Executive Management Program on IR & HRM at Tokyo, Japan

In the September 2013, I was nominated for “Executive Management Program on IR & HRM” at Tokyo, Japan conducted by “The Overseas Human Resources and Industry Development Association” (HIDA) formerly Association for Overseas Technical Scholarship (AOTS). On Sep 22 I traveled through Emirates air lines heading to Tokyo, Japan. I was extremely happy and anxious to be there and it was a learning experience with full of enjoyment. By the time the plane landed in Narita the first thing I saw was the most fabulous sea, I felt like it was as clear as crystal. I marched into the terminal of the airport there was a huge sign that says ‘Welcome to Tokyo City Air Terminal’. The excitement filled me head to toes I just wanted to run outside and enjoy the fresh air.

On my way out of the terminal I was stunned by the organization and the sparkling of the place, at that time I could smell the freshness and the cleanliness of the places, people everywhere welcoming the arrivals with a bright insignificant smile on their faces.

The course on Executive Management Program on IR & HRM was mainly focuses on following key points:

• Enhance understanding of Japanese Industrial Relations & Human Resource Management practices with their basic philosophies for sustainable growth

• Redefine issues or identify new issues concerning current IR/ HRM in organizations by apply concepts and methodologies learned during the program

• Utilizes various concepts and idea related to corporate planning

• Learning from other participants about different perspectives, cultures and industries

On the same side the program has also been designed not only to improve competitive productivity of worker but also enable participants to take the initiative in promoting 5s and Kaizen activities within their organizations.

From Pakistan, I was accompanied with Mr. Muhammad Siddiq Rafee, Head of HR of Otsuka Pakistan Limited. Over

all we were 22 members from India, China, Bangladesh, Brazil, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Mongolia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.

During the program we had two days stay in Kyoto, the old capital of Japan and where we visited Omron Kyoto Taiyo Ltd. and saw the practical application of 5S & Kaizen by disable people. We also visited Gekkeikan Sake Co. Ltd. more than 350 years old company having oldest sake brewing techniques to produce fine quality of sake that is now not only sold throughout the Japan but also exported worldwide.

Basic Learning from the course and Japanese nation is:-

• Japanese Approach to Quality √ Productivity and Quality are not trade-offs √ Quality does not make cost more• Long term employment instead of life time employment• Joint Consultation communication between

management and workers • Management respects experiences and knowledge of

“A Man on the Spot”• Management emphasis on incentives systems

encouraging “KIAZEN Activities”• PDCA Cycle (Plan, Do, Check & Action) and Goal

Management System• Positive Attitude towards job is the key to success • Team work leads towards achievement of big goals• Listen to others and give respect to others opinion• Always think for continuous improvement as nothing is

perfect

In short the program was highly beneficial and given me the opportunity to meet the representatives of various countries related to diversified industries.

Undoubtedly, it was really a brainstorming session for those who really want be a significant tool for their organization and be in a position to learn management tools, concepts, techniques to be more competent, so that may be effective and enhance values and credibility for the organization. The learner can rise above being what has been perceived as just being “professional” but to the next higher level of being “progressive and competent”. A rapid change technology and working practices mean that job roles today are very different from those encountered five or ten years ago. Administrators need to learn, unlearn and relearn and be equipped with the relevant knowledge and skills in order to remain competent in the workplace.

We are important to our organization’s success, the facilitator especially emphasis on the Objectives i.e. to identify; Responsibilities of the Secretaries, Behavior and Perception, Changing Rolls as per Organizational Structure, Knowledge Requirement, Productive –vs- Busy, Paradigm Shift etc. etc. In order to communication barriers, it is imperative for Sender [Be clear about the message to be sent] and on the other hand for Receiver [Be attentive, Concentrate on the message & ask for clarifications].

The facilitator concluded the workshop by following wisdom:

“When you change your thinkingYou change your beliefs;

When you change your beliefsYou change your expectations;

When you change your expectationsYou change your attitude;

When you change your attitudeYou change your behavior;

When you change your behaviorYou change your performance;

When you change your performanceYou change your LIFE”
