Will youtake hungerpersonally?

In round numbers there are 7 billion people in theworld. Thus, with an estimated 925 million hungrypeople in the world, 13.1 percent, or almost 1 in 7people are hungry. Every day, almost 16,000children die from hunger-related causes–that’s onechild every five seconds. Hunger and malnutritionare still the number one risks to health worldwide.

But even in the United States, a land of plenty, for 49million Americans, hunger is a daily reality. At leastone in six Americans, including one in four children, don’t have enough food. Many families are forced tochoose between buying food or paying their mortgageeach month.

So what can you do about all of this? Why shouldyou even care? Well, hungry people are made in theimage of God. Because He cares about their welfare,we are to care about it as well.

Pray that God will help you see others as He seesthem and for boldness to reach beyond your comfortzone to someone in need.

Give money to the World Hunger Offering thismonth. Special offering envelopes are available at thechurch house or just write “for world hunger” on yourcheck.

Why give to the WHF over other charities?Only the Southern Baptist World Hunger Fund uses100% of all contributions to feed hungry people.Personnel are already in place; thus, administrativeand promotional costs are borne out of other budgets.World Hunger offerings are disbursed 80 percent tothe International Mission Board for hunger overseasand 20 percent to the North American Mission Boardfor domestic hunger unless otherwise specified.

When Southern Baptists give food, they are there forthe long haul, desiring to plant churches and makedisciples for Jesus Christ. Our desire is to buildrelationships with people and eventually lead them toa relationship with Christ. The Good News ofsalvation through Christ is always foundational.Whenever possible, the plan of salvation is shared andan opportunity to respond is given.

In emergency situations, food aid must be given. Butwhen possible, hunger ministries are designed tocreate independence from rather than dependence onfood aid.

In 2010, the WHF ministered globally to 1,530,574people through 390 projects. 1,175,698 peoplereceived food. 186,136 people were provided waterfor drinking or sanitation, and 17,666 receivedlivestock or agricultural assistance. 6,788 sets ofcooking utensils were distributed after naturaldisasters. 135,233 people heard the Gospel. 12,143of them made a profession of faith, and 907 Biblestudies/story groups/churches were started.

Also in 2010, WHF through the North AmericanMission Board’s hunger relief ministries workedthrough 93,000 volunteers to serve 5 million meals tothe hungry in the United States and Canada, at a costof about 30 cents per meal. 10,782 new hungerministry volunteers were trained in evangelism with33,548 professions of faith and 4,201 baptismsreported.

Bring canned and packaged food for local hungerneeds. Collection boxes will be located at variousplaces in the church house. Any food items withexpired dates will be discarded. Half of the food willbe taken to the Dooly County Family and Children’sServices and half to the Houston BaptistAssociation’s food ministry.
