*Hymn #140 “Great is Thy Faithfulness”

Children’s Time

Prayer of Confession Patient Lord, we find it easy to blame our circumstances or others - for the things which happen in our lives. We lose our patience and wonder why things didn’t happen differently, more quickly, or the way we wanted them to happen. Too often we want you to be a “magic” presence which will, with the wave of a wand, immediately cure our ills, give us success and happiness; but we don’t necessarily want to take responsibility for our attitudes and actions. Things happen which we didn’t plan for and events swirl around us over which we have no control. Forgive us Lord, when we are so busy placing blame that we don’t recognize your presence and love for us. Free us from placing our own desires first and foremost. Grant us your patience. Help us to see the many ways in which you are working in the world for peace and justice, and enable us to be part of that ministry. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Words of Assurance Be at peace. God has forgiven you and offered to you God’s healing love. Accept this free gift, for it is given for you through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of Dedication

Generous God, you have already given us all that we need. Help us trust your continued care, that we may share with others the abundance of your blessings. Strengthen us for service, and remind us of the great joy that awaits those who answer your call. Accept our gifts and give us new songs of praise as we celebrate the opportunity to be in ministry, in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Hymn #140

“Great is Thy Faithfulness”

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father;

there is no shadow of turning with thee;

thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;

as thou hast been, thou forever wilt be.

Refrain:

Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

all I have needed thy hand hath provided;

great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,

sun, moon, and stars in their courses above

join with all nature in manifold witness

to thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love. Refrain

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,

thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;

strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,

blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! Refrain

Psalm 40: 1-4

I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. 2 He drew me up from the desolate pit, out of the miry bog,

and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.

Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.

4 Happy are those who make the Lord their trust, who do not turn to the proud, to

those who go astray after false gods.

Ephesians 4:1-6

I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to

which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience,

bearing with one another in love, 3 making every effort to maintain the unity of the

Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were

called to the one hope of your calling, 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one

God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.

Hymn #496

“Sweet Hour of Prayer”

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!

that calls me from a world of care,

and bids me at my Father's throne

make all my wants and wishes known.

In seasons of distress and grief,

my soul has often found relief,

and oft escaped the tempter's snare

by thy return, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!

the joys I feel, the bliss I share

of those whose anxious spirits burn

with strong desires for thy return!

With such I hasten to the place

where God my Savior shows his face,

and gladly take my station there,

and wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!

thy wings shall my petition bear

to him whose truth and faithfulness

engage the waiting soul to bless.

And since he bids me seek his face,

believe his word, and trust his grace,

I'll cast on him my every care,

and wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

James 1:2-4; 5:7-8, 10-11

My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing

but joy, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance; 4

and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete,

lacking in nothing.

7 Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for

the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early

and the late rains. 8 You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the

coming of the Lord is near.

10 As an example of suffering and patience, beloved, take the prophets who spoke

in the name of the Lord. 11 Indeed we call blessed those who showed endurance.

You have heard of the endurance of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the

Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.

Hymn #534

“Be Still, My Soul”

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on your side.

Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;

leave to your God to order and provide;

in every change God faithful will remain.

Be still, my soul: your best, your heavenly friend

through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul: your God will undertake

to guide the future, as in ages past.

Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake;

all now mysterious shall be bright at last.

Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know

the Christ who ruled them while he dwelt below.

Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on

when we shall be forever with the Lord,

when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,

sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.

Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past,

all safe and blessed we shall meet at last.
