THE GUN REGISTRY AND YOUR SAFETY
Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff, M.P. Andrew Kania and Mayor Susan
Fennel meet in Brampton to discuss issues of concern with Bramptonians
Dear friend:
Thank you for taking the time to read my Parliamentary report. I have worked
extremely hard on your behalf since my election, approximately two years ago.
During that time I have represented Canada abroad in Australia as the House of
Commons Chair of Parliament’s Joint Committee for the Scrutiny of Regulations. I
had a private meeting with Pope Benedict XVI at his summer residence, and traveled
to Poland to meet with Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, Pope John Paul II’s former
Principal Secretary.
I also met with parliamentarians in England and in Norway, as part of Canada’s
Public Safety and National Security Committee.
In Ottawa, in addition to my committee work, I have spoken in Parliament countless
times on issues of concern to you, including: the economy, pensions, public safety and
human rights issues.
In Brampton, I have met and assisted thousands of people. I have held multiple open
houses to keep myself accessible to all.
In short, I am at your service. It is an honour to be your Member of Parliament. No
one will ever work harder for you, or care more. I am always available to provide
assistance to you. Do not hesitate to contact me or my office. That is a
sincere offer.
My best to you and your family.

PARLIAMENTARY REPORT OCTOBER 2010
www.AndrewKania.ca
OTTAWA – As Parliament sets to resume this fall, Liberal House Leader David
McGuinty today, September 15, 2010, announced the Liberal nominees for the
House of Commons Committees chaired by the Official Opposition, including
Brampton West MP Andrew Kania.
Stated Mr. David McGuinty, “after consultation with Liberal Leader Michael
Ignatieff, Deputy Leader Ralph Goodale and our Chief Opposition Whip Marcel
Proulx, I am pleased to announce that five experienced Liberal MPs have been
nominated for these important roles,” said Mr. McGuinty.
Liberal Party nominees for Committee Chairs include:
Andrew Kania – Standing Joint Committee on Scrutiny of Regulations
Hedy Fry – Standing Committee on the Status of Women
John McKay – Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates
Shawn Murphy – Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and
Ethics
Joe Volpe – Standing Committee on Public Accounts
“Committees are where a lot of Parliament’s work gets done,” said Mr. McGuinty.
“Each of these MPs will bring a wealth of knowledge and parliamentary experience
to the job, ensuring that the issues that matter to Canadians are scrutinized in a fair
and thorough manner.
The Liberal Party has a strong team and we are committed to holding the
Conservative government to account in this upcoming session of Parliament,”
concluded Mr. McGuinty. “We look forward to building on the constructive work
done by many of Parliament’s committees last session and throughout the summer.”
As a member of Canada’s Public Safety and National Security Committee, over many hours in committee, I extensively studied whether the existing gun registry should be
maintained. My only priority is whether it makes the lives of Bramptonians and Canadians safer. The overwhelming evidence is that the registry should be maintained, at an
estimated cost of 1 to 3 million dollars per year. Long guns are the number one weapon used in domestic violence and murders. The objective evidence is just too strong.
Your safety demanded the retention of the gun registry, and on September 22, 2010 I voted in Parliament to keep the registry, as did every one of my Liberal colleagues. Every
single Conservative M.P. voted to scrap the registry, as did 6 N.D.P. Members of Parliament.
Only the Liberal Party sided with virtually all Chiefs of Police, police officers, women's advocates, emergency room physicians and suicide prevention workers, who pleaded
with the Conservatives not to destroy this crime prevention and life saving tool. In the words of the recently released report of the R.C.M.P., the gun registry is: “cost effective
in reducing firearms related crime.”
I will always act to protect you, and your family.

TAKING ACTION ON THE ISSUES
GREEN JOBS
M.P. Andrew Kania stated: “The Conservative government spent over 1.3 billion
dollars on the recent G8/G20 summit. In contrast, the 2009 G8/G20 summit in
London, England only cost a financially responsible 30 million dollars.
Why the difference?
As a member of Canada's Public Safety and National Security Committee, I am
working for you to demand answers.”
G8/G20 COST CONTROL
Canada lost 139,000 jobs in July. Where is Canada’s job creation program?
The Liberal Party will institute a jobs creation initiative to deal with the hundreds of
thousands of jobs lost during the Conservatives time in power, including the creation
of long term career positions in the green economy.
The federal government’s Health Care Accord with the provinces expires in 2014. Stated M.P. Kania: “Canadians deserve and expect comprehensive and accessible health care.” In the
2004 budget, the former Liberal government increased health care funding by over 9 billion to keep our universal health care system strong. This included a 3 billion dollar increase in
federal health transfers to the provinces to enhance healthcare in Canada.
The question is, do you trust Stephen Harper to fight for our universal health care system? In 2006 Mr. Harper campaigned on a platform advocating a “mix of public and private health
care delivery.” He has previously stated that: “A government monopoly is not the only way to deliver health care to Canadians,” and that the federal government must “remove any
barriers, any chill to increase private capital investment plans.” Stated M.P. Kania: “I will always fight to protect our Canadian Values, which includes universal publicly funded health
care.”

FAIR TAX CUTS
As you know Mr. Speaker, I am a proud first generation Polish Canadian.
On June 13 I was honoured to welcome to both my riding of Brampton West and church of
St. Eugene de Mazenod, His Eminence Josef Cardinal Glemp of Poland, His Grace Thomas
Collins, the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland, Mayor Susan Fennell, my Liberal
colleagues the MP for Etobicoke Centre and former MP Jesse Fliss, and other dignitaries.
We celebrated the laying of the cornerstone at the building site of our new church. This
cornerstone is an actual piece of St. Peter`s tomb in Rome, and was blessed by Pope John
Paul II, adding to the significance of the occasion.
I would like to express my congratulations and thanks to everyone involved in making the
building of this church, of which I am a proud member, a success.
Special recognition must go to Father Provincial Janusz Blazejak and the Pastor of
St. Eugene de Mazenod, Father Adam Filas. Without their dedication, this project would
have never happened.
I would also like to wish both Father Adam Filas and Father Andrzej Sowa, the Pastor of
St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, congratulations on the 20th Anniversary of their Ordination,
which also took place this past Sunday.

CENSUS SENSIBILITY
HUMAN RIGHTS PETITION
Thank you Mr. Speaker. Bonjour, Sasrikal, Namaste.
As you know Mr. Speaker, this petition was supposed to be presented yesterday, when hun-
dreds of Canadians traveled to Ottawa to remember the thousands of Sikhs killed in India
in November of 1984.
However, prior to the hearing of petitions the Conservatives brought a procedural motion
and then voted in favour of skipping past petitions, so the tabling of this petition yesterday
was blocked.
Today, one day late, I have the honour of presenting a petition signed by thousands of Ca-
nadians, remembering the thousands of Sikhs killed in India over two days in November of
1984.
As you know Mr. Speaker, Members of Parliament are not allowed to endorse the contents
of a petition. However, in tabling this petition, I do wish to offer a few personal words
about this tragedy.
First, I would like to remember the victims and their families, and offer my sincere condo-
lences. This petition is truly about them.
Second, I would like to use this solemn occasion to reflect on Canadian ideals of justice
and tolerance. We hold those values to our hearts as we remember and honour those who
were victims of hatred.
Mr. Speaker, the essence of this petition is the pursuit of justice, closure and reconciliation,
within a peaceful and united India.

Canadians are suffering. All recent economic indicators are showing that, despite an
approximate 60 billion deficit, the Conservative’s stimulus program is not working.
Yet Prime Minister Harper has stated that no new measures will be introduced in
Parliament.
The Liberal Party believes that government must be used for good. We must take
additional steps to assist Canada’s economic recovery.
We simply cannot afford to do nothing, as announced by P.M. Harper.
I support M.P. Andrew
Kanìa's efforts to convince the
Harper Conservatives to adopt
additional measures to aid in
Canada's stalled economic
recovery.

Conservative ideology should not trump reason and good government. Despite the
overwhelming opposition by experts and all levels of government, the Conservatives have
ignored pleas to reverse their decision to eliminate the long form census. This has crippled
Canada’s information gathering system on which all areas of the public service rely heavily
for informed planning to meet the ever changing needs of the Canadian public.
This has led to the resignation of Mumir Sheikh, the head of Statistics Canada, a world
renowned information gathering and analyzing institution.
Canada already has one of the lowest corporate tax rates in the western world.
The Conservatives want to borrow funds to implement an annual 6 billion dollar additional
corporate tax cut. This will simply add 6 billion dollars a year to our existing 60 billion
dollar deficit.
The Liberal Party would return Canada to sound fiscal management, by eliminating these
irresponsible corporate tax cuts going to the richest Canadians.
