatly appreciated. The Treasure Hunt prize of a $100 in gift cards donated by John and Ken of QF was won by Pat Critchell (our favourite drum- mer). Raffle prizes went to Gloria Paul, Irene Finholm and Joan Walsh. ...everyone. I sin-cerely wish you the best of all things in 2015.

W ell, well, well, another year has disappeared. I do hope it was a good one for you. I know that in our gen-eration we need all the good things we can find ~ because, as they say, getting older is not for sissies!

We look forward to longer days and new things to do … and keeping healthy. And, where does all the choco-late come from during the Christmas season? Seems to be everywhere - an-other good reason to Save the Earth - it’s the only planet with chocolate! My January resolution is to taper off (probably gradually, though). December certainly kept us hopping. The dinner at Deez on the 14th was well

I am sure there is a Town Safety Committee meeting about the middle of January. If you have seen any ar-eas in town that could be a safety issue, please call Roy Jones at 250 594-9947 so he can bring those is-sues forward at the meeting. Scottish Night is coming as we enjoy the birthday of Robbie Burns on the 24th. Johanna, our enthusiastic or-ganizer and Joan and Ron, our fabu-lous cooks will be raring to go to make sure we all have a great time. My thought to begin the new year: Good company brightens the day, no matter how dreary the weather. AND—if you need company, you know where to find the best!

OCEANSIDE BETTER AT H ME

If you are having problems and need a hand: grocery shopping ? cleaning your house ? have transportation issues ? need minor repairs or yard maintenance ? ...you have options to be able to stay in your home. You can even get a friendly visit from a volunteer. Jane Williams from the SOS gave us a presentation to let us know these services are available in our community. We want to thank her for letting us know about them so that we can let you know about them as well! Please feel free to contact her at 250 248-2093 and ask for her help if you need it. It is available!

This is a nice one from Suzanne Adkins,

(in Best of Bridge) ~ EATMORE BARS

3/4 cup of honey 1 cup peanut butter 10 regular size marshmallows

1 cup chocolate chips 1 cup peanuts 3 cups Rice Krispies

In a large pot bring honey and peanut butter to a boil over medium heat. Stir constantly. ADD marshmallows and chocolate chips, stirring until melted. Remove from heat and stir in peanuts and Rice Krispies. Press into a 9” x 13” pan.

Sounds delicious, from Maureen:

OVERNIGHT CINNAMON BUNS

Using a greased bundt pan, place some frozen buns around the pan. Sprinkle pudding mix over tops. Melt butter and blend well with the brown sugar. Pour over buns. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Cover with plastic wrap and leave on counter over night. They will rise to the top of the pan. Bake at 350 deg. for 20 minutes. An angel food pan works also. I have served this twice at two brunches here and I should have had at least two pans, as it is so good and easy when you’re busy.

Heat your oven to 350 degrees. Place small pretzels on parchment paper on a baking sheet. Place a Rolo candy on each pretzel. Put into the oven for about 5 minutes, but don’t let the Rolo melt too much! Remove from the oven and put a 1/2 pecan on top or another small pretzel. Enjoy!

TWO HOUR BUNS

3 cups water 8 TBSP sugar 6 TBSP oil 1 tsp. salt

2 TBSP fast rising yeast 2 eggs 7 to 8 cups or enough flour to make a workable dough.

Always

Needed !

TRY THESE — A PRETZEL TREAT!

3-3/4 TBSP Butterscotch pudding (mix) Cinnamon

12 frozen bun dough 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup butter

Mix yeast & 4 cups of the flour. In a separate bowl beat eggs, sugar, oil and water. Add flour and yeast mix. Blend well. Add remaining flour and salt. Mix well and let stand for 15 min-utes. Mix easily. Do not knead, let rise for 15 minutes. Punch down and form into buns onto a greased pan. You need to use some flour as the dough is sticky! Cover and let rise for one hour. Bake at 350 deg. for 15 min. Makes 4-5 dozen. You could do one pan of buns and one of cinnamon rolls!

On the 19th, it was a full house at the Centre where everyone enjoyed the songs by the Songbirds and the QBUB. There was a raffle with some beautiful prizes to be won, lovely treats to go with the tea and coffee, and as always, nice company to visit with. What a nice way to get a head start on Christmas celebrations. Huge thanks to the board members who were on hand to look after everyone.

On Dec. 14th, approximately 60 hungry folks enjoyed delicious roast beef and all the trimmings at Deez Restaurant. Everyone joined in a sing-along led by

Gwen and George Despins, on his violin & Dee Mathison

strumming her ukulele ...some of us also won a nice gift!!

Bill Adkins, chief cook checks one the many turkeys roasting for the dinner ... “lookin’ gooood”!!

Ursula Hitchcock and Marion Jagger had “visions of Brussels sprouts dancing in their heads” that night, I am sure! Celery sticks were

cut to perfection, thanks to David Douglas and his trusty knife!

Laurene Ebbett ...with one of the lovely table centres she created to ‘pretty up’ the tables...and has been doing so for many years. Thank you Laurene!

...as so many friends return each year. This Christmas we served 66 dinners to many

familiar faces as well as new guests who fit right in to our comfortable format. Preparations began two days before the big day, and we were once again blessed with help from many sources. People who spent a lot of time preparing vegetables, setting the beautiful tables and serving the dinner included Sheila Moore, Marg Finck, Joan & Ron Walsh, Wayne Buholzer, David Douglas, Joan Bryan, Merydie Joyce,

Monika Melnyk, Linda Kinny, Janice & Blake Whaley, Susan Porter and Frances McDon-ald. The food was delicious and the hot plates and boiling gravy kept it all perfect as it reached each plate. The desserts were traditional with sherry trifle, mince tarts and great plum pud-dings (many thanks to Lila Greene) with both custard and rum sauces. The merry songs and carols came to life with musical skill of George & Gwen Despins assisted by Christian War-render and Pat Kaspryk. Our ‘12 Days of Christmas’ gets better each year as each table gives their all to the performance of their special verse. A big hand to table 1 who outdid them-selves with energy and enthusiasm! Turkey and the trimmings went home with those who wanted them, and lots of love and best wishes were exchanged at the door. Everyone who arrived on the 26th to clean up for the new paint job came with willing hands and helpful hearts. A SPECIAL THANKS Stan, Lidia and Walter who are always on deck with lots of help. Until next year, Best Wishes for 2015 from Bill and Suzanne.

It’s become a

Family Christmas!!

T he only trips I can tell you about are the CASINO TRIPS:

SILVER REEF, February 9-11, and 3-day trips to TULALIP, Feb. 2 , 3 and 4th; April 7, 8 and 9th; also a 4-day March 2 - 5th.

SHOPPING IN VICTORIA

We also have the lovely PALM COURT ORCHESTRA in Duncan, Sun-day, Feb. 15th presenting “Valentine Diva”. Please place your money in the box . It’s $67 for bus, show and taxes. We are looking forward to the new brochure, hopefully, very soon.

T here were a lot of disap-pointed people when the Christmas Chemainus bus trip to the Yellowpoint Christ-mas Spectacular was can-celled. How could Sheila do this to all of us who look forward to this venue!! How could she change our beautiful and exciting trip to where marvellous decorations, warm apple cider, tarts … (that were all part of the ambience) made it a warm and fuzzy place...we didn’t care that it was performed in an old building! Well, we took the bad news, as only us who never would complain about anything Sheila arranges, boarded our respective bus. Even the weather wouldn’t improve our mood—no snow...just rain, and more rain. We had paid our money for this short trip, so off we went to the Port Theatre in Nanaimo...and WELL!!! What a surprise! The theatre was decorated just like Yellow-point has been all these Christmases!

The stage was set up with the Cedar Band in place, just like Cedar, with just a few changes. The show was spectacular with lots of the same cast of dancers, sing-ers with a few changes in format with a new baritone and tenor, both so polished and so completely at home on

Just some of the things to look for-ward to. I hope you all enjoyed a great Christmas, and are planning on coming Out ’n About with us in 2015

Happy New Year

vast number of interesting shops along the way. When it was time for a break, we crossed the street from the Bay to Murchies Tea & Coffee shop for a cup of coffee & a delicious homemade muffin. Then, it was back to shopping for awhile before getting back on the bus heading for home. We had a wonderful day and we’re looking forward to the next shopping day in Victoria. Editors note: even though this report missed December’s deadline, as someone took the time to write down this “shopping trip fun event” ...here it is ...a good read and a chance for all of us to consider taking this trip at least once for the fun experience … and of course, SPEND MONEY!! What could be more fun??

W hat better way to spend a day than shopping in Victoria? It was a great opportunity to browse and get a head start on the Christmas shopping. Over 50 of us arrived at Hill-side Mall, just in time for lunch at the Food Court in the mall.

With a large variety of stores including Sears, Marshals, Target, Bolen Books and many, many smaller ones, we started our shopping day with the group hurrying away in different directions. Later on, it was off to the Bay, downtown. From there it was a short walk to Chinatown, Capital Iron, Value Village with a

stage, adding a new vitality as did the dancers and chorus. From the time the show opened until it ended, it was non-stop singing, dancing, skits, small funny vignettes,

jokes and costume changes interspersed with quiet ren-derings of carols. The tenor performed 10 minutes of Elton John favourites, dressed way over the top...he was Elton with his great voice, fun antics, moves and yes, great big glasses, he played like Elton himself!! There was just enough Christmas music to keep all en-tertained. The producer is a genius … he took what is considered a very cold, stark theatre and along with the performers turned it into a happy place, bringing out the warmth of the performers, singing and dancing that had everyone moving … we also got to sing a few carols. Chemainus and Little Cedar are better than I’ve seen in the big cities...keep up the great work and we will keep coming again to be entertained...confirming this by three minutes of applause from the audience! All yours truly can say is that our small area of Che-mainus/Cedar and our small island, can sure entertain in a BIG, BIG WAY!

Thank you again Sheila! from Joy Armstrong

ATIOAL SECURITY HUMOUR

When I was ready to check out and pay for my groceries the cashier said, “Strip down, facing me.” Making a mental note so I could complain to my local Member of Parliament about this security rubbish, I did just as she had instructed. After the shrieking and hys-terical remarks finally subsided, I found out that she was referring to how I should posi-tion my credit card. After I sorted myself out and got dressed, they told me to shop else-where in the future. They need to make their instructions a little clearer for seniors. Man, I hate this getting older stuff.

FLU SEASON May we ask that again this year, if you are not well … PLEASE take

care of your germs at home!! We do have members with compromised immune sys-tems. Keep the Centre a ‘SCENT FREE’ ZONE as there also those with allergies.

Do you have a motorized scooter?

The Scooter Community Outreach Program is offering an opportunity for you to have it checked over and fine tuned. Just drive up to the Centre on the third Tuesday of each month from 9:30 to11:30. Del, from Victoria, has offered this service FREE of charge. Starts January 20th.

Lisa Wimberger created Neurosculpting as a complete approach for consciously reshaping our brains for greater happiness, health, creativity and compas-sion. With Neurosculpting, she offers you in-depth training in this powerful process for using medita-tion, mindfulness, diet and unique daily practices to help you create positive, lasting changes in your

brain—and your life. ~ ~ ~ ~

A Newfoundland painter by the name of Skipper Drover, while not a brilliant scholar, was a gifted portrait artist. Over a number of years, his fame grew and soon people from all over the country were coming to him on Long Harbour for his paintings. One day, a very attractive young woman pulled up to his house in a stretch limo and asked Skipper if he would paint her in the nude. This was the first time anyone had made this request and it had Skipper a bit perturbed. The beautiful lady told him that money was no ob-ject. In fact, she was willing to pay him up to $5,000 cash. Not wanting to get into trouble with his wife, Skipper asked the lady to wait while he conferred with Rose, his missus. In a few minutes he returned. “T’would be me pleasure to paint yer portrait, missus. The wife says it’s ok. I’ll paint ya in da nude, but I have to leave me socks in place to wipe me brushes.”
