Product Outline2.

Two modules exist:

The OCR310-MC7 is a dual optical character recognition (OCR) reader, designed to read the Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) on documents such as passports and ID cards.

The OCR310-MC7m offers the functionality of the OCR310-MC7, together with magnetic stripe card reader (MSR) capability to read data from cards with magnetic stripe such as credit and loyalty cards.

The modules are compatible, with Motorola™ MC70, MC75 and MC75A mobile computers.

Simply by attaching to the heel of the Motorola device, the module is fully functional.

Careful power management within the adapter minimises the modules power consumption and maximises time between return-to-base charging.

The OCR reading functionality captures code lines reliably from machine readable documents including passports (MRP), visas (MRV) and OCRB encoded cards such as the US Resident Alien card and European national ID cards all conforming to ICAO 9303 standards.

LEDs and an audible sounder provide a clear indication of a good or bad read.

The MSR allows the module to read a number of magnetic media including loyalty and credit cards conforming to ISO7811/2-5.

Compatibility3.

The module is compatible for use with the Motorola© MC70, MC75 and MC75A series hand-held computers and has been validated under the Motorola Validated Plus Program which provides assurance of compatibility and interoperability with compatible Motorola devices.

The module uses only the standard serial interface at standard speeds and formats. All operating systems compatible with the standard serial interface are compatible. USB lines are passed through the module so any peripherals that use these will be unaffected. Standard operating system calls are used to control and communicate with the module.

Other peripherals that use RS-232 may be affected depending on how the handshaking lines are used, but most peripherals are unaffected.

Indicators4.2.

Both the green and red light illuminate together momentarily to signify that the module is successfully communicating with the MC-7x Motorola device. This occurs when the module is connected to the hand-held device while the application is

running, or when the application is launched when the module is already connected.

The green light illuminates to indicate that a document has been read successfully. This is accompanied by a single audible sound (‘beep’).

The red lights illuminates to indicate that a document has passed through the document guide but has not been read successfully. This is accompanied by three audible sounds (‘beeps’).

Basic operation5.

The module communicates solely by RS-232 and uses the RXD, TXD, RTS and CTS lines the DTR, DSR and trigger/DCD are passed through to the bottom connector.

In normal operation only the RXD and CTS lines need to be considered. The standard output format is 9600 baud, 8 bits, no parity and one stop bit.

The CTS line is used to control the power mode of the module. When CTS is de-asserted the module will switch into a “sleep” mode where the power consumption is reduced by up to 50% and OCR/MSR input is ignored. It is advisable to put the module into sleep mode when not expecting input from the device to prolong battery life. If the reader is not going to be used for a while the serial port can be closed so removing power from the module entirely. The reader takes approximately one second to power up so if this delay can be accommodated it may be worth removing power from the module entirely between reads.

5.2. Charging

The module replicates the Motorola device connectivity on its base via the I/O connector which allows the device to be charged in the usual way with the module attached. This includes the option to charge via the standard Motorola device cradle.

When connected for charging, the LED charge indicator on the Motorola device will

illuminate in the usual way.

Document reading6.

6.1. How to read a document with OCR data

Orient the document correctly with the OCR-type text facing you. Align the document at one end of document guide (read with a swipe action from right to left for optimum performance) and swipe the document through the guide at a steady speed, ensuring that the swipe action continues until the document has completely travelled through the guide. The module can accept a wide range of swipe speeds.

Asuccessfulreadisconfirmedwith the good-read indicator illuminating green and an audible beep. An unsuccessful readisconfirmedwiththebad-readindicatorilluminatingred and three audible beeps. If a read is unsuccessful then re-swipe;forpersistenterrorsrefertotheTroubleshooting section.

6.2. How to read a document with MSR data

Available on model OCR310-MC7m only. Orient the document correctly with the magnetic swipe facing away from you. Align the document at either end of document guide and swipe the document through the guide at a steady speed, ensuring that the swipe action continues until the document has completely travelled through the guide. The module can accept a wide range of swipe speeds.

Firmware update10.

Thefirmwareconsistsoftwoparts,theMSRcodeandthe OCR code. Both parts can be updated via the serial interface.

Commands are sent to the module as Escape (0x1B) codes followed by a command byte:

VERIFY_CODE10.2.8.

Returns dump of entire program memory. Length is dependent on program size but in this case is 32k bytes long. The dump can be aborted by sending any character to the bootloader.

Usual programming procedure10.3.

The usual programming routine is enter the bootloader using GOTO_LOADER in the MSR command set and after the ACK is returned at 9600 baud switch to 115200 baud.

Use IDENTIFY to identify the bootloader version to make sure it is correct. Load each page into memory one page at a time, with a maximum page number of 0x7F.

from zero to 0x7FFD. Then Use SET_CRC which copies the previously calculated CRC into memory locations 0x7FFE and 0x7FFF.

OCR firmware bootloader10.3.2.

The OCR Firmware bootloader uses a standard XModem protocoltoreceivefirmware.Theunitentersuploadmodeas soon as the bootloader is entered. The serial protocol is 115,200 baud, 8 bits, no parity one stop. Both Standard XModem and XModem-1K are supported.

Running the test utility12.

Installation12.1.

The test utility can be downloaded from: http://downloads.access-is.com/Demo/Access_MCxx_Mobile5_ARM_1.0.0.6.zip

The simplest way to transfer the test utility program to the Motorola device is to use ActiveSync as follows:

Connect the Motorola device to the PC using the base •stationandUSBconnection;

Open ActiveSync (available from Microsoft) and the •modulefilestructurewillappearasanexternaldrive;

CopythefiletoaknownlocationwithintheMotorola•device;

Remove the Motorola device from the cradle and open the •application, it will appear as below.

Using the utility12.2.

The initial screen will appear as below:

Change the COM port if required, the default setting will be COM1 for the Motorola device.

Press ‘Connect’ to connect the module. If the connection is made this will be shown by the Connect button changing to

‘Disconnect’ and the message Swipe a test card appearing in the data box.

Swipe an OCR or MSR document. This will populate the data section with the OCR or MSR read from the card.

Alphanumeric characters will be displayed as normal, and control characters will be displayed as their 2 digit hex value inchevrons-<xx>.

Closing the utility12.3.

Pressing the ‘Disconnect’ button will disconnect the device, however this will not clear the screen. Reconnecting the application will return the Motorola device to the screen below.

To close the application completely press the ‘OK’ button in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

Service and cleaning13.

The unit is designed to not require routine preventative maintenance.

The OCR reading window and the MSR reading head (on the OCR310-MC7m only) in the document guide are designed to be self-cleaning. The reading surfaces are hard and slightly raised to enable a natural wiping action as each document passes through the slot.

Occasionally, typically as a result of the use of fouled documents, the reading window in the document guide may be obscured by dirt or debris. The symptom is unexpected triggering of a bad read alarm (indicated by three audible beeps and the illumination of the bad-read indicator) or having no response to a swiped document.

In these circumstances the document guide may be cleaned with the approved cleaning card, Access part

CARDCLEAN05. The card is supplied sealed in a foil wrapper and is impregnated with a safe and volatile cleaning agent(asafetyleafletisavailableuponrequest).

To use the cleaning card:

Remove the card from the foil wrapper and use the card •within20minutesofopening;

Place the card in the document guide and swipe it back •andforthuptotentimes;varyingtheangleandpressureof the card in the guide while swiping will maximise the contactareaandproduceabettercleaningperformance;

Flip the card to make use of the unused edge and repeat •thecleaningaction;

Retest the unit to see if the problem is solved.•

Warranty statement15.

(a) Access Limited (ACCESS) hardware Products are warranted against defects in workmanship and materials for a period of twelve (12) months from the date of shipment by ACCESS or an authorised resellertoitscustomer,butinnoeventmorethanfifteen(15)monthsfrom shipment of the Products by ACCESS, unless otherwise provided byACCESSinwriting,providedtheProductremainsunmodifiedandis operated under normal and proper conditions. (b) Spare parts (i.e. Parts, components, or subassemblies sold by ACCESS for use in the service and maintenance of Products) are warranted against defects in workmanship and materials for a period of thirty (30) days from the date of shipment. Spare parts may be new or originate from returned unitsundertheconditionssetforthinsubsection(d)below;(c)Forrepairs on ACCESS-branded hardware Products under this Agreement, including repairs covered by warranty, the repair services provided are warranted against defects in workmanship and materials on the repaired component of the Product for a period of thirty (30) days from the shipment date of the repaired Product, or until the end of the originalwarrantyperiod,whicheverislonger;and(d)Productsmaybeserviced or manufactured with parts, components, or subassemblies that originate from returned products and that have been tested as meeting applicablespecificationsforequivalentnewmaterialandProducts.The sole obligation of ACCESS for defective hardware Products is limited to repair or replacement (at ACCESS’s option) on a “return to service depot” basis with prior ACCESS authorisation. The customer is responsible for shipment to ACCESS and assumes all costs and risks associatedwiththistransportation;returnshipmenttothecustomerwillbe at ACCESS’s expense. The customer shall be responsible for return shipment charges for product returned where ACCESS determines there is no defect (“No Defect Found”), or for Product returned that ACCESS determines is not eligible for warranty repair. No charge will be made to the customer for replacement parts for warranty repairs. ACCESS is not responsible for any damage to or loss of any software programs, data or removable data storage media, or the restoration or reinstallation of any software programs or data other than the software, if any, installed byACCESSduringthemanufactureoftheProduct;(e)Exceptforthewarranty applying solely to the repaired component arising from a repair service as provided in (c) above, the aforementioned provisions do not extend the original warranty period of any Product that had either beenrepairedorreplacedbyACCESS;(f)Theabovewarrantyshallnot apply to any Product (I) which has been repaired, tampered with, alteredormodified,exceptbyACCESS’sauthorizedservicepersonnel;or (II) in which the defects or damage to the Product result from normal wear and tear, misuse, negligence, improper storage, water or other liquids, battery leakage, use of parts or accessories not approved or supplied by ACCESS, or failure to perform operator handling and scheduledmaintenanceinstructionssuppliedbyACCESS;(III)whichhas been subjected to unusual physical or electrical stress, abuse, or accident,orforcesorexposurebeyondnormalusewithinthespecified

operational and environmental parameters set forth in the applicable Productspecification;norshalltheabovewarrantyprovisionsapplyto any expendable or consumable items, such as batteries, supplied with Product. EXCEPT FOR THE WARRANTY OF TITLE AND THE EXPRESS WARRANTIES STATED ABOVE, ACCESS DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES ON PRODUCTS FURNISHED HEREUNDER INCLUDING ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR USE. ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES THAT MAY BE IMPOSED BY LAW ARE LIMITED IN DURATION TO THE LIMITED WARRANTY PERIOD. SOME STATES OR COUNTRIES DO NOT ALLOW A LIMITATION ON HOW LONG AN IMPLIED WARRANTY LASTS OR THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES FOR CONSUMER PRODUCTS. IN SUCH STATES OR COUNTRIES, FOR SUCH PRODUCTS, SOME EXCLUSIONS OR LIMITATIONS OF THIS LIMITED WARRANTY MAY NOT APPLY. The stated express warranties are in lieu of all obligations or liabilities on the part of ACCESS for damages, including but not limited to, special, indirect or consequential damages arising out of or in connection with the use or performance of the Product or service. ACCESS’s liability for damages to Solution Provider or others resulting from the use of any Product or service furnished here under shall in no way exceed the purchase price of said Product or the fair market value of said service, except in instances of injury to persons or property. To the fullest extent allowed by law, the warranties and remedies set forth in this agreement are exclusive and in lieu of all other warranties terms or conditions, express or implied, either in fact or by operation of law, statutory or otherwise, including without limitation warranties terms or conditions of/as to satisfactory quality,merchantability,fitnessforaparticularpurpose,conformanceto contract, correspondence with description and non-infringement, all of which are expressly excluded. ACCESS’s warranties herein are granted only to ACCESS’s customers or ACCESS’s authorised Distributors, and are not extended to any third parties that, for the avoidance of doubt, include any resellers, agents or dealers. ACCESS neither assumes nor authorises any other person to assume for it any other liability in connection with the sale, installation, maintenance or use of its products, and ACCESS provides no warranty whatsoever for any non-standard Products supplied by it hereunder. ACCESS SHALL NOT BE LIABLE UNDER THIS WARRANTY IF ITS TESTING AND EXAMINATION DISCLOSURE THAT THE ALLEGED DEFECT IN THE PRODUCT DOES NOT EXIST OR WAS CAUSED BE DISTRIBUTOR’S, OR DISTRIBUTOR’S RESELLER, CUSTOMER’S OR END USER’S, OR ANY THIRD PERSON’S MISUSE, NEGLIGENCE, IMPROPER INSTALLATION OR TESTING, UNAUTHORISED ATTEMPTS TO REPAIR, OR ANY OTHER CAUSE BEYOND THE INSTALLATION OR TESTING, UNAUTHORISED ATTEMPTS TO REPAIR, OR ANY OTHER CAUSE BEYOND THE RANGE OF THE INTENDED USE, OR BY ACCIDENT, FIRE, LIGHTNING OR OTHER HAZARD.
