OAKLAND, NJ - The 2012-13 Stan Niemiec Youth
Travel League kicked off with a resonance at Holiday
Bowl when eighteen-year-old Colette Malyack charged
out of the gate, shredding the maples with a 300 opener,
followed with 211,226 and finished with a career best 737
set. An FDU freshman, Colette was a four-year all-star
kegler for DePaul H.S. and ended with a 206 average for
SNYTL defending champion Holiday. This year, she’s
joined by her talented brother Joe who scored 225, 212-
618, along with newcomers’ Frank Olandesi 217 and
Caitlyn Castillo 181 as their Holiday II team coasted to
victory.
Boonton served notice that they’ll be a force this season
as anchor Justin Puchalski hammered out 226, 278, 224-
728 in leading his squad past Fair Lawn, 2875-2730.
Justin, who smashed his way to a pair of 299 games this
past summer, should emerge as one of this year’s top per-
formers. Also scoring well for Boonton were Karl
Kattermann with 237-611, Pat Teshima 201 and first-year
bowler Brian McGrath 174. Fair Lawn’s Hassan Izzard
rolled 219-532, Steven Plaszky 192-519, Hunter Perry
175-519 and Tyler Nappi a pair of above-average scores.
Holiday I swept their match with Bowler City I as new-
comer Grahm Muligan paced the victors with 247, 212;
Brian Rizzi added 225-602 while Dillon and Nick Cilento
finished with 190-559 and 193-555 respectively. BCI was
anchored by John Draney 216, 211 while Rob Gilbert, Jr
posted 215, new kegler Vinny Santoro 181 and Ryan Perez
175.
Bowler City II took seven points from sister entry
Bowler City III behind James Kane 246, 215-621,
Jonmikal Sepero 189-533 and Welmer Paguay 198. Highs
for BC III were Tiffany Sucero 157-451, Olivia Wank 153
and Ariel Wallace with two over-average games.
Rounding out the day’s match-ups, Montvale blanked
Bowler City 4 behind Kyle Ladewig 198-534, Matthew
Russell 188-524, and Katie Didonato 162. Tops for BC4
were Nick Ferrante 171,160 and Alijah Jackson 162.
18-Year-Old Colette Malyack Strikes 300 at Holiday Bowl By Vince Albrecht
VIENNA, Austria - In front of the
biggest crowd ever at Plus Bowling
in Vienna, Austria, PBA Tour star
Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas,
captured his 14th PBA Tour title
and his second Columbia 300
Vienna Open win when he defeated
fellow American star Sean Rash,
257-214, in the title match.
By winning the event, Barnes
took a 54-point lead over Rash in
the race for the third and final berth
in the Bayer Advanced Aspirin
World Bowling Tour men’s finals,
presented by the PBA. With only
the Australian Masters remaining in
the 2012 WBT points race – and 50
points available to the winner –
Barnes has officially locked Rash
out of the WBT finals, which will
be conducted during the PBA
World Series of Bowling IV at
South Point Casino and Hotel in
Las Vegas on Saturday, Nov. 10.
Barnes, who won his first PBA
International Tour title, also collect-
ed a first prize of roughly $9,000.
Rash, who lives in Montgomery,
Ill., made a valiant bid for the title,
striking out in the final game of
Round 3 to advance from fifth place
into the stepladder finals as the No.
3 qualifier. Rash then eliminated
England’s Stuart Williams, 191-
181, and Tommy Jones of
Simpsonville, S.C., 189-158, to
advance to the title match.
Heading into the Australian
Masters (which concludes Oct. 27
in Sydney), reigning WBT men’s
champion Mika Koivuniemi of
Finland has retained the top qualify-
ing position for the three-man
stepladder finals with 408 points.
Mike Fagan (342 points) and
Barnes (328 points) are second and
third, respectively. Rash is fourth
with 274 points.
The women’s WBT rankings are
dominated by American PBA mem-
bers with Missy Parkin of Lake
Forest, Calif., leading the way with
329 points. Kelly Kulick of Union,
N.J., is second with 319, while Liz
Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., is
third with 295. Defending WBT
women’s champion Carolyn Dorin-
Ballard has a chance to overtake
Johnson, but is not entered in the
Australian event.
The World Bowling Tour, con-
ducted by the World Tenpin
Bowling Association, is made up of
a series of events around the world.
Players earn points based on where
they finish in each event. The top
three men and top three women on
the basis of total points over a span
of two years are invited to compete
in the Bayer Advanced Aspirin
WBT Finals presented by the PBA.
The WBT Finals will pay a total
prize fund of $70,000 with the win-
ner of each division earning
$20,000, second place $10,000 and
third place $5,000. The WBT finals
will be conducted on a special lane
installation at South Point Hotel and
Casino on Saturday, Nov. 10, and
will air on ESPN as the first event
of the PBA Tour’s 2012-13 televi-
sion season on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 1
p.m. ET.

One of the greatest feats in
bowling history unfolded more
than 50 years ago.
It was the TV winning streak
piled up by the late Lou Campi of
Dumont, N.J., a member of the
ABC Hall of Fame and half a
dozen other Halls. Campi rolled
with the top teams, won the
national doubles with Andy
Varipapa, and again with Lindy
Faragalli, and more than 100
assorted titles. He gained special
attention as "Wrongfoot Lou"
because he finished on his right
foot even though he was a righty,
and according to the books, that's
the wrong foot.
A mason by trade, Campi was
strong physically, but even
stronger mentally and early
acquired the reputation as one of
the best clutch bowlers in the
game. That, and his pride and
confidence in his ability, made
him an almost perfect performer
for TV. Prior to the streak he had
established himself as an out-
standing TV performer, winning a
couple of cars, pretty fair cash for
the times, and all kinds of mer-
chandise. He made constant TV
appearances across the country.
No score or record bothered
him, and he never worried about
how high scores might be. He
often said, "If a man bowled it, a
man can beat it." The TV shows
were aired live from New York
City when Campi was 52.
Two years later Campi made
history when he won the first offi-
cial tourney conducted by the
PBA.
The show was called, "East vs.
West" and was scheduled for 13
weeks. The format was simple. A
list of bowlers from the East and
another of bowlers from the west
was compiled, and when a bowler
lost he would be replaced the fol-
lowing week by the next man on
the list. The winner would return.
Campi didn't give his fellow
Easterners a chance to bowl. He
won all 13 scheduled matches.
In order he defeated: Therm
Gibson, Johnny King, Bill Lillard,
Tom Hennessey, Ed Lubanski,
Ned Day, Dick Weber, Don
Carter, Steve Nagy, Ed Kawolics,
Buzz Fazio, Dick Hoover and Joe
Wilman.
That completed the 13 week
run. But the producer and
announcer, Lou Marks, the owner
of the host center, Nick Gianos of
Bowlmor Recreation, and the
main sponsor, Kitchens of Sara
Lee, all knew they had a big hit,
and extended the show. Campi
beat Buddy Bomar, and an addi-
tional week was added, the 15th,
when Campi lost to Lillard, 665 to
662.
The Bowlmor lanes were known
as the most difficult around; and
the best in the East struggled to
average close to 200. Campi aver-
aged 232 plus for his 45 games,
and only four were under 200. He
made a number of last game
comebacks in the three game
tests, and thrice threatened a 300
game, for which a bonus prize of
$100,000 had been posted.
If the names of the bowlers seem
familiar, they should. All were
elected to the ABC Hall except
King. Kitchens of Sara Lee, now
a giant firm involved with dozens
of products, featured just cheese
cake and coffee cake.
Pat McDonough, then the statis-
tical genius and bowling writer on
the sports staff of the New York
World Telegram, figured the odds
against Campi winning 14
straight matches were 16,383 to 1.
Sadly, no film or tape of any
portion of the shows were pre-
served, because in those days the
tape was erased, and used over
again. Some recordings and
home movies do pop up now and
then.
