ST. MARY MAGDALEN PARISH 1253 52ND ST SE, KENTWOOD, MICHIGAN

Hello everyone, We constantly give thanks to our mother Church for teaching us a priceless prayer: The Rosary. Indeed, The Rosary is a treasure that needs to pass on from one generation to another. This is a popular prayer that fits people of all ages and at all levels. We have been faithfully praying the Rosary for years. Have you ever wondered why we keep repeating the Hail Mary over and over again when praying it? First, Rosary means “Crown of Roses”. Each time, we say a Hail Mary, we offer to our loving Mother a beautiful Rose. Therefore, when we complete one chaplet of the Rosary, we make a Crown of Roses for Mary. How happy would our Mother be with these spiritual flowers that we offer to her from our hearts. Secondly, the repetitive prayer of the Hail Mary is to exalt Mary and ask for her continual intercession. The first part of it is the greetings of the angel Gabriel to the Blessed Virgin Mary: "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you,

blest are you among women!" (Luke 1:28) and Elisabeth to Mary: "Blest are you among women, and blest is the fruit of your womb!" (Luke 1:41-42). We praise Mary not with our own words but with those of the Bible. The second part is our petition to ask her to pray for us as her children on earth. Thirdly, we recite the Hail Mary not for the words themselves, rather to contemplate the mysteries of the Lord and Mary. Praying the Rosary allows us to meditate the entire gospel; the incarnation, birth, life, suffering, death, resurrection, and glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, we use the Hail Mary as the background music leading us into the sacred mysteries. Through the Rosary, may our blessed Mother lead us closer to her Son, Jesus Chirst. May she stay with us and fill our hearts with peace and hope during this time of crisis.

Blessings always, Sr. Mai Do

Welcome Back to a New School Year in an Uncertain Time

Churches have been allowed to resume at the end of June, even though the crowds can only be 25% of the church capacity. Here at St Mary Magdalen’s Church we’re anticipating the crowd size to increase around Advent and Christmas. That’s why I’ve been working hard to get the Mass projected live in the chapel and family center. We also added an outdoor speaker and prepare to livestream our Mass Services on the Internet if needed. More importantly, we’ve come up with the right protocol of screening and sanitizing our worship space to keep our attendance safe. We’ll use the same protocol for our Faith Formation and Youth programs to keep our attending children safe as well. Our Faith Formation and Youth programs have begun and include two options-in person or online classes– to accommodate the needs of each family. For more details about each option, please contact Michelle, Molly or Allison in the church office. I welcome our children back to another school year and continue to work with you parents, my staff, the Diocese, and the healthcare authority to keep them safe. I ask for your prayers and support as we journey through this uncertain time together. There are several important updates that I want to bring to your attention. First, due to the church shutdown in March, we have not had a proper kickoff for our annual Catholic Services Appeal CSA) for 2020. But, the Diocese has not reduced our parish’s assigned amount of $120,000 either. I ask you to help us get to that goal by year end. Second, 2020 is a stressful & challenging year. As we continue to deal with COVID-19 and other worries, I’m thinking about giving out a small blessed wooden cross to each St Mary Magdalen family around Advent and Christmas to help you find protection and reassurance in our Lord. I realize many of you are facing tough times financially, that’s why I don’t want to ask for another donation for this wonderful project. But, if you or someone you know can help us make some of the crosses, please call the parish office. We only have two more months before Advent is here. We don’t have much time to make several hundreds of them to give out. Please hurry & help! Third, the pandemic has changed our routines and made us adapt new measures to keep everyone safe including screening and sanitizing our gathering areas. So, our monthly Healing Mass with Anointing afterward has been suspended. We don’t know when we can resume them yet. But, if you are dying or having a major surgery and need the Sacrament of Anointing, I will still do that as I’ve done it throughout the church shutdown period. Please call the office to request it. Otherwise, general blessing at Mass is sufficient. Finally, we’ve tried to keep up with many maintenance issues including the parking lot, sound system, Worship screens, masks, security cameras, and other household problems. If you can contribute to the maintenance fund for a year end donation, we’d appreciate it very much. Please consider signing up for electronic contribution in this COVID-19 time. I thank you for everything you’ve done for our parish. May the Lord continue to bless you & keep our parish safe.

+++ Looking ahead to Christmas, I’m working with the different agencies that we help. We may not be able to have the traditional Giving Tree, but we will be able to purchase gifts for those in need. More information will be available as we get closer.

+++ Visit FaithfulCitzenship.org to explore how you can love your neighbors by advocating as a faithful citizen on behalf of those who are poor and vulnerable. As you prepare to vote, read the U.S. bishops’ statement on Forming Conscience for Faithful Citizenship, watch videos and access other great resources on faithful citizenship.

Good News! New directives from the Office of Worship will allow the music ministry to open up: we may have up to 10 people in the choir/ensemble area and may begin rehearsals again. Guidelines will be followed such as mask wearing (except for one cantor), social distancing, and adjusted rehearsal schedules. I am reaching out to the Ensemble and choir members to see who is ready to return to the music ministry. If you are in music ministry and we have not connected, please call me at the parish office or email me at [email protected]. Based on the response, the music groups may look different at first, or even morph over time. Handbells will not resume this fall. It will hopefully reconvene for Easter. The details for Children's choir will be coming out at a later date Despite there being a lot of things that are unsettled, I am content because my goal isn’t simply to “get back to normal” as quickly as possible. I think the only response that won’t drive us crazy is to respond to the situation of the present moment and to do so with as much faith and peace as we can. My goal throughout this pandemic has been to provide beautiful and sacred music that is both worthy of our Sacrifice of the Mass and is a comfort to the people. I know these groups will add so much beauty to the music. Please pray that we stay healthy as we take the necessary steps to be as safe as possible as we regroup.

There are scam emails going around. Please know that if you receive an email asking for financial help from any staff or anyone associated with the church, please do not reply. If you have concerns please call the church office and discus it with us. We will NOT ask for financial assistance through email, we will mail anything that is requesting donations. Thank you,

Hello Everyone, On Wednesday evening we gathered for our first onsite Faith Formation class of the year. We studied the guidelines, formulated a plan, set the protocol, and laid the ground work in order to welcome students back in person, as well as provide an at home option for students in 1st-12th grade. As you read this I am sure we have adjusted our plans and protocol, taking into consideration how smoothly things went. I think this is indicative of our lives right now;

A few weeks ago, I shared that I was reflecting on kindness, mercy, patience, and compassion after being inspired by Psalm 103. Well I can say that others are practicing the same virtues, either by intent or simply by their nature. Over the past several months we have been challenged to find new ways of doing things. We have had to rethink, revise, and reorganize our Formation programs. In doing that I have received tremendous support and assistance. I would like to personally thank Fr. Peter, the entire parish staff, the catechists, parishioners, and Formation parents. At every phase, twist, and turn over the past several weeks, I have been treated with kindness, mercy, patience, and compassion. This could have been a daunting experience for all of us, but as always we have come together as a faith community and supported one another, been considerate of one another’s needs, and shown we are a loving People of God. THANK YOU! Please continue to pray for one another and for the parish community. Blessings, Molly Wisdom

Hello everyone! “I can do all things in him who strengthens me.” That’s from the second reading today, and that’s one of the most famous part of this particular passage. You can probably find a version of this knitted on pillows, printed on T-shirts, or posted in an Instagram story. It serves as a sort of rallying cry, I think, and it’s easy to understand. With God, all things are possible. If we’re walking with God, there’s no limit to the things that we can accomplish. But Paul makes it clear that just because we can do all things with God, we’re not necessarily going to have an easy time of it. In fact, it’s likely that we’ll have to learn, as Paul did, how to “live in humble circumstances,” the secret of “going hungry,” and the reality of “being in need.” Paul writes “in my distress” at the end of the first paragraph, meaning that he was probably going through a rough time in his own life. God wasn’t absent then, however, and He’s not absent now, as we move through a global pandemic together. This week, I pray for Paul’s knowledge: not just that we can do all things, but that God will “fully supply whatever you need.” Peace, Allison
