EDITORIAL School holidays are here again with Friday’s Grand Final
parade, the Grand Final the next day, and the Show in
between. So, if you are on grandkid duty, I guess it’s
time to take a deep breath, brush yourself down and go
with the flow*
There are many amazing things to be done and sights to
be seen with kids, (apart from the above, which cost,
cost, cost!) Most kids love public transport, because for
them it is such a novelty! Some are perfectly happy to
ride, change, perhaps at the bus stop, then change again
when you meet a train. By that time you are almost in
another country and all for the basic price of a daily
ticket. This is particularly good if you travel through an
area using giant cranes or digging up the footpath.
Things and places that we as adults take for granted are
often not visited by kids these days and all those statues
of ancient people dotted around the city streets and gar-
dens are conversation starters about our history, which
is a far more interesting than dry old history books.
A timely visit to the shed is also a necessity for all kids,
young or old, and we have found lately that even the Dis-
trict Nurses who come to dress “the leg injury ”, leave via
the back way having had a quick shed glimpse on the
way in.
So, don’t despair, and as I said initially, just go with the
flow, and enjoy their company (if you have them) while
they are young enough to enjoy yours.!
P.s. I just realized that by the time you receive this, holi-
days, Grand Finals, etc. will be a distant memory! Sorry,
but remember the information for next time!

must be taken at the very end of
a shift!!

Member of the Month is Michael Kelly I was born in the Chelsea Community Hospi-
tal on the 29th Dec. 1948, being from a family of
seven boys and one girl. I married Helen Elizabeth
Godwin of Donvale on 28th Dec. 1970. We have a
son Ben (41) who works on the nursery and Fiona our
daughter (46) who lives in Sydney with our four grandchildren, (and her children )Dylan 15,
Liam 12, Abby 9, and Jacinda 5.
I went to the Holy Redeemer Primary school in Mont Albert, then on to Whitefriars; College, from
there going to RMIT to do a course in watch making and my first job was a six year apprenticeship with W A
Schaffer Pen Co. moving on into the Spares div. and later as a
rep. Those of us who are old enough will remember one of
the major prizes on Bob Dyer’s “Pick a Box’ was a Bulliver
watch which we supplied for the show. I later moved over as a
rep. for Citizen watches being there for the next 12 years.
Shortly after we were married we packed up a cara-
van and toured the East coast of Australia stopping from time
to time, getting odd jobs in abattoirs, builders laboring etc
until finally settling in Qld. where we purchased a jewelry
shop.
We returned to Victoria in 1984, purchased rural
land in Silvan and established the business now known as
“Evergreen Nurseries” Having a love for plants and the way they work we turned a hobby into a business, now sup-
plying all the Victorian and South Australia Bunnings’ stores with Climbers.
I joined YVMPS in 2014 having an interest in old equipment from an early age. Whilst living in Mordialoc
a school mate and I would venture into a pad-
dock next door and play in war time surplus
vehicles and tanks etc which were stored there.
The only stationary engine I have is a Southern
Cross B, 10 HP sitting in the paddock under a
tarp where it was used to pump water from the
creek in a previous life. I prefer my collection of
Ransom, Mobil co etc. reel mowers as they are
much easer to move about. With my son Ben
we have several Dodge vans as works in pro-
gress
My Hobbies and interests have always been flowers and plants with the odd caravan trip thrown in. Apart
from Australia we have caravanned in England, USA, Europe and are planning to do another trip overseas shortly.
A real highlight of my life was giving up smoking, and being a Nursary man and also I guess being able to turn my
hand to most things..”Jack of all Trades.”, that’s me!

SUNDIAL Engine from Front Cover
A 10 year old boy we shall call “Adam” (a good name to
start with), has shown an early interest in motors and old
engines. He lives with his family in Eaglehawk just out of
Bendigo where his Dad is into playing with old tractors,
Bulldogs and stuff etc. One day Adam dragged home a
couple of old motor mowers he found on his way home
from school, with the view of seeing how they work,by
pulling them apart in his spare time and hoping to get one
going. Over a period of time he has successfully rebuilt
and restored one of the mowers (possibly with some help
from his Dad). which he now takes out and displays at
various shows in the area. A wonderful achievement for a
youngster..
One evening while watching TV the program
ventured into an old shearing shed where the camera
zoomed in on an old horizontal engine with the flywheels
spinning.”Gee I wouldn’t
mind getting one of those”
Adam said! “Well” (said his
Dad) “We will just have to
keep our eyes and ears open
and see what we can find”.
So some enquiries were made
and shortly there after Adam became the proud owner of
this beautifully restored SUNDIAL engine which he will
now proudly exhibit around the traps for possibly another
fifty years or so.
This engine was previously owned and restored by,
Club Member George Smith many years ago. ED.

It is a Peace Pole !!
The Peace Pole movement is part of an official
project of The World Peace Prayer Society, New York
associated with the United Nations. It’s sole mission is
to spread the universal message “May Peace Prevail
on Earth” to embrace all lands and people of this Earth.
The Peace Pole Project was started in Japan in 1955 by
Masahisa Got– a Japanese poet, writer and philosopher
who decided to dedicate his life to spreading the mes-
sage. He was greatly
affected by the
bombings on Hi-
roshima and Naga-
gaki in Word War II.
A Peace Pole is a
monument that dis-
plays the message:
“May Peace Prevail
on Earth” in various
languages of choice.
The colours of the
Peace Pole are black,
green, yellow, blue,
white and red—
colours included in
every nation’s flag.
This Peace Pole links
us with people all
over the world who
have planted Peace
Poles in the same
spirit .
This could be the
first Peace Pole to be
planted in the city of
Whitehorse ?
Keep an eye out as
you drive around and
you may be surprised
where you find them.

GUILTY or NOT GUILTY ?
At our August club meeting David Ball addressed
the members with the suggestion of paying “guilt
money” to the treasurer for non attendance at the
planned Sunday working bees. He felt guilty and
offered a $50 annual donation for his inability to
attend due to his other commitments.
Lewis Carlton, usually chief organizer of the work
to be done assured David that for what ever reason
members can’t attend ,they should not feel guilty,
but continue to contribute to the club’s activities as
best as they are able.
What do you think ? How do you feel ?
If you have any thoughts on this matter why not let
your committee know. Ed.

We had a good turn out of engines, and we had another great week-end although it was a bitterly cold one. We set up and caught up with
some of the others doing the same. Once again our club had a good show of engines. Stan Rundell had
his Buzacott Farm Pumper, his Tom Thumb and a table display of miniature steam models, next Jamie had his Wolseley Style 1, then Don had the 4HP Sundial. Don Wright had his 8 HP Cushman, Benn Wilkinson his Lister CS and his Amplian
generator while Malachia (one of our Junior members) had a couple of Villiers and his small steam engines along with some tins of spark plugs. Barry Thomas had his Lister J
and the Sunfeed Gristler. Further down the compound were Michael Fiddess and his Dad (Cliff) with a Cooper Little Wonder, also a Cooper TB, next was the Fairbanks Morse which
I think belonged to Peter Aumann and Lucas. Richard Kinniard had his International if I'm wrong in the last couple I apologize as I didn't quite make it down to that end of the
compound. Jo and Tom Dathan broke their holiday to spend the weekend with us, before setting off on Sunday afternoon to resume their holiday. On Friday
evening we had a lovely meal at the Wedderburn Hotel (12 of us) and we all helped Allison Wright celebrate her birthday with a cake. The meals were
enormous with poor Stan ordering a pizza, so huge he didn't know where to start, but of course he was assisted by others at the table. Once again
our table was one of the winning tables with the raffle; this year being Barry's turn to win. We were joined by Kitrina and Neil Harvey from Ararat
who love to join our happy group. Neil shows a 1 1/2 HP Neway and Kitrina shows the public how to use a hand operated sewing machine.
Thanks Barry for keeping the kettle hot, Jamie for supplying sausages and bread for lunch each day and us women for yummy cakes and slices. The usual big bonfire was lit on Friday afternoon , and burnt all weekend, being
very popular as people were standing near it to try to keep warm. Also a big Thank You to the committee for the great meal put on for us on Saturday evening. It was much appreci-
ated. After tea Don and Jamie set up the generator with colored lights threaded through
the gazebo and it looked great for the twilight show. Benn also had a couple of lights on as well as some other people. By Heather and Don Butcher.
