Twenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

My brothers and sisters

There is a great song by the late Rich Mullins called “Screen Door”. The refrain claims that faith without works is like a screen door on a submarine…in other words, not very useful. There are some that would argue this point, but consider today’s gospel reading.

Jesus finds his disciples arguing over who is the greatest, and who will get to sit at Jesus’ right hand. Now, it’s true that they have been faithful followers of Jesus, but does that make them somehow better than anyone else? Jesus Himself says that the answer to that is a resounding “no”. He says quite clearly that whoever wishes to be the greatest shall be the servant of all.

Our fifth graders have an interesting take on this, which they prepared for the 9am Children’s Liturgy. In it, they demonstrate that being friends with Jesus means more than just being a follower. We need to live as He did…and give ourselves up to caring for others. Simple acts of service, from working at a soup kitchen to helping an elderly person carry in their groceries are the kinds of things that pro-mote the dignity of every person, which is what we, as Catholics, are called to do.

So while spending quality time with Jesus in prayer is essential to our relationship with Him, we can’t forget the other half of the equation. Having faith isn’t enough. We have to live it!

In Him,

Kristie Manning

“Dear young friends, in a culture of relativism and the ephem-eral, where many preach the importance of ‘enjoying’ the moment, I ask you, instead, to swim against the tide; yes, I am asking you to rise against this culture that sees everything as temporary and that ultimately believes you are incapable of responsibility, that believes you are incapable of true love.” - Pope Francis, Message for the 30th World Youth Day.

The RISE! 2015 Conference is a free two-day event for Bay Area teens, young adults as well as parents, catechists and teachers, that will take place on the 13th/14th of November, 2015. It consists of a series of talks by keynote speakers (Matt Fradd and Jackie Francois), participation in the Holy Mass, op-portunity for Confession, fellowship, and fun!

Following the invitation of our Holy Father, the purpose of RISE! 2015 is to instruct and encourage the youth to rediscover the beauty of the human vocation to love, providing them the arguments they need to rise “against the widespread tendency to reduce love to something banal, reducing it to its sexual aspect alone, deprived of its essential characteristics of beauty, com-munion, fidelity and responsibility” and for the adults to be aware of the dangers that their children are exposed to and how to prevent and act about them. Register today at www.riseba.org

CFM

Our QofA Christian Family Movement (CFM) group invites all young parish families to talk with representatives after the Masses on October 17th and 18th about joining us for the com-ing year. CFMers will be available at the exits for all Masses and the donut table after the 9:00 am Sunday Mass (You’ll no-tice them by their distinctive “CFM” buttons). Come see what nearly 200 other QofA families have enjoyed over the years.

PEACEMAKERS

Vincent McAloon, Third Order Franciscan

Vince McAloon was an ordinary single man from Rhode Island and a family friend. His life as we knew it was involved in helping others around the world. He worked as a teacher in Rome, Jamaica, Pennsyl-vania and Notre Dame, Ind. He later became a field secretary to the Third Order of Saint Francis and lived in Rome. Vincenzo, as he liked to be called, had a joyous, if not impish, attitude. On one of our visits to Rome, he picked us up very late at the airport and on the ride into the city, he went through several red lights . . . seeing our shock and concern, Vince delivered the following quote: “In Rome, traffic signals are mere suggestions.” While a student at Notre Dame, he took left-over food each day to the homeless and needy of South Bend. During World War II he was an assistant to his Army unit’s chaplain in Rome. When there was bread left over after a meal, he took it to the local orphanage, even though he was told he could get in trouble for this. In Jamaica, he taught children and acted in place of a priest if one was unavailable by offering communion services. He enjoyed being of service to others, working at the USO and later establishing a home away from home for Notre Dame stu-dents in Rome. After 30 years of service he was given the honor of being a member of the Order of Friars Minor, a rare privilege for a layman. The order was written in fancy language, but above it all, Vince was singled out for this honor because “he has a Franciscan heart.” Fr. Ted Hesburgh, President of Notre Dame, officiated at his funeral, recognizing Vince as a man who spent his entire life providing care and service to others.
