Welcome to Birdlink Sanctuary NewsletterFrom Chief Poop Scooper

It has been an eventful year and I forget to tell everyone, everything. So a monthly note/newsletter will keep you all informed and you can pass it on to your friends that may want to be involved too.

As some may know, Jim and I have been caring for birds for many years and bearing the expense on our own. But economics and time have changed that, so we decided to become a tax deductible, nonprofit charity. Much easier said than accomplished. We incorporated in February 2010 and filed our application for tax exempt status with the IRS. Can you say “Hold your breath?” In September we received our approval, after multiple phone calls, faxes, mailings and tears. Well maybe not tears. It will take another 100 days for Birdlink Sanctuary to be included in the IRS electric files. I can’t make any heated comments here, but I am sure you can hear what I am thinking. :-)

Through the summer we built, cleaned, cleared and planted the Birdlink environment. We were able to participate in two events, details and photos on www.Birdlink.com. And even had a garage sale fund raiser. Birdlink is blessed with wonderful volunteers and loving donors that make all this possible. The winter quarters are even ready for the large birds to move in when the weather turns cold.

Now for the hard part, for me, rehoming some of the birds. We will create a photo gallery of all the birds that are ready for adoption. I can’t image parting with any of them, but I can’t be selfish,, these wonderful creatures need their own people. The pictures will appear next month, on line at www.Birdlink.com.

One last important note, we have a Paypal account on our website for donations and later to buy items offered by Birdlink and created by our volunteers, some very talented people.

Wings and Thingsby Jackie Smith

In the wild, flying is essential to a bird's survival; there is no question about that. However, there are many questions concerning whether or not to clip a domesticated birds wings. Most of us probably have a definitive opinion about this issue, and I am one of them. Here is one of the reasons why I think clipping a bird's wings is a good idea. My White-Capped Pionus, Poco, hadn't had his wings clipped for quite some time. I didn't want to do it myself (I really don't like having to force my bird to be still. He doesn't like it either), and the woman that used to do it, moved 2 1/2 hours away from where I live. I often take Poco around with me throughout the day, including when I go outdoors for one reason or another. If I'm going to be outside for any length of time, I take him out in a cage. Short trips, however, I just carry him along perched on my hand. The last time I did this, he was startled by a loud noise, and flew off my hand. He was quickly out of sight....down the driveway, and GONE. I live on a lake and I was panicked that he might have flown into it. Naturally, I took off running to follow him, but when I got around the corner and didn't see him, I almost cried. I ran down to the lake, calling his name, but got no response. The guilt, shame, fear, and hopelessness almost got the best of me. My neighbors have an extended porch off the back of their house and when I got close to it, crying out Poco's name, he cried back to me. I nearly flew over the side of their porch, still didn't see Poco, called him again, and there he was............ready to step up and go home. If birds could talk (oh, that's right SOME of them do, just not Poco!) I'm sure he would have told me he was happy I found him; that he'd had enough adventure for one day.

Birdlink Sanctuary ActivitiesIMPORTANT NOTE: We are a gated, patrolled sanctuary, access to the property is controlled.

You must call and arrange for us to let you in, in advance.Senior Sitters : a special program for special volunteers that will come to the Sanctuary to sit

by the aviaries and talk, read, sing or play an instrument to the birds. The birds need to have human contact. Quality of singing voice is not an issue. The birds are not critics. Risqué songs are out. These guys can talk and repeat what they hear!! :-O

Volunteer: that describes any one that does just about anything that will benefit the birds. We tentatively schedule every Saturday, but that is confirmed every week. Some volunteers can come out during the week, which is great. Birds poop 24 -7. We have people that pressure clean cages, chop vegetables, feed the birds, clean aviaries, weed gardens, make signs, make birdie bread and clear brush. Over the winter we are planning to make bird projects, for sale and for chewing by the birds. One volunteer has offered to make a quilt for a fund raiser. We have a photo buff but we need someone that can write and create a monthly newsletter.

November 14th, Sunday afternoon from 1pm to 5 pm. A pot luck lunch for all the volunteers and their families. Birdlink is providing the location, meat and tea. Bring a covered dish, and a chair. I have invited all the volunteers from Parker Paws to join us. As I mentioned we are gated so an RSVP is essential to gain access. Send an email with who and how many are coming to: [email protected]. We also welcome anyone that is interested in being a volunteer and wants to meet us.
