It’s time to wear a fancy costume and stock-up the desserts, sweets, and beverages to celebrate this much-awaited festival of the year! However, do you know how Halloween got its name and why we celebrate it every year?

Going back to European customs, Halloween started from the old Gaelic celebration called Samhain. The festive day was celebrating the end of summer and the harvest. Eventually, the Pagan Samhain was Christianized into Halloween but later-day traditions still have threads in old myths and beliefs.

With a mixture of Pagan rituals and early Christianity, there were many developments in the celebration, and the roots of Halloween started to develop new traditions. Basically, the word Halloween itself is a Scottish phrase for All Hallows Eve; which implies the night prior to All Saints ‘ Day.

During this time some people believed that the space between spirituality and reality became thin at this particular time of the year. Thus, in order to shield their crops, farmer’s provided a space for the friendly spirits at supper tables and used bonfires to drive away wicked spirits.

Later in the sixteenth century, trick or treating and wearing costumes began in Ireland, Scotland and Wales to guard against the spirits of the dead at the sensitive time of the year.

Here are few great ways to celebrate Halloween

• Try designing your own fancy costume• Go camping, take some s’mores, and share ghost stories around a bonfire• Design a haunted house at your home• Try goofy face painting• Plan a spooky night out or hike with friends• Or just enjoy Trick-or-Treating - either with kids or handing out candy!

How Well Do You Know Halloween?

by Harrington A Lackey

P. J. Morgan Soakenberg was a middle-aged millionaire who lived in the luxurious Hamptons. He collected rare paintings as well as a scholarly critic of Edgar Allan Poe’s literary achievements and had written extensively about the interesting author and his works. His library contained rare volumes about the master of American morbid mysteries as well as many other authors.

A few years ago, an old mansion in northern New York got the attention of many Poe fans when a painting emerged from the old home of one of Poe’s descendants. The large piece of work entitled “Ravens” had been painted and signed by Edgar Allan Poe him-self.

As the news spread among aficionados of the art world, the painting received a lot of attention since nobody knew Poe also dabbled in painting - not even Soakenberg. The work itself appeared entirely black with evil eyes staring out at the viewer, which reminded whoever looked at it, saw into the darkness of the famous writer’s soul.A month after the discovery, Sotheby’s jumped at the chance to auction off the large painting, which would take place in New York’s gallery. Of course, Mr. Soakenberg did not want to miss this once in a lifetime auction for the chance to purchase E.A. Poe’s only known painting.

Long before the bidding started, other wealthy people came to try and take advantage of the sale.

When everyone was seated, the auctioneer announced to all the bidders. “We’ll start the bidding at $100,000.” “120..130..150... 170.” The auctioneer got bids from everybody who could afford it. Then, after “1 million” the competition had gotten serious, but Soakenberg kept raising his paddle.

“5 million!”... 7 million?... 10 million?” Soakenberg kept his paddle raised.“50 million?” Now the competition continued between him and another wealthy gentleman.

“55..56..60? 100..110... 120..125?” His competitor dropped his paddle while Soakenberg raised his, wearing a big smile. “Do I hear 126... 127?... Going once... going twice... Sold to the gentleman for 127 million!” The gavel came down hard and the bid was final. Soakenberg had won the Poe painting.

His fellow bidders congratulated him, even though they had lost the painting to the triumphant owner. The sale made instant news among the art world as major newspapers interviewed the new owner.

Within the next few days, Soakenberg was driven by his chauffeur to New York City, where a Brinks truck awaited the tycoon’s arrival and ten police cars with NYPD’s finest had parked on the side at an undisclosed location. Soakenberg opened the door and walked confidently toward the truck with the painting. He pulled it out and nodded with approval.

Suddenly, attention turned to a woman who had been standing out on the ledge of a three-story building, threatening to jump. The Brinks truck was parked beneath her, and Soakenberg stood next to it holding the painting in front of him. He looked up and saw the woman, just as firemen were pulling up.

“I’m gonna jump!” the woman said as she cried about her miserable life. Just as she stepped off the ledge, a fireman ran in front of Soakenberg and grabbed the painting to catch the woman. When she jumped, she fell through the one and only Poe painting and destroyed it. Fortunately, it braced the woman, slightly slowing her descent before she hit the pavement. Soakenberg’s painting had been completely destroyed with a huge hole in it. However, the woman lived and had been sent to the hospital in extremely critical condition.

The news about Poe’s painting that braced the woman “with the only painting by Edgar Allan Poe” received world attention. A press conference was called as soon as the story about the only Poe painting’s status was revised. The woman who had jumped was in intensive care at a local hospital and wanted to thank the man and his painting that saved her life. But the millionaire just sulked in his mansion; he did not grant any interviews.

The millionaire was asked if he would buy another painting by Poe if another painting by Poe was discovered.

To which Soakenberg said, “Nevermore. Nevermore.”

My grandmother lived during the Great Depression. We loved hearing her reminisce about the hard times but always reverently encompassed in the love her dad gave his 5 children. My great grandfather lost his wife (my great grandmother) two weeks after their youngest child was born due to scarlet fever. Great Grandfather was left with 5 children to raise ranging in age from 2 weeks to 7 years. My grandmother was second to the oldest and the only daughter. I can still hear her tell us how they were quarantined at the time of their mother’s funeral due to the scarlet fever in their home and watched from their living room window as their mother’s casket passed in the funeral procession on its way to the cemetery.

My great grandfather never remarried. My grandmother, being the only daughter, did much of the housework. If the kids ever dared complain of school she would gently remind us how lucky they were to go to school. She cried when as a sophomore in high school her dad needed her at home and she no longer could attend school.

Times were lean during the Great Depression so scrimping and saving and reusing everything possible was a way of life. Today people still love to save money and reduce waste through clever DIY projects but in those days “doing it yourself ” wasn’t a trend; it was a necessity.

In those difficult times, if women wanted to provide for their families, they had to get creative--especially when it came to clothing.

During the 1930’s flour sacks featured colorful patterns for women to make dresses. Innovative and desperate, women often emptied the sacks and used the fabric to make clothing. When flour manufacturers saw women turning their flour sacks into clothing, dia-pers, dish cloths, and more, they started packing their flour in pretty patterns. And it wasn’t just children. Women made dresses for themselves out of the bags as well. Whether in the kitchen or helping my grandfather outdoors, my grandmother wore these dresses she sewed from feed sacks!

When the clothing finally wore out, after being passed down from older sibling to youngest, my grandmother cut the salvageable pieces and made them into quilts. There are stories and memories in every square. My mother can still look at some of the quilt pieces and see her mother wearing that particular dress or recognize pieces in the quilts from clothing she wore as a child.

There are many ways to keep one’s ancestors alive. Pictures speak volumes, stories especially when recorded in an ancestor’s voice are treasures, videos are priceless, and many other ways. Yet the one that speaks to me every night is the quilt that covers my bed with warmth and memories in each lovingly sewed square. Some amazing bedtime stories are told to great grandchildren as they too snuggle in their great grandmother’s handiwork.

My grandmother passed away in 2012 --appropriately on the first day of spring. It was a gorgeous bright day in Ghent Minnesota as we gathered around her grave site. The viewing at the funeral home was arrayed with grandmother’s handiwork-jars of home canned fruits and vegetables on a table covered with one of her treasured quilts. A tribute to her life of giving and sharing.

by Emily Perkes, a Mother to three young children, First Grade Teacher, and enjoys helping her husband run their outdoor store from their home.

Halloween is a favorite holiday for young and old alike. Kids love Halloween because they get to wear costumes and go out trick or treating. But being out can be dangerous. To keep children safe, many parents these days are deciding to throw a Halloween party for them instead of taking them out trick or treating. Or if, you don’t have kids, you can always have a Halloween party for adults-- it’s a great way for grown ups to get a chance to act like kids again.

Whether hosting an adult Halloween party or one for the kiddos, one of the most important things to think about is... the food! Below are some quick and easy Halloween recipes for your next party. Your kids will love them and most adults will too.

Dear Friend,

Healthsource Chiropractic puts their patients first and strives for successful treatment. Please enjoy a successful story from Stacey U.

“I am a mid 50’s woman, minimally to moderately active, mom of recent graduate, wife, optometrist and business owner. I enjoy playing recreational tennis, watching Netflix, shopping, and playing games. My pain didn’t fully prevent me from doing things I enjoy but made it difficult and unable to perform for as long as I would want. I was getting headaches regularly, which stopped me from doing daily activities that I enjoy. The headaches have been going on for so long that I forgot what it’s like to function without a headache.

On the first Saturday in December 2018 I woke up with a numbness and tingling in my left arm but no more pain than usual. I was concerned and knew I had needed to seek help that’s when I ran into Dr. Kyra at a local craft show. She introduced herself and I shared the pain, headaches, and numbness I was experiencing, Dr. Kyra invited me into the clinic for a full consultation, neurological, orthopedic, and chiropractic exam, and any necessary X-rays. Dr. Kyra is very knowledgeable and confident, I trusted her.

My overall experience at Healthsource Chiropractic of Chanhassen is FANTASTIC! From day

one, I felt very much at ease, confident, and encouraged. Dr. Kyra is so caring, efficient, smart, and trustworthy. The whole staff – from Jill at the front desk and Tori and Elsa in the physical therapy – I felt exceptionally cared for. After going through the recommended and personalized treatment, I am a new person. I never knew how physically and mentally tense I was from the neck and shoulder issues I was experiencing. Today, I

don’t use ibuprofen, my posture is better, energy levels are higher, and learned how to relax my muscle when tense to decrease muscle tension.

I have received chiropractic care on and off for 30 years. Healthsource Chiropractic of Chanhassen and Dr. Kyra stand out from other chiropractic care due to their personalized treatment plan(s) with physical therapy, the chiropractic knowledge of the doctors, the care they give you, and the whole team. They work well together, and

you can tell they love what they do – which fosters confidence and encouragement.”
