Masonry has many charms, symbols and talismans. We

wear them with pride. They belongto our fraternity and they expressto others who we are and what werepresent. After all, the keystoneof the Arch can be no stronger thanthe fidelity of the Craft who sup-port the foundation.

One of these invisible talismansof our ancient craft is the GoldenRule. It is a discipline that some-times gets lost in our frenzied dayand age. The theme of the dayseems be indifferent as possible toany stranger that crosses our pathfor fear of being assaulted.

Was it any different in the timeof Confucius in whose philosophythe Golden Rule was a key thought?Or, in the time of Jesus, who putthe Golden Rule at the center ofhis Sermon on the Mount? Both ofthese men stated that the trueworth of a person could be mea-sured by his adherence to theGolden Rule. The keystone of be-havior, they believed, is how oneperson treats another.

Certainly, it would ease a lot oftensions, if we could see in thefaces of people the common bond offeeling we all share together. Ev-ery one hates, loves, worries and isanxious. The question is—whatwould we like to expect from oth-ers? And, what would others ex-pect from us? Mostly, I think, wewould like consideration and toknow that others care about us asmuch as we care about them.

The Golden Rule is not an easyout. It is how the strong and wiseface reality. It is the ideal andchallenge of every Mason. As some-one once said, “So many gods, somany creeds, so many paths thatwind and wind, while just the artof being kind is all that this worldneeds.”

And, don’t let any witches orghosts or spiders scare you on Hal-loween, which is the Eve of AllSaints Day. But, before that, re-member the feast of Yom Kippur orthe Day of Atonement, a good timeto wash away your sins.

I became Reporter editor 17 yearsago (holy cow!–seventeen years!–

it kind of took me back, when Irealized how long it has been,) com-munications then were much dif-ferent. It was standard to have theReporter deadline on the 1st Thurs-day of the month, as many broughttheir typed and handwritten ar-ticles to the Sahib office and placedthem in the Reporter inbox in theoffice when they attended theShriners Thursday Luncheon thefirst week of the month. Today, with the increased pressures onme to get the Reporter to the print-ers in a timely manner and the factthat all but one or two submissionsnow come to me via email, I needmore time each month to compile

our Reporter, so starting with theNovember issue, the deadline willnow be the 1st day of the month(some months this gives me anextra 6 days.) Most contributorsare very good about complying withour deadline, I know you all willcontinue prompt submissions, thank you all very much.

I draw your attention to page 10of this issue, please turn to it now!I encourage you all to tear thatpage out and carry it with you toSahib events. Periodically perusethe page, to remind yourself whatour new nobles look like, and usethis tool to help you to greet ournew nobles when you see them and“communicate” with them how gladwe are they are nobles of Sahib.

Potentate’sNotes

Nobles,

October, the tenth month of the year, is perhaps the busiest of themall. The Hillbilly Convention was held right here at Sahib. My trip tothe Greek Isles is happening as you are reading this, and so we beginagain with this month’s events and socials. We of course have ourBirthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance and we do have a lot of birthdaysand anniversaries this month.

We will also attend the Amara Potentate’s Ball in Palm Beach Gar-dens, while the Venice Sun Fiesta Parade is going on. We have theMariners’ Commodore’s Ball the following week, and the followingFriday will be Sahib’s Masquerade Ball and I am hoping for a wonder-ful turnout from our nobles and friends and their ladies. We will enjoydinner, the music of Bill Milner for dancing and singing, and will haveprizes for the most original costume, the funniest costume as well asthe scariest costume.

The exterior of Sahib is looking ship shape; you can be proud of ourShrine. The snowbirds are usually all back by this time of year andwere missed during the summer months. Welcome back to you all; youadd so much to our social life. Let’s all enjoy our wonderful life inparadise.

While we are enjoying all our activities, thank the volunteers for allthey do every day for us. And remember, Sahib is where friends be-come brothers.

Yours in the Faith,

Tom Millaway, Potentate

The busy season will soon be here for Sahib Shrinersto enjoy! Look at this issue of our Reporter, and

you will see what I mean. The summer has been slow, but that is not unusual.

On October 11 will be our outstanding BirthdayAnniversary Dance. This is a premier event with greatmusic for dancing. The meal is always excellent. Comeand visit with some of your old friends. This month it ishosted by North Port Shrine Club. The theme is FallFest with music by the famous Bill Milner orchestra.Bring your lady, have a cocktail, dine, enjoy themusic, have fun!! You may even win a bottle of wineor a certificate to dine in our Sahib restaurant.

We hope many of you will be able to attend the SunFiesta parade in Venice on October 15.This is a majorparade for Sahib and is always well attended. Come, even if you cannot walk. We have many units and

clubs that will have room for you on their respectivetrailers. So come and enjoy the camaraderie.

We also will be hosting a costume ball on Fridaynight October 28.This is a special event this year. OurIllustrious Potentate and Lady Kaye will be here infull costume; another great event for you to come andbe part of, wear a costume of your choice.

We now are fortunate to have “Duane Dee” in ourlounge every Friday night for you to enjoy. Duane iswell known throughout the United States and we arefortunate to have him for most of the month of Octo-ber. He is an outstanding entertainer during andafter a fine dinner. We’ve seen the lounge fill up againwhich is great to see.

The above are only a bird’s eye view of the manyactivities that Sahib Shriners and guests can enjoy.Check your Reporter for other events.

As I write this, we have just returned from theEnglewood Pioneer Days Parade. It was a beau-

tiful day, the streets were lined with crowds of chil-dren and adults and everybody was having a goodtime. We were riding in the newly decorated golf cartwith Ill. Sir Tom Millaway. Ahead of us was ourParade Marshal Ron Enger, who walked the wholeparade along with Cub Dickerson and Frank Methenywho were carrying the Sahib banner. We were wellrepresented by many units and clubs. We receivedmany comments from the spectators, thanking us forthe work our Shriners Hospitals for Children do.

October’s activities are many and varied. ThePotentate will be on a cruise to the Grecian Isles.

Upon his return, the fun really begins. There is theBirthday Anniversary Dinner Dance on Tuesday Oc-tober 11, Stated Meeting on Thursday the 20th, andAmara Potentate’s Ball on Saturday the 15th. Thefollowing Saturday is the Commodore’s Ball.

The Scottish Rite is having a reunion October 22and 29. There is always Tuesday Bingo, which coulduse some extra workers and a night of fun at Mondaynight Bar Bingo. Looking for something to do? Comeon down to the Shrine where there is always somesort of activity.

Membership continues to be a concern, as we canalways use new blood. There are Master Masons out

Due to modern technology, the pictures of ourModel-T Unit at the SESA Motor Corps event held

August 10 to August 13 have already been sent to GarySchweinshaupt, the editor of Sahib Shriner’s Reporter, and were incorporated in the September issue.

We had a great time at the SESA, working andsightseeing. Our Model-T Unit spent four hours Thurs-day morning (8:00 a.m. to noon) being inspected andcompeting in various events, however it was worth itsince they brought home two 1st place trophies andmissed overall by .55%.

The meetings, I was a representative, were heldon Friday morning and were two to three hours longas scheduled for myself and the officers of the units.

However, we still got to visit a very nice restau-rant in downtown “Louvul” (one spelling) and visitthe Louisville Slugger museum. In addition, on ourway home Saturday some of us visited ChurchillDowns and browsed an all “peach” store in Georgia.

Friday evening was the SESA Motor Corps ban-quet and trophy evening. We all enjoyed ourselvesand as I stated in my September article brought homethe “bacon.”

Your Model-T Unit works very hard to obtainmaximum benefit from formations and competitionto benefit Sahib Shriners and themselves.

The Model-T’s presented one 1st place trophy plusa FASMC trophy to our Potentate Tom Millaway atour Stated Meeting on September 8, and the other 1stplace trophy to Jack Collins, Jr., Vice President of theSarasota Kennel Club will be presented on Thursday,October 6. Mr. Collins has allowed the Model-T Unitto use the parking lot for practice for many years andthis is a token of their appreciation. This has beencleared with Potentate Ill. Sir Tom Millaway.

Mr. Collins will be our guest for lunch and aspeaker on Thursday October 6, and will be presented

In July, patients from Shriners Hospitals for Children® had the unique opportunity to attend a summer camp for children with special needs at Rotary's Camp Floridain Brandon (called Camp Care-a-Lot.) Girls and boys ages 8 to 10 with orthopaedic conditions spent the week sleeping in cabins and enjoying an action-packed, fun-filled week. Campers enjoyed many activities, including swimming, archery, art & crafts, games, fishing and more. As always, our Sahib clowns were there.

Riley is standing tall

Riley Armstrong undergoes therapyat Shriners Hospitals for Children –

Tampa after undergoing spinal fusionsurgery to correct a 115-degree curva-ture of the spine.

Thirteen-year-old Riley Arm-strong, of Belize, is standing tallthanks to Shriners Hospitals forChildren – Tampa surgeon AnthonyP. Moreno, M.D., and pediatricianKarena Neri, M.D. In August, Dr.Moreno performed spinal fusion sur-gery on Riley to correct the 115-degree curvature of his spine.

“Riley had a severe neuromuscu-lar scoliosis which limited his abil-ity to function on a daily basis," saidDr. Moreno. "We were able to cor-rect the scoliosis from 115 to 40degrees, and so far he has been with-out complications. I am very grate-ful to be involved in his care andthank all members of the Shriners' team."Dr. Moreno performed the eight hourprocedure at Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren – Tampa

Riley’s mother, Edith, had beensearching for years for medical treat-

ment to help her son. Due to the severenature of the curvature of her son’s spine, she was faced with the same answer timeand time again, “It’s out of our exper-

tise," or "I’m sorry, but there is nothingwe can do.” Riley and his family foundnew hope through Shriners Hospitals forChildren.

Dr. Neri, of Palm Harbor InternalMedicine & Pediatrics, met Riley and his

mother in 2009 during a mission trip toBelize through the Palm Harbor UnitedMethodist Church.

“When I first met Riley, I was im-pressed that he could walk with sucha severe case of scoliosis," said Dr.Neri. "His mother explained herfrustration and that she had beendisappointed so many times in try-ing to get care for her son. She toldme that she knew he wouldn't live afull or long life if he didn't get thecorrective surgery."

It took two years to arrange forall of the medical tests needed andto raise funds for the family's travelto the U.S. "It was well worth itwhen we saw the look on their faceswhen they stepped off the plane andrealized that it was really going tohappen," said Dr. Neri. "Riley andhis mother can't thank the doctors

and the hospital enough, and Riley willnow be able to live a life like other Belizianboys.”

Riley is now undergoing outpatientphysical and occupational therapies at

Motor Corps Shrine Clubby Giles Light (G-man), Secretary, [email protected]

Back again, Varmit is out of town and his return isunknown. That means G-man is writing another

column for the Motor Corps. Unfortunately, withBiker Billy dinners for 2011 now history, we don’thave a lot to write about, but here goes.

The good news from the Motor Corps is the finalreport of our seven weeks of Bikerbilly Dinners.Sahib Treasurer Dale LaBell gave us a spreadsheetshowing net income to the temple totaled almost$4,200 for seven weeks. That’s about $600 per weekfor our seven weeks as we took over cooking andserving duties for the Hillbillies, who get a shortsummer break. A lot of work by the Motor Corpsmembers and their ladies made it a success. Even so,without our loyal customers, none of this would havebeen possible. So, until next year…

The Motor Corps likes to show off its stuff atparades. We did a nice job at the Ceremonial Paradeon Saturday, August 27. Thanks to all of those whoparticipated. We weren’t able to participate in thisyear’s Pioneer Days parade in Englewood. Last year’shot weather and slow moving parade caused too manyproblems for the air-cooled Harleys so we decided topass on this year’s parade. We are hoping, however, that the weather will be a little bit cooler for the SunFiesta Parade in Venice on October 15; in which casewe will participate.

The Motor Corps is currently planning its fallspaghetti dinner. Last month’s Reporter ad had itlisted as taking place on Sunday, October 23. We’vesince determined that date is not correct. The MotorCorps spaghetti dinner will be held on Sunday, No-vember 27 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. That is three daysafter Thanksgiving, so if you are tired of eatingturkey and dressing, this could be your chance toenjoy some great Italian food. Tickets will be $9 inadvance; $10 at the door. Our spaghetti dinnersinclude salad, rolls and wine and it’s all the spaghettiyou can eat. See any Motor Corps member for tickets.

Editor’s Note: Due to a conflict with the AnnualMemorial Service, the above spaghetti dinner wascanceled at the last minute.

We have a few birthdays and anniversaries toreport in October. Birthdays this month are: LadyTerri Pullman on the 1st, Lady Kim Harrell on the2nd, Lady Marcia McDonald on the 11th, Mick Vorbeck(Alley Cat) on the 13th, Lady Diana Mitchell on the16th and Lady Tracy Iversen (Skippy) on the 29th.We have two anniversaries in October: Lee Jones(Hacker) and Lady Katie on the 10th and HamptonCrimi (Sambo) and Lady Nicole on the 22nd.

Guess that’s all the news from the Motor Corps forOctober. Unless circumstances change, G-man willbe back in November. In the meantime, where isVarmit?

Everyone is invited to our October Mixer but at amystery location and date to be revealed “just in

time” by 1st VP Bob ‘Mixmaster’ Somerville by phon-ing (941) 429-6433. Some wag proposed a Halloweenparty, so start thinking about a costume for morehilarious or scary details (depending on who you are)on a possible “Trick or Treat.” Our monthly picnic atDallas White Park will feature an Octoberfest theme.Check with President Jack Watson (941) 240-5737 orNoble Sam Cohen (941) 377-0273 for the date andmenu.

And our Noble Bill Schultz and his ‘femme fatale’assistant Lady Kerry Van Fleet are still receivingrave reviews of their August musical comedy perfor-mance at the Daughters of the Nile appreciationluncheon for the Shriners Hospital for Children fund-raisers. See accompanying photos and Queen DianeNourse’s Nyla Temple No. 152 column elsewhere inthis issue.

Remember, each Tuesday 7:30 a.m., rain or shine,52 weeks of the year, we breakfast at the Olde WorldRestaurant in North Port for info, fun and fellowship. We invite any Mason or Shriner with their lady and/or friends to join us for some friendly banter, and civicprojects. Now we are gearing up for a busy and fun-filled autumn season.

At a recent breakfast, Bob Somerville related hisexperience of meeting up with a little boy walkingwith leg braces. When he approached the parentsabout his condition, they had never heard of ShrinersHospitals! The happy ending was when that theparents took their 3-year-old to the Tampa ShrinersHospital, the doctors concluded that their son did notrequire the braces. By running and playing, he wouldgradually outgrow his minor deformity!

Last month, our ‘snowducklings’ began paddlingback down from the Irene soaked ‘nor-east’. Theyhope to finally get warmed up and dried out whileavoiding another hurricane encounter. Breakfastguests included Noble Ed Cornell’s two delightfulgrandsons Devin and Derick Hunton. Ed reports thattheir older and wiser brother Dylan was still up northstudying his possible options of enlisting in the CoastGuard after he graduates from high school.

Congratulations to Gary Schroeder who identifiedour September Quotable Notable as James RooseveltJr.! This President of Tufts Associated Health PlansInc. wrote in a recent AARP magazine, “Let’s take atrue measure of where we are. Social Security has notonly been the most effective government program, ithas been the most responsible program. Social Secu-rity costs are funded out of its own dedicated revenue

The administrative costis .09 percent. It returns more than 99 cents tobeneficiaries on every dollar collected. I dare you tofind a private retirement plan that can claim that.”

So here’s our October Quotable Notable quiz -What nationally noted macroeconomist recentlywrote, “Decisions about the federal budget are funda-

mentally different from those of individual house-holds. It is more appropriate to liken governmentbudget deficits to prescription medicine. Just as medi-cation can be helpful to a sick patient, deficits can aida failing economy.”

We gather to socialize at 11:00 a.m., and havelunch at noon. Guests are welcome.

There are also many special events duringany given month, which are sure to bring pleasure toall. So, let’s get going and join our fellow nobles andladies for great food, drink, music and fellowship.

If any of Sahib’s nobles would like to join the“heavenly music makers”, just come to our rehearsalsand we will indoctrinate you. We have many instru-ments and not enough members to play them. You donot need to read notes, just have a desire to entertain.

Roadrunnersby Dick Schmidt, [email protected]

The Roadrunners are a Sahib Shrine working unitthat transports patients from our assigned area,

Manatee, Sarasota, Hardee and DeSoto County’s,primarily to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children inTampa. The three vans are the normal method oftransportation. There are occasions when other formsof transportation are necessary. Airfare, lodging andsubsistence have been provided for patients needingtreatment in other Shrine Hospitals around thecountry.

Additionally, there have been special cases re-quiring medical taxi runs to transport critical pa-tients to the Shriner’s Burns Hospital in Cincinnati,Ohio. Some situations require “out-of-the-box” think-ing such as providing mechanical repairs to a family’svehicle so that medical treatment could be providedwhen flight regulations made access not possible. Some patients choose to transport themselves to thehospital in their private vehicles.

The need for patient transportation to the TampaHospital is communicated from our Hospital Chair-man Jesus Cabalo to the Transportation ChairmanKen Clark. If special conditions exist or out-of-towntreatment is necessary, the hospital advises the Sahibhospital chairman who in turn works with the trans-portation chairman for method, funding and schedul-ing. Recently, two situations needed our full resources.

One was an out-of-the-area air transportation thatrequired a medical attendant all at a cost of $17,000and the other was four trips to Tampa by a medicaltaxi with a patient that was horizontally bound to agurney which cost $500 per trip.

The transportation chairman has developed anelectronic form, the Driver Assignment Form. Thisform has all of the logistics for the patient on theassigned trip. The primary driver receives this formby email usually 7 to 10 days before the trip date.Occasionally, because of hospital or patient schedulechanges the forms have been revised and sent lessthan 24 hours before the trip. The typical DriverAssignment Form includes trip date, appointmenttime, patient’s full name, responsible parties (par-ents or relatives), street address, city w/zip code, telephone numbers (land and cells), languages spo-ken/understood and notes (wheelchair van#2, carseat, youth seat, additional stops for MRI or specialclinic examinations).

Featured Drivers for October:Jack Lowe: from Dayton, Ohio, Blue Lodge

Well, we got through September. What a fullmonth. We started the month off with Pancake

Breakfast, then the Pioneer Parade on Labor Day.The next weekend, Lady Wendy and I got togetherwith our counter parts from the other Shrines inFlorida for a weekend getaway in Tampa. Did acouple dinners together, visited the Shriners Hospi-tal for Children and talked of future plans. The 18thgave us our fall picnic with many of our clubs pitchingin for a successful event. Then came the ImperialHillbilly Convention held right here at Sahib. Thiswas a great honor for Sahib to be selected to hold thisconvention. I can’t tell you the hours of planning thatour Hillbillies put into making things happen here.By the time you get this issue of the Reporter, theconvention is still going on, but will be ending Octo-ber 2. September 30 was the big day for my LadyWendy and me, as we tied the knot at the convention.A Hillbilly wedding, with bib jeans, shotguns andlet’s not forget the moonshine. I’m not sure how manyHillbilly weddings have been performed at Sahib, butthis one sure may go on in history. It may not be toolate to witness history!

With the convention over, I will now be shiftingmy attention to the East/West Shrine game. This isnot just another football game; this is Shriner’s chancefor great media exposure. The plan is to get as manyseats filled at Tropicana Field on January 21 aspossible. We want our members, friends, neighborsand any football fans to join us by attending thisgame. Sahib is again having the annual trip to thegame with all the fun as before for the all-inclusivecost of $75. Ill. Sir Tom Millaway had welcoming remarks. Hecommented on how successful the Ceremonial wasand complimented the director and the cast. He statedhis counterpart from Araba Shriners Jim Wood wasvery impressed with the entire weekend. He hadnever seen the Arch ceremony as we perform.

Banquet Manager was absent.Editor Gary Schweinshaupt stated that we were

down by $800 in Reporter ads. He stated we need ads.Break out session was next on the agenda.Unit council Director Fred Phillips stated the

Unit Council strongly stressed the importance ofadvertising of not only events at Sahib, but also therental of the Sahib Auditorium.

He said that Money Mania tickets would be sold andturned in by the end of the year. The units againdiscussed how they could raise money. Only the ModelT’s attended the Southeast Shrine Convention andcompeted this year. The council feels that part of thislow participation is partly due to lack of funds byindividuals. Money should be raised to compensatemembers that want to go to conventions, and compete. He recommended that a casino night is being plannedby the Unit Council in an effort to raise money.

Director of Clubs Sam Cohen also stated that theoutstanding Money Mania tickets would be in byyear-end. The Club Cuncil recommended that maybewaffles should be considered in an effort to attractmore customers at our monthly pancake breakfast. He also commented on the importance of advertising.

Marshal Ron Enger reported that the next paradewas held on September 5 in Englewood.

Circus Chair Ken Shipley reported that the Circuscommittee had found a reasonable place to hold nextyear’s circus. It is located east of I-75 on FruitvilleRoad. He is working diligently at this time to makethe 2012 circus a success.

Bingo Chairman Past Potentate Don Vos was ab-sent.

Ill. Sir Tom Millaway asked the nobility to pleasesupport our temple and be more generous with dona-tions. We need them to maintain a healthy cash flowposition.

He talked at length about the current landscapingetc. activities that will need funding.

This meeting adjourned at 11:00 a.m.

This year’s Ceremonial began with a CandidateSocial on Tuesday, August 23. This activity pro-

vides an opportunity for our new nobles to learnabout our units and clubs by talking with representa-tives of these groups. And what a fantastic turnoutwe had from all the units and clubs. The Motor Corpsbrought in one of the White Harley Davidson Shrinebikes, the Model T‘s had one of their little cars, theOriental Band had some of their musical instru-ments, and the Legion of Honor had some of theirparade arms. Costumes abounded as the Clownsshowed up in makeup, the Greeters were in theirorange shirts, and the Kentucky Colonels had theirpresident in his white suit and Kentucky tie. Bestestimate is that we had more than 50 nobles repre-senting their units and clubs at the candidate social.

At the risk of not having a complete list, a specialthanks to the following units:

Also, a special thanks to the following clubs:

This year’s candidate social wouldn’t have been sucha success without the support of all these units andclubs. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Eight-year-old Josalyn Kaldenberghas a new “bionic” arm thanks to

Moffitt Cancer Center surgeon G. Dou-glas Letson and Shriners Hospitals forChildren – Tampa. On Tuesday, April26, Letson performed the first expand-able total humerus replacement in theUnited States on Josalyn.

“This is a first-of-its-kind procedureusing a Stanmore expandableendoprosthesis in the United States withhuge results,” said Letson, head ofMoffitt’s Sarcoma Program who is a con-sulting staff member with Shriners Hos-pitals for Children – Tampa. “Josalyn isa piano player, and our biggest goal is tohave her back to playing the piano again.Kids are amazing, and I’m confident thatJosalyn will be playing again soon.”

Facing the prospect of having her rightarm amputated, Josalyn and her parents

found new hope through Shriners Hospi-tals for Children – Tampa and Moffitt.Josalyn, from Woodward, Iowa, was di-agnosed with osteosarcoma of her righthumerus in December 2010. She receivedoncology treatment in Iowa, but her op-tions were limited. Her parents were de-termined to keep her arm “We keptsearching for alternatives because weneeded to know we did everything wecould,” said Josalyn’s mother, Heidi.

Letson performed the nearly eight-hour procedure at Shriners Hospitals forChildren – Tampa. The collaboration ofShriners Hospitals for Children – Tampa, which provides expert pediatric ortho-paedic care for children regardless of afamilies’ ability to pay, and Moffitt’s Sar-coma Program enabled Josalyn to havethis groundbreaking limb salvage proce-dure.

Expandable Bone Implant saves girl’s arm“Bringing together the medical exper-

tise of both Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren – Tampa and Moffitt has changedthe life of this young girl,” said Dennis P.Grogan, M.D., Shriners Hospitals forChildren – Tampa chief of staff.

Josalyn lost some of the muscle in herright shoulder when Letson removed thetumor. She’s expected to experience weak-ness in the shoulder and elbow, but she’sthrilled to still have her arm. She willbegin aggressive physical therapy inabout two months and will eventuallyhave her prosthetic lengthened with mini-mally invasive surgery as she grows.

As I write this message, the staff at the House ofthe Temple is in the midst of preparations for the

2011 Biennial Session (and 210th anniversary of ourSupreme Council). I have just finished my allocutionand have a little time to ponder upcoming events. Ina few weeks the Supreme Council will elect new 33°Inspectors General Honorary and witness the confer-ral of that solemn and impressive degree. I can stillremember my sense of pride and awe when I receivedthe 33° in 1993.

In my decades as a Mason, I have been privilegedto witness many (if not most) of the degrees thatMasonry has to offer. I can still remember my feelingswhen I reviewed my accomplishments in the 31°,Inspector Inquisitor, and how my heart sank when Ihad to answer the piercing question of the 14°, Per-fect Elu. I have had other profound moments ofinitiatory experience, but perhaps the most meaning-ful occurred early in my Masonic career—when Ibecame an Entered Apprentice.

Some twenty-five years ago Rev. Robert L. Fulghamwrote a deceptively simple little book, All I Really

Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. His lessonswere uncomplicated and yet profound. Here are a fewof my favorites:

Play fair.Put things back where you found them.Clean up your own mess.Live a balanced life—learn some and think someand draw and paint and sing and dance and playand work every day some.

If we each would remember and practice those lessonswe learned in kindergarten, think what our lives andour world could be like, and these are only part of Rev.Fulgham’s knowledge from his first days in school.

And what would our fraternity be like if we re-turned to the basic lessons of an Entered Apprentice, those first instructions on which we were to build ourfuture moral and Masonic edifices? Here are a fewthat have stuck in my mind since lo those many yearsago when I first knocked on the door of a lodge:

Questions on Religion and Freemasonry

Can a Christian take the vows or obligations of aMason?Yes, with the exception of a very few denominations. Ifa Christian belongs to a denomination which forbids allvows, such as the Oath of Office of the President of theUnited States or the common oath of the law courts. “Isolemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, andnothing but the truth, so help me God,” then he prob-ably could not take the obligation. Any Christian whosedenomination does not forbid the Presidential or thethe court oath, or the oath taken when entering theArmed Forces could take the Masonic obligations. Someanti-Masonic writers have complained about the so-called “penalties” in the Masonic obligations. Thosepenalties are purely symbolic and refer to the pain, despair and horror which any honest man should feel atthe thought that he had violated his sworn word.

Is a Masonic service a worship service? No! Except, perhaps, in the sense that, for a Christian, every act is an act of worship. Our meetings open andclose with prayer. Masons are encouraged to rememberthat God sees and knows everything we do, and theBible is always open during a Masonic meeting. But, it

is not a worship service in the sense that a churchservice is

And that brings up one of the most ridiculous chargessometimes made against us—-that our members are“really” worshiping a demon, only they don’t know it!But you cannot worship something without knowing it.The act of worship is an act of full concentration.Knowledge, and devotion” with all thy heart and withall my soul and with all thy mind.” We honor andvenerate God, not the Adversary. What greater honor could a person have thanbeing able to provide his friend or brother with

the opportunity of joining an organization whichgives him a philosophy for living, directs unselfishlabor to assist others, in-creases interest in ourcommunities and fellow-men, as well as promot-ing friendship. As if thiswas not enough it alsoamplifies and furtherexplains the lessons ob-tained in the first threedegrees of Masonry. Suchis our Scottish Rite.

In asking many if theyhave obtained a newmember many reply with,“I don’t know anyone,” or “I can’t do that” or “I don’tknow what to say.” When I hear these comments, I am

reminded of the ladder of success as pictured here.If you want your Scottish Rite to grow and prosper

and to assist our fellow men to become better mem-bers of our communities, then it is necessary that we

all contribute to its suc-cess.

On October 22 and 29,the Tampa Scottish Ritewill hold its 276th Re-union, which is beingdedicated to Ill. VernonClark, 33° Degree. It isnot too late to get thosepetitions in.

No man should ever enter uponany great or important undertak-ing without first invoking theblessing of Deity. An Entered Apprentice puts histrust in God.It is the internal and not theexternal qualifications thatshould recommend a man to be aMason.Every Entered Apprentice hasstood at least once as a just andupright man and received instruc-tions on which to build his futuremoral and Masonic edifice.

And when each one of us stood in ourlodges as just and upright men and Ma-sons, it was in the northeast corner wherewe represented a spiritual cornerstone. Some of us had more rough and superflu-ous parts that needed breaking off thanothers, but if we absorbed any of thosefirst lessons of Masonry, we then began ajourney of self-improvement, fitting our-selves as living stones for that house notmade with hands, eternal in the heavens.

Bro. Stephen Dafoe summed up mythoughts nicely with the title of his 2004book: Everything I Needed to Know aboutFreemasonry I Learned as an Apprentice.I think he’s onto something! There is acertain powerful simplicity to the cer-emonies of the Entered Apprentice De-gree that has a deep effect on candidates. There is no pretense and no fancy para-phernalia. Just simple, heartfelt lessonsas friends teach one of their number tojoin them as a brother.

At the 2007 Leadership Conferences,I gave each attendee a small pin in theshape of an Entered Apprentice’s apronon which was one simple phrase: NeverForget. If we each would remember andpractice those lessons we learned in theFirst Degree, think what our lives andour fraternity could be like.

I’m very proud of my 33° ring, but themore I think about it, the more I thinkmy 14° ring represents all I really need toknow about the Scottish Rite. And I amvery certain that all I need to know aboutMasonry I learned as an Apprentice.

We have had our first session after our summerbreak. It is great to see everyone refreshed from asummer rest. Our trip to Palm Beach Gardens for theSupreme Queen’s visit and Florida Days activitieswas a great time. It is always great to meet with otherprincesses and reigning Florida queens. Come join us and discover a fun group to marchwith.

We are looking forward to welcoming new Ladiesof the Household this month. Perhaps some of youwould like to join us when the Supreme Queen paysus a visit in January. Specialized care saves young boy’s life

In April 2009, 6-month-old GavinBennett came down with a low grade

fever that soon escalated. It was discov-ered that Gavin had contractedpurpura fulminans, a rare bloodand tissue disorder sometimescaused by an infection in the blood-stream.

Gavin was rushed to the near-est hospital in rural South Da-kota. Doctors told Gavin’s mother,Echo, that her son would need tobe air-lifted to a major trauma facil-ity in Sioux Falls. There, Gavinspent three days on life support.

Once he stabilized, he wastaken to Children’s Mercy Hospi-tal in Kansas City, Mo. Doctorsfound that the infection in Gavin’sbloodstream had compromised cir-culation to his extremities, and they rec-ommended amputations to his fingersand legs. But Echo was determined toexplore other options.

“I kept telling myself there has to besomeone else who knows how to dealwith this disease,” said Echo.

The medical team at Children’s Mercyresearched other options and told Echothat Gavin’s best shot would be Shriners

Hospitals for Children – Cincinnati. “Iknew if Shriners Hospitals for Childrencouldn’t help my son, no one could,” said

Echo.During the eight weeks he spent

at Shriners Hospitals for Children®— Cincinnati, Gavin showed every-one how tough one little boy couldbe. He walked away from the hospi-tal without amputations or neuro-logical damge.

Today, he is an energetic 2-year-old who loves to jump on trampo-lines, run around, and talk toeveryone.

“Without Shriners Hospitals forChildren, I know Gavin’s outcomewould not have been this success-ful.”
