THE ALBERT McNEIL JUBILEE SINGERS

The historical roots of today's JubileeSingers go back more than 100 years tothe Emancipation Proclamation inJanuary 1863, which ended slavery inthe United States. The year 1863 wascalled the "Jubilee Year" and a choralgroup called the Fisk University JubileeSingers began introducing audiences inthe United States and Europe to Negrospirituals long before the advent of thephonograph or radio. In 1870 they sangfor Queen Victoria at the Court of St.James in London.

The Albert McNeil Jubilee Singershave garnered international acclaimand focused world-wide attention on thevast body of music termed Afro-American. Featuring a repertoire drawnfrom the tribal music of the earliestslaves through their spirituals, to thepatois and calypso of the Caribbean andspirituals pertaining to their years ofenslavement, as well as the work songs, jazz and gospel of more recent times, the Jubilee Singers have become one ofAmerica's finest exponents of the richand vital body of music that is such anintegral part of the Black experience.

12

Ten years ago the Singers undertooktheir first European concert tour, andsince that time have evoked standingovations in the great concert halls ofnineteen nations. On their latest over-seas tour, they ventured beyond thetraditional European circuit to travel toNorth and West Africa, Egypt, Iran,Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Singershave represented the U.S.A. at theSagra Musicale Festival of Italy, atDubrovnik, Ohrid and LjubljanaFestivals of Yugoslavia, the FestivalMusical International of Hainaut,Belgium, the Ein-Gev Festival of Israel, and the Mundial del Folklore Festival ofGuadalajara where they won the firstGold Medal ever awarded. Their perfor-mances for U.S. servicemen abroadhave earned them the Department ofDefense's Certificate of Esteem and theGold Lion, the insignia of the Southerr-Command stationed in Italy. TheJubilee Singers have collaborated withthe Alvin Ailey Dance Company, theLos Angeles Philharmonic under ZubinMehta, and they were chosen bySamuel Goldwyn to record the sound

Spiritual Roots

Go Down, Moses

Go down, Moses, 'way down in Egypt'sland,

Tell ole pharaoh to let my people go.

When Israel was in Egypt's land,Oppressed so hard they could not standOh! Go down, Moses, 'way down in

Egypt's land.

Let my people go, free my people. Thus satth the Lord, bold Moses said,"If not I'll smite your first-born dead."We need not always and moan, go,And wear these slavery chains forlorn.

;v'ry Time I Feel the Spirit

Ev'ry time I feel the Spirit movin' in myheart I will pray.

On the mountain my Lord spoke, outHis mouth came fire and smoke.

In the valley on my knees, ask my Lordhave mercy please.

Jordan river chilly and cold, chills thebody, not the soul.

Great day, the righteous marchin'round me looks so shine,

ask my Lord if all was mine.

Deep River

Deep river, my home is over Jordan.Deep river, Lord. I want to cross over

into campground.

o don't you want to go to that gospelfeast, that promised land, where all ispeace?

When the Saints Go Marchin' In

Oh when the saints go marchin' on in,oh when the saints gomarchin' in,Oh Lord I want to be in that number,oh when the saints go marchin' in.

Oh when they march around the throneoh when they march around the throne,Oh Lord I want to be in that number,oh when they march around the throne.

The Spiritual vs. GospelDr. Geneva H. Southall

Spirituals are the orally-transmittedunaccompanied musical utterances ofAmerican slaves - their collectivesoulful outpouring which in words, nuances, and melody serve to docu-ment the weariness, loneliness, sorrows, pain and hope of a peopletrapped for more than 250 years inbondage. Spirituals were introduced tothe world by the Fisk Jubilee studentsingers in 1871 when they embarkedon a concert tour to raise money to savetheir debt-ridden school from closing. While raising an initial sum of$150,000 from their 1873 Europeantour under noble patronage, they alsosaved a priceless legacy of historicalAmericana. Despite more Europeaninfluences used by later college-trainedBlack composers in their concertizedchoral and solo arrangements, eachsought to capture the emotional spirit oftheir slave forebears.

While rooted in the African-style reli-gious slave shouts, camp meeting andWesleyan hymns, gospel is an expres-sion of the 20th century urban experi-ence. Utilizing a free-improvisatory,blues and jazz-like vocal and instru-mental sound and repetitive phrasing, these songs celebrate "Good news inhard times." Driving emotionalismcomes from an emphasis on sponta-neous audience off-beat hand-clapping,footpatting, verbal interjections andother bodily movements as the soloistrenders a sermon in song, one of thegifts of Black people to the worldcommunity.

Gid torna a rallegrar (Now Once More To All The Earth) Luca Marenzio(1553-1599)

Now once more to all the earth her brightness bringing,April the young and fair is crowned with flowers,The sea is quiet, the frost no longer stinging,The nymphs and shepherds rejoice in their bowers. The birds return now in am'rous combat singing,Their songs ofjoy in praise of Spring's sweet powers. And though Iweep at eve, beset by sorrow,Soon will the sun unveil the welcome morrow.

Dolcissima mia vita (My Sweetest Life) Carlo Gesualdo(c. 1560-1613)

My sweetest life, my dearest,Do not disdain me, but relieve my suffering,Do not conjecture that the lovely flame which destroys mewill die away because you avert your gaze, your countenance:Ah, me! my desire, my yearning, my ambition,Oh, to love you, or to perish.

Fenice Fu (I Was a Phoenix) Jacopo da Bologna(14th c.)

I was a phoenix and I lived a pure and gentle life; Now I have been transformed into a turtle dove.I fly with love through beautiful meadows.Neither trees without fruit nor turbid waterEver pleases me; therefore I am in doubtSummer departs and winter comes suddenly. Thus I lived, and thus I live, and I am able to write:Not a woman exists any more who honorably lives.

Oh when the sun refused to shine,'h when the sun refused to shine,h Lord I want to be in that number,

oh when the sun refused to shine.

Oh when they crown Him Lord of Lords,oh when they crown Him Lord of Lords,Oh Lord I want to be in that number,oh when they crown Him Lord of Lords.

Canti di prigionia (Songs of Captivity)(sung in Latin)

I. Preghiera di Maria Sturada (Prayer of Mary Stuart)"0 Lord God! I have trusted in thee. 0 my beloved Jesus! Release menow! In the heavy chain, in this wretched punishment, I long forThee. Fainting, groaning, and kneeling, I beg, I implore you torelease me! 0 Lord God"

II. Invocazione di Boezio (Invocation of Boethius)"Happy he who would gaze upon the sparkling font of good.Happy he who could break the bonds of the heavy earth."

III. Congedo di Girolamo Savonarola (Farewell of GirolamoSavonarola)

"The world presses upon me, my enemies rise up against me, yet Ifear nothing. For I have put my trust in Thee, Lord, since Thou artmy hope, since Thou hast established Thine everlasting refuge forme. In Thee, Lord, have I put my trust.

Luigi Dallapiccola(1904-1975)

Dallapiccola readily acknowledged that Canti di prigionia was the first ofseveral works which were inspired and shaped by events in his life and hisreactions to them. He traced the source of his lifelong concern withpersonal, intellectual, and political freedom to his earliest childhood memo-ries growing up during World War I..In explaining his choice of text for thefirst movement, Prayer of Mary Stuart, Dallapiccola commented "Onlythrough music could I express my indignation. I had just finished readingMary Stuart by Stefan Zweig. My intention was to transform the prayer ofthe queen as an individual into a song for all mankind; I wanted to dwell atlength upon the word "libera" in the music, to have this divine wordshouted by everyone." Dallapiccola took the text for the second movementfrom the Writings of Boethius, the Sixth-century philosopher/musician whohad been imprisoned and executed by Theodoric. Invocation of Boethiuswas to serve as "a bridge leading to an affirming finale." The text for thefinale, the Farewell of Girolamo Savonarola, was chosen in reaction to thereply of Great Britain's Sir Samuel Hoare to Hitler's announcement in 1940of the imminent aerial attacks on Great Britain, in which Sir Hoareexhorted the nation to pray. The score was finished in October 1941, andaccording to the composer, the premiere of the trilogy "took place on aparticularly ill-omened day: December 11, 1941 ... It was the day onwhich Mussolini declared war on the United States." Canti di priqionia, hailed as a masterpiece in London in 1946, was only the first ofDallapiccola's large-scale works dealing with freedom.

III.

Goffredo Petrassi(b. 1904)

Edward Lear (1812-1888), a celebrated English artist and author, isregarded as the first and one of the most brilliant representatives of Englishnonsense poetry. He wrote facetious verses accompanied by his absurddrawings to amuse the children. His famous "Book of Nonsense," publishedin 1846, is a collection of nonsensical verses called "limericks" which arepoems of five lines rhyming aa bb a, containing humorous words and oftenbeginning with the name of a place. In 1952 Goffredo Petrassi set to music five verses from the "Book ofNonsense" for the Choir of the Accademia Filarmonica Romana, which hehad directed during the years 1947 to 1950. Petrassi's settings of these

-iertcks are humorous and pleasant, with long glissandi imitating theke wriggling in the shoes, a few slow notes representing those weary of

lfe, harp imitations, and tumultuous glissandi and dissonances describingthe "Old Maid of Stroud, who was horribly jammed in a crowd."
