Loki, Chariots and Bonnie’s Tevis Adventure (Part 1) – by Bonnie Mielke We took the horses to Robie on Thursday. Remember alwys that life is an adventure. On the way there, we were going up the last mountain; a red truck pulled up behind us and turned on the Forest Service Road. The driver swung around us and said that the left rear wheel of the trailer was wobbling! Yikes!! Because we had been there the day before, we knew that we has 12 miles to go. Soon, we noticed that there were a few sprinkles on the windshield. I told Mary that it ‘never rains here’. In a few minutes, it was pouring AND hailing pea sized hail. The ground was white! We stayed in the truck for a few minutes when we got to camp until the hail stopped. I saw some guys standing under an awning and went over to check out the situation. One of them was Kevin Waters, a former Chicagoan who competed in UMECRA in the 90’s and has since moved to Arizona. Kevin suggested that I looked down the road they were on. About ½ a block down was a perfect spot. Crockett Dumas was parked next door. He was a past president of AERC whom we met years ago at some New Mexico rides. I was amazed that he remembered me. I got a prime spot next to the vetting area, close to the meeting ‘meadow’ and vendors. WOW! What a relief. After we got parked, the people in the red pickup, along with our neighbor Mike, came by and fixed my wheel. Endurance people sure do take carei of each other. Everyon at the ride, competitors, volunteers, management were so helpful and friendly. The treated us like minor celebrities because we came from so far. Naturally, on Frriday, we made all of the normal preparations for a 100 in the morning. Mary and I rode the start so I knew where I was going. Ann (Kitzmiller) arrived with her brother and a friend about 1:00. Ann was riding Chariots on the ride. We took the horses over for vetting at a time when there was no one there. We walked into the area and heard ‘get over here Bonnie, I’ve been waiting for you’. What a greeting – Jim Baldwin again! What a pal. The rest of the day was meetings, dinner and trying to sleep. Saturday, Tevis Day, the day I had been waiting for about 35 years! Our start was great, no rearing, running off, wasting energy. I was making good progress, trotting along with everyone else, when just before Squaw Valley, I felt a ‘pop’. The fender had broken, come unstitched. Naturally, Loki wouldn’t stand still to fix it, so the repair job took longer than needed, but soon we were off, up and up to Squaw Peak. Rider Representative nominations are now open. These
positions are held for two years. Rider Representatives
are the rider’s voice and vote on the UMECRA Board
of Directors. Ride managers are not eligible for these
positions. All other UMECRA members in good
standing can be nominated or nominate themselves.
Availability for attendance at the three yearly board
meetings held in January, March and November is
