President and owner Peter Buttarazzi explains “Versa Construction fullyintends to create new standards that are unprecedented within the constructionindustry.” And, with an impressive list of projects already under its belt, thecompany is well on its way to fulfilling that goal.

Located in the hamlet of Concord in the Town of Vaughan, VersaConstruction Limited provides a full range of construction services to itsclients, including design build, construction management and general contract-ing. “We are committed tobest management prac-tices,” Ferdinand says. “Weinvest a lot in IT andresearch.”

Staff training, educationand experience are also atthe top of the priority list.

All of the company’sproject manager ’s haveengineering or relateddegrees. Ferdinand himselfholds a master’s degree inEngineering ProjectManagement while Peteradds more than 20 years ofexperience in the construc-tion industry.

“It is very much a pro-fessional environment,”Ferdinand explains.

Versa’s use of the state-of-the-art Edgebuilder pro-ject management softwareis a typical example of theeffort the company putsinto IT and managementplanning.

“The process beginswith the client’s vision, then the conceptual design

is created keeping cost andtime constraints in mind,”Ferdinand explains. “Adetailed design then fol-lows, anticipating ease ofconstructability and identi-fying methodologies thatwill not compromise thethree conventional objec-tives: time, budget andquality.” Upon project’send, an in-depth projectevaluation is conducted to

ensure continuous improve-ment and development.

It is precisely thisplanned, methodical, inte-grated approach that savesthe client money. Suchthoroughness avoids designor construction changes inmid-stream.

But not everyone in theconstruction industry pro-vides this kind of compre-hensive service, Ferdinand

points out. As a result thereis a credibility problemwithin the industry.

Versa makes no attemptto dodge the bullet ofaccountability, whichFerdinand says the con-

struction industry needs toface.

“There is still a percep-tion out there that the clientgets ripped off when spend-ing money for construc-tion.” There are a lot of

good contractors out there, but there are many whosepractices do not engenderpublic confidence, he says.

“Versa is dealing head-on with that perception byestablishing an open, hon-est, flexible relationshipwith the client,” Peteraffirms. “When we use theword ‘trust,’ we mean it.”

To underscore its com-mitment to customer ser-vice, Versa has added to itslong-term goals acquiringthe coveted ISO designa-tion, which recognizes out-standing management prac-tices – an uncommon featfor construction companies.

To achieve its goalsVersa plans to invest heavi-ly in staff training and IT tocreate an efficient cross-functional organization thatcan respond to virtually anyclient need.

“We want to remodel theway a construction compa-ny operates. This is our

dream and we welcomecooperation from our com-petitors who share thisvision,” offers Peter.

In three short years,Versa has tackled severalhigh-profile projects, leav-

ing little doubt the compa-ny has successfully bridgedthe often perilous spanbetween theory and prac-tice. One case in point isthe Matalco plant inBrampton. This $20 millionproject was “highly com-plex,” Peter explains. “Theheavy industrial plant hadbeen built to accommodatevery sensitive, specializedequipment - the mostadvanced technology of thealuminum industry in NorthAmerica.”

Versa Constructionpulled the entire projecttogether, including themechanical, electrical andgas components. If thescale and complexity of the120,000-square-foot build-ing wasn’t enough, therewas “an extremely tightdeadline to meet.” But in10 months, Versa had donethe job – on time, on budgetand on target.

Versa has also estab-lished itself as an expert ingolf course construction. The Club at Bond Head –considered one of the top10 courses in Canada –stands as a testimonial tothe company’s specialized
