Welcome to OnCommand Insight reporting

OnCommand Insight reporting features can help you make decisions around chargeback, trendingand overall storage allocation at an enterprise level. The OnCommand Insight Reporting Connectionis a business intelligence tool that enables you to view predesigned or create custom reports.

The OnCommand Insight Reporting Connection provides reports based on data from DataWarehouse (DWH).

You can do the following with OnCommand Insight Reporting Connection reports:

• Run a report.• Customize the report format and delivery method.• Schedule reports to run.• Email reports.• Use colors to represent thresholds on data.• Access a collection of report results on a dashboard.• Add tabs to views to show a dashboard collection of report results.

Note: The OnCommand Insight data can be viewed in any standard browser. However, the reportgeneration engine requires the Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer (IE) browser. Reports cannotbe dependably generated when using other Web browsers.

Inventory and capacity pre-defined reportsOnCommand Insight provides pre-defined reports describing your inventory.

Additional OnCommand Insight licenses provide access to different types of report data. TheOnCommand Insight Assure license gives you access to the violation reports. The OnCommandInsight Plan license gives you access to planning reports.

The pre-defined inventory reports provide host and storage array information in the followingcategories:

• Available FC Paths• Available NFS Paths• Connected Ports• Device Inventory• Fabric Summary• Host HBAs• Host Summary• Host Usage• Internal Volumes

9

Page 10: Oci Reporting 6.2.3

• Mapped but not Masked Volumes• Qtree• Replicas• SAN Summary• Shares

The pre-defined planning reports provide capacity information related to the following categories:

• File System Utilization• Internal Volume Capacity• Port Capacity• Storage Capacity• Storage Efficiency• VM Capacity

The individual pre-defined reports within these categories are described in this guide.

Variations due to installed modulesData in the OnCommand Insight reports is based upon the OnCommand Insight licenses that youhave purchased. For example, if you do not have OnCommand Insight Plan installed, then you willnot receive any data in the capacity reports.

You might see differences between the available options and icons in your OnCommand Insightwindows compared to the illustrations in the documentation. These variations are due to differencesbetween the installed modules on your system and the one used to create the illustration.

For example, if you see fewer icons or fields on your system than in an illustration, yourOnCommand Insight system has fewer installed modules than the system used to create theillustration.

OnCommand Insight Plan dashboards and reports

The OnCommand Insight Reporting Connection is a business intelligence tool used to help makedecisions based on report data. The OnCommand Insight Plan license provides access to dashboardsand reports that display information about chargeback, capacity, trending, and overall storageallocation at a business level.

Senior managers, business unit managers and application managers have different requirements forcapacity report information.

Capacity reports for application managersApplication managers use the OnCommand Insight capacity reports to gather information about thehosts in the network.

These reports answer these application manager questions:

• For managed hosts, what is the usable capacity each host can access?• Are there any outstanding violations that are relevant to managed applications?• For each of the managed hosts, is information about its HBA, switch connectivity and speed

visible? This information improves communication with the SAN team.• What volumes are accessed by managed hosts, and what is their capacity? What is their

redundancy?

Capacity reports for storage managersStorage managers use the OnCommand Insight capacity reports to monitor and evaluate the storageenvironment.

Storage managers use the OnCommand Insight capacity reports to gather this information about thestorage environment:

• Status of available capacity and ports in the managed data centers. This information can be usedto make purchasing decisions.

• Prioritization of storage service violations according to application priority.• Inventory summary list, including: number of fabrics, number of hosts, number of arrays, number

of tapes, number of switch devices, number of available switch ports, number of connectedswitch ports and switch port utilization.

• Totals of current storage utilization for:

• Array capacity.• Configured volume capacity.

69

Page 70: Oci Reporting 6.2.3

• Volume allocated capacity.• Masked capacity.• Replication.• Uncarved raw capacity.

• Top 10 arrays and their allocation utilization.• Service status for:

• Number of paths.• Total Accessed Capacity.• Number of violations and the percentage of the entire capacity that is under violation.

Planning reporting dashboardsPlanning report dashboards are used to group reports to provide a broader view of a particularenvironment.

Report options

This report shows the following:

• For disk failure protection, the calculation of potential loss totals up the losses of multiple disksper type.

• For deduplication gain, the potential gain is the sum of the non-deduplicated volumes times theaverage deduplication compression ratio of the deduplicated volumes. At least one deduplicatedvolume must exist.

• For Thin Provisioning, the potential gain is the total of the (volume size minus volume reserved)plus the total of the (snapshot size minus snapshot reserved).

Interpretation

By viewing the potential efficiency gain if storage efficiency technologies are in use for the entirearray, the report can help you know, for example, what the capacity gain would be if thinprovisioning is operating across all arrays or what the capacity gain would be if deduplication isturned on for the entire array.

Using this report lets you evaluate the current storage capacity efficiency of your environment anddevelop awareness of efficiency technologies that can enhance value and save resources.

Different storage technologies can yield increases (gains) or decreases (losses) to capacity. Thefollowing table describes some of these technologies and indicates whether a given technologyrepresents a gain or a loss to capacity.

StorageTechnology

Gain orLoss

Explanation

Disk failureprotection

Loss Represents the amount of capacity that is used to protect disk groups byRAID level. Example: RAID-4 where a single disk that is using everdisk group for parity. Summing the size of the parity disk generatescapacity loss.

OnCommand Insight Plan dashboards and reports | 117

Page 118: Oci Reporting 6.2.3

StorageTechnology

Gain orLoss

Explanation

Deduplication Gain Represents data compression or saved capacity in a compression ratio.Example: In a 2:1 compression ratio, for every 1 GB compressedcapacity, there should be 2 GB of uncompressed capacity. This meansthat more space is needed to store the same data without deduplication.

Thinprovisioning

Gain Helps to eliminate over-provisioning by consuming capacity only fromthe capacity that is used by the volume.

Clones Gain The clone shares capacity with its source volume and consumes onlythe capacity that is not mutual to itself and the source volume.

Report columns

The report includes the following columns:

Raw Capacity Storage raw capacity in TB.

StorageTechnology

Storage efficiency technologies, such as thin provisioning, deduplication, andRAID.

Gain TB The total capacity gained in this storage by using the specified technology, for example, 100 MB of redundant blocks saved by implementingdeduplication.

Gain % The capacity percentage gained in this storage by using the specifiedtechnology, for example, 10% gain saved by implementing deduplication.

• Host Summary section: Displays per host the total orphaned capacity (allocated and rawallocated), maximum observed IOPS, and total IOPS. Only hosts with orphaned capacity arelisted.

• Orphaned Volume section: Displays every volume that is orphaned for the report period.• Volumes by IOPS section: Displays every volume that has a total IOPS less or greater than

(depending on operation) than the specified IOPS threshold.

The reports include these columns:

Storage Name of the storage array.

Model Device manufacturer's model.

Raw OrphanedCapacity

The physical capacity of a disk or array; for a volume, the physical storagespace consumed by a volume, including RAID and volume overhead. Anorphaned volume is a volume that has not been accessed for the given time.

AllocatedOrphanedCapacity

The storage space consumed by a volume excluding RAID and volumeoverhead.

OrphanedCapacity

Volume capacity that has been masked, but has not been accessed within agiven time period.

Raw Capacity The physical capacity of a disk or array; for a volume, the physical storagespace consumed by a volume, including RAID and volume overhead.

AllocatedCapacity

Capacity available for use, if known.

Max Total IOPS Maximum rate at which input and output operations occurred for the volumefor the specified time. I/O operations per second.

Total IOPS The sum of average read and write IOPS for the volume for the specifiedtime. For hosts, this is the sum of the average total IOPS for volumes accessedby the host.

Orphaned Capacity reportUse this report to determine the capacity or volumes that are not in use by one application during aspecific time range. The report is based on whether the volume has been accessed. An orphanedvolume is a volume that has not been accessed for the given time.
