CANTORS AT MASS

2 November 7, 2021

National Vocation Awareness Week will be celebrated

in our country November 7-13, 2021. Please ask Our Lord for more dedicated, holy priests, deacons, and consecrated men and women. May they be in-spired by Jesus Christ, supported by our faith community, and respond gen-erously to God's gift of vocation. God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son’s Kingdom as priests, deacons, and consecrated persons. Send your Holy Spirit to help others to respond generously and courageously to your call. May our community of faith support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth and young adults. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of

Next weekend, (November 13-14) our parish will conduct the Annual Seminaries’ Appeal. Reflect on the future of our Church and consider a

gift to support these young men on their path to priesthood. If you would like to donate today, please visit archden.org/futurepriests.

Thank you.

I t is during November that the Church med-itates on the Com-munion of Saints,

which is the charitable link with the faithful who have

already reached heaven, the faithful departed who are still being purified from their sins in purgatory and of the pilgrim faithful here on earth. "In this wonderful exchange, the holiness of one profits oth-ers, well beyond the harm that the sin of one could cause others. Thus recourse to the communion of saints lets the contrite sinner be more promptly and efficaciously purified of the punishments for sin." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1475).

On November 1st the Church celebrates the Solemnity of All Saints, honoring all those faithful in heaven. Throughout November the Church also remembers our faithful departed. The need and duty of prayer for the departed souls has been acknowl-edged by the Church at all times. It is recommended in the Scriptures of the Old Testament: “It is there-fore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins” (2 Macc 12: 46).

The Catholic Church prays for all the dead, especially in November. It is a month of prayerful solidarity the living with those who repent in Purga-tory. They need the prayer of the living to shorten the period of repentance and unite themselves with God in heaven. After death, souls can no longer do anything about themselves and therefore need the prayers of the living. Purgatory is the state of souls who left this world in such a state of sin that does not allow them to be fully united with God in heav-

en. The greatest punishment for a soul in Purgatory is a temporary separation from God. The human soul, recognizing God as the fullness of love after death, wants to be united with Him and at the same time recognizes that it is not yet worthy of it and seeks the possibility of purification itself. God re-sponds to this soul's desire through purgatory, and therefore it is a work of God's mercy.

The dogma about the existence of Purgatory was announced by the Catholic Church at the Coun-cil of Lyons in 1274 and confirmed and explained at the Council of Trent (1545-1563) in a separate de-cree. This dogma is based on the premises of the Scripture, and on the church tradition dating back to the 2nd century. He emphasizes two truths: the ex-istence of purgatory as a posthumous punishment, and that the faithful on earth can help souls in pur-gatory.

Among the various forms of prayerful re-membrance for the dead, the prayer for the faithful departed in November occupy a special place. Cath-olics write the names of their deceased loved ones on cards and bring them to the parish office with a voluntary offering. The priest prepares a list of the names of the deceased, which he remembers during the Mass, calling the gathered people to pray for them. Most often, the faithful recite the traditional prayer "Eternal Rest" for the deceased.

We believe that those Holy Souls for whom we pray will continue to pray for us after they have been released from Purgatory. It's a comforting thought, and one that should encourage us, especial-ly in this month of November, to offer our prayers for the Holy Souls. Let’s help them get to heaven as soon as possible!

NOVEMBER: A month to pray for our departed loved ones.

Bethlehem Handicrafts continues to provide a platform for the Christian artists of Bethlehem to showcase their beautiful olive wood figurines in these unprecedented times. Communion Hymn

Thank you to Steve and Sherstin Lommatzsch. In thanksgiving for our wonderful parents without whom we could not have become who we are today.

PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil;

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God,

thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Recessional Hymn

HAIL HOLY QUEEN

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us, and after this exile show unto us the

blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Amen.
