Our Annual Appeal begins this Sunday, October 15th. As our 2017—2018 campaign for the Diocesan Annual Ap-peal begins, we ask that you take time to pray and consider how each of us can help. Last year, we had 40% of parishioners participating. Just think what we could do if 100% of our parish-ioners made a pledge to the Appeal. If you have not pledged before, please consider it this year. Our goal for this year is $39,810. As a reminder, any amount raised above our goal comes directly back to the parish.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

~ OCTOBER 22 ~

We will be joining every Catholic Parish around the world in prayer and support on October 22. This annual celebration helps young

mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay lead-ers serve the poorest of the poor. Checks may be written to St. Patrick Parish and submitted through the weekly collection or the parish office. This year, you are also invited to “Chat With The Pope” and learn more about his missions. Using Facebook Messenger, scan the World Mission Sunday poster on display in church with your mobile device, or learn more at ChatWithThePope.org. Hurricane Relief: The faithful of the Diocese of La Crosse have been exceedingly generous in donating over $230,000 to hurricane relief for Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and the sur-rounding areas. Great devastation is still being experienced in Puerto Rico. If you would still like to make a donation, you may send your check payable to “Catholic Charities” and write “Puerto Rico Relief” in the memo line, to Catholic Charities, Puerto Rico Relief, 3710 East Ave. S., La Crosse, WI 54601. You may also donate online, by visiting the website: www.diolc.org/social-concerns for instructions.

Virtue Vignettes: Prudence 2-Minute 2-Paragraph Explanations on the Virtues

Saint Thomas More was killed by King Henry VIII in 1535. Not long before his martyrdom, Thomas More was the Lord Chancellor of England -– respected by the people and a friend and close advisor to the king. Howev-er, when the king decided to wrongly divorce his wife and sought an annulment from the pope, Thomas had to care-fully discern what action he would take. At first, he simply declined to sign the document requesting annulment. Lat-er, he did not attend the coronation of the new queen, and in the end he refused to swear an oath of fidelity to the king who had declared his authority over the Church in England. This refusal lead to his imprisonment and execution.

The Catechism tells us that prudence helps us “discern our true good in every circumstance and to choose the right means of achieving it.” (¶ 1806) St. Thomas dis-cerned that it was right to resist the king (it was the true good) and that the proper way to do this in the end was to refuse the oath of fidelity (the right means). The best way for us to grow in the virtue of prudence is by examination: reviewing the day and recalling the things we did (was it the true good?) and how we did them (was it the right means?). Far from second-guessing, this should be a prayerful review where we ask the Father with great confi-dence to reveal our failures and successes. Review allows us to grow in prudence so that when faced with difficult decisions we can respond with grace and confidence just like St. Thomas More.
