Fukuoka Jisho Mulling Disney FacilityFukuoka Jisho, the developer of Canal City 2, a shopping and entertainment complex planned in Fukuoka City, is considering the establishment of an affiliated unit to develop and manage the indoor Disney Co. facility that might be located at the site. They've also asked other major local companies to consider taking a financial stake in that new unit. Canal City 2 is considered the prime candidate as the location for Disney's first indoor facility. Nishitetsu to Open Hotel in KagoshimaThe Fukuoka City-based Nishi-Nihon Railroad Co. (Nishitetsu) revealed it planned to operate a hotel in Kagoshima City near the JR Kagoshima Chuo Station. The hotel will be located in a building to be constructed by a local trading company, and plans call for it to open in March 2012. Nishitetsu's objective is to capture the large demand they anticipate from business travelers and tourists after the Kyushu Shinkansen opens in 2011. Venison Hot DogsKwassui Women's College of Nagasaki City and the Deer Company, which processes meat from deer raised on their own ranch in Minamishimabara, have jointly developed hot dogs made from venison. They held a tasting party in a Nagasaki City hotel on the 28th to promote their planned sale next spring. Venison has fewer calories and fat than beef, and is rich in iron and vitamins. Kitakyushu Leads in Recycling EmploymentThe Kitakyushu branch of the Bank of Japan released a report on the recycling industry in that city showing that it employs 2,692 people. That number accounts for 0.64% of the national total of people employed in the industry, which is the highest percentage of 63 regions in the country, including Tokyo's 23 wards and 15 government-designated cities. In second place nationwide was Saitama Prefecture, with a percentage of 0.45%.

Daihatsu Plans Minicar Production BaseDaihatsu Motors launched sales of its new Move Conte model, with engines produced at its recently opened plant in Kurume and assembly conducted at its Oita plant #2. The company plans to produce 48,000 units a year, and intends to pursue a strategy of focusing its minicar production in Kyushu.

Governments to Preserve Niji-no-MatsubaraThe governments of the city of Karatsu, Saga Prefecture, and Japan (as represented by the Kyushu Bureau for National Forest Management) signed a memorandum pledging to work together to preserve the 216-hectare Niji-no-Matsubara pine forest stretching for 50 kilometers along the coast of Karatsu Bay. The forest is threatened by pine-eating insects and the growth of broad-leaf trees. A plan for its preservation was formulated in March, and this memorandum is an agreement to work together to implement the plan. Fukuoka Tour Bus StartsFukuoka City-based Nishi-Nippon Railroad (Nishitetsu) will begin operation of a tour bus route in the city starting on September 22. Called "Green", the bus will take tourists to famous locations in the city along a 16-kilometer course. It is part of the company's 100th anniversary commemoration. 8 Regional Public Works ConstructionThe Fukuoka branch of the West Japan Surety Co. released the results of public works construction trends in the Kyushu-Okinawa region for July, which showed there were 3,757 projects for the month. This is a 6.7% increase from the year-before period, and the first such rise in eight months. The value of the construction subcontracted was 140.7 billion yen, a 2.8% increase. 123 Kumamoto's Highest BuildingKumamoto Ci ty re leased detai ls of a redevelopment plan that cal ls for the construction of a 123-meter high building near the JR Kumamoto Station to coincide with the opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen line. It will be the tallest building in the prefecture. The station area is said to lack a landmark facility of the kind near the JR Hakata Station and the JR Kagoshima Central Station, and the building is expected to create a new look for the district.

Recycling Operation at IkeshimaFukuoka City-based Mitsui Matsushima formally announced it would begin a recycling operation next year at Ikeshima in Nagasaki City, the last Kyushu coal mine, which shut down in 2001. The recycling enterprise will include shredding disposed automobiles. The company is investing 2.9 billion yen in the enterprise.

Solar Generating Plant in OmutaKyushu Electric Power announced plans to build a large solar power generating plant in Omuta, Fukuoka Prefecture, with a maximum capacity of 3,000 kW. Construction work is to start next autumn, and the plant will go on line either at the end of 2010 or the beginning of 2011. It is expected to use up to 30,000 solar panels the size of tatami mats. Its projected annual power output would meet the needs of 900 ordinary households. DKyushu Assemblies Get D RatingA n a t i o n a l f e d e r a t i o n o f c i t i z e n ombudsmen re leased thei r " report card" on the transparency, vitality, and effectiveness of expenditures for 103 local governmental assemblies nationwide. The report included municipal as well as prefectural assemblies. Most Kyushu assemblies received a D grade. Among the prefectural assemblies, those of Yamaguchi and Kagoshima received a C, while the other six were given a D. Among the major cities, only Kitakyushu received a C, while the prefectural capitals and Shimonoseki were given a D.

10% Fukuoka City Office Occupancy RatesThe Fukuoka City branch of office leasing company Miki Shoji Co. released a report on office occupancy rate in the city as of the end of July. The rate fell by 0.13 percentage points from the previous month to 89.98%, marking the first time since July 2005 that it has been below the 90% level. According to the company, the primary reason for the decline is that of the 11 new office buildings completed and opened in the city from February to June, seven have a full utilization rate of less than 70%.

Exports to Asia BriskThe value of Kyushu agricultural, forestry, and fisheries products during business year 2007 soared 17% to 54.3 billion yen, topping the 50 billion yen-level for the first time. Kyushu's share of the national exports in this sector was 13%. Of particular note was the amount of exports going to Asian countries with high growth rates. South Korea imported the most products, followed by the United States, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

1-6 35% Sharp Reduction in New CondosA Fukuoka City based company monitoring conditions in the housing industry reports that the number of new condominiums coming on the market in the seven Kyushu prefectures from January to June totaled 4,178 units, a 35% decline from the year-before period. Condominium sales fell 12.4% in the same period to 5,001 units. The decline in new units was attributed to the higher costs of construction materials and the increasing difficulty in procuring funds for construction from financial institutions.

07 52 52 New Overseas OperationsThe Kyushu Economic Research Center released i ts report on the overseas business expansion of Kyushu/Yamaguchi Prefecture-based companies for 2007. The survey found that the companies launched a total of 52 new enterprises overseas during that period. Though the total is roughly flat from the previous year, it is also the second straight annual decline. Roughly half of these enterprises were located in China, and 80% were in Asia.

The intent is to reduce personnel costs and reinvest the savings into the facility itself to attract more customers. The group that owns Space World controls a total of 30 such facilities, and has maintained employment at all of them, but made an exception in this case to prevent the facility's closure.
