Creating accommodation that works
Leanne Pearman, CEO, Western Australia Individualised Services
‘Creating flexible accommodation options’- Fri. 18th Oct. 9.30am
Leanne Pearman has been involved in the lives of people with disability and their families for more than 25yrs. Leanne contributes experiences of building strong, respectful relationships by standing with people, together with practical and strategic thinking with innovative individualised services.
Leanne held a variety of positions both in government and non-government organisations and previously was the CEO of ‘My Place’ in WA.
WA has had individualised funding since 1998 (25yrs). Over that time we have supported individuals and families to explore a whole range of individual, flexible and creative support arrangements including Shared Management, whereby individuals and families share the management and control of their service (such as individual accommodation) with an organisation.
Leanne will share the stories of what they have learnt together, what has worked, what continues to work, and what doesn't work. In her current role at WAIS she supports organisations to create change
in this new era - both strategically, structurally and operationally.

Supported Decision-Making:
Kate Rea, Policy Officer of ADACAS
Supporting people to make decisions using the web!
Good decisions are key to success. Decision making is a skill that you can learn. You can also get support to make decisions that are important to you.
www.support-my-decision.org.au is a web site that can help people with disabilities learn more about decision making. You can use it to make a decision. Or to teach others how to support you to decide. This session will explore how you can use the web site to support you to make a decision.
This website was developed by ADACAS with a grant from the NDIS. ADACAS is an independent, not-for profit, advocacy organisation helping people with disabilities, older people and their carers.
John Chesterman, Manager of Policy & Education, Office of the Public Advocate (OPA)
The OPA Supported Decision Making Project
OPA has received funding to undertake a project on
Supported Decision-Making, with support from VALID.

Individual Support is Working!
Stories - A Home of My Own!
Karlene Legg from Western Australia will tell you about how she fought hard to get her own unit in the community, after living in institutions since she was young. It took 2 years of planning with her support network to achieve. She loves her unit, even cleaning it up! She loves being able to choose what she eats and watch TV until late. Luke Nelson from Melbourne will talk about how he has been is now enjoying his own house like any young person in their twenties. This has been made possible through an Individual Support Package (ISP) . Simone Stevens with the support of her family and friends made the move to the community some years ago and she wouldn't change it for the world. She is a well known community leader and a tireless advocate.
