As part of our emphasis on encouraging reading and improving all-round levels of literacy, the school has recently bought an on-line Accelerated Reading Programme. The programme is currently being used with all of Year 7 and with a few students in Year 8 who need additional reading support. Each student is tested for their reading level and then encouraged to read from a choice of books from the library which are appropriate to their level. When they finish a book, they undergo another on-line assessment which tests their understanding of the book they have read, including their literacy level. If they score a sufficiently high mark on the test then they are directed to a more challenging book to read next. If they do not quite reach the required level in the test then they are directed to another book, at the same level. By doing this we are encouraging students to read more, to read more challenging material and to use reading as a key aspect of developing all-round literacy. We hope you can support your child in this and share an interest with them in what they are reading.

In order to support this important development, Gina Pellet, Librarian, will be involved in supporting the programme through resourcing the Learning Resources Centre with the appropriate books, which will mean quite an expansion of the stock in the library and she will be engaged in a number of activities which will encourage reading

and promote the Accelerated Reading Programme. In addition we have just appointed a new teacher to the school, Sally Willow, who is taking on the role of Literacy Progress Teacher. This is a new post aimed at developing the literacy levels of those students who need particular support, particularly in their first years at the school. Sally will be working with small groups of students over the year, focusing on getting them to the right level of literacy. She will also be in charge of the Accelerated Reading Programme. Sally takes up her post at the beginning of November.

PC Kate Brookman, our school Police Liaison Officer, who has worked for the school for many years, supporting our PSHE programme, has recently set up a Facebook page. This is a countywide police initiative, the purpose of which is to pass on information and address local issues. It is open to students and parents to use and is there to improve communication between the police and the community and to provide you with answers to questions you might wish to direct to her.She would be very pleased if any of you would like to add her as a friend to your account.

Well Done WillingdonA huge thank you for another successful sponsored walk. Please collect your donations and hand to your tutor by Monday 31st October

By Scott GardnerI walked with Gilly Binks and Hayley Cook,

Sarah drove the mini bus up the hill.On the walk I could smell grass and felt sheep wool. I had a rest with Oriana, Corrina, Gilly and Hayley. I ate marmite sandwiches and drank lots of water. I walked all day back to school 4 miles. Joe and Will walked with us after lunch. At checkpoint 5 Mrs Farrant ticked my sheet. I walked on the grass down the hill to the road. I passed the primary school and Sarah Miller my old teacher met me. I said “Scott fantastic walking!” When I got back to secondary school, tired, shoes off, socks off, feet very itchy.

Year 11Football

East Sussex B League Cup Winners

Congratulations to the Year 11 Willingdon boys football team for winning the East Sussex U15 B League Cup final. The team progressed through to the final during the 2010/2011 season but the game was postponed due to poor pitch conditions. It was agreed by both schools and the competition organiser that the final would be played at the start of the 2011/2012 as an opening game for both teams. The game was a tough encounter and the game was very close. Willingdon took an early lead in the first half but Hailsham equalised late in the second half. Willingdon scored two late goals to secure the victory and win the final 3-1.

This first term has seen the successful implementation of a new electronic rewards system. After discussing the previous rewards system with the student council it was felt that a new system was required that could be tracked electronically and one which rewarded more students across all subjects within the school.

So far there have been over 7000 rewards issued to students across the school. Varying points are awarded for differing rewards, for example good effort in lesson equals 5 reward points, whilst excellent effort in lesson equals 15 points. It is hoped that the new rewards system can install a competitive edge to all students’ attainment, behaviour

and attitude within school. Students will

be informed of both their own individual points total and the average points per student within their tutor group. This will hopefully encourage inter tutor group competition. For example students can earn reward points for everyone in the tutor group if they ensure their school planner is signed every Monday.

Certificates and letters home will be issued as part of the new system, whilst there will be prizes awarded at the end of terms two, four and six. More details of these will be announced shortly, once the number and type of rewards issued from term one are evaluated.

You as parents and carers, have your child’s best interests at heart, we know that. As a parent of teenagers myself, and with a responsibility for your child’s wellbeing whilst they belong to Willingdon Community School, I will be writing a regular Wellbeing column in Contact. The importance of sleep to children and teenagersQ. How much sleep should our children have? A. Young people aged 12 – 16 years need 8 – 9 hours sleep per nightWith 24/7 access to Facebook, Blackberry Messenger and X Box live, even though our children may go off to their bedrooms at an acceptable time, it is becoming increasingly difficult to motivate our children to get their heads down on their pillows to sleep.Sleep needs remain just as vital to health and well-being for teenagers, as it is for younger children. Top tips on sleep • Help your child to follow a consistent sleep routine. This will help them get to sleep more easily at night• If your child wakes up at the same time every morning (even if they don’t have school that day) it will help your child get to sleep at the same time every night.• Avoid your child going on the internet, playing video games and watching television immediately before they go to bed, and find other ways to relax. Playing ‘Call of Duty’ at 11pm is not preparation for sleep.• Reading a book, taking a relaxing bath or writing a diary are all ways to wind down and ease your child into sleep. A milky drink such as hot chocolate or Horlicks helps.• Try to schedule your child’s homework for earlier in the evening, so it doesn't cut into their sleep routine.

If your child needs to be up at 7am, then ideally they should be in bed by 11pm. If your child doesn’t have enough sleep they may:• fall asleep in class • struggle to concentrate • forget important information • seem impatient • look stressed • show stress related behaviours • may get sick more frequently • look tiredToday I spoke to a parent who had contacted BT and had internet access removed from 11pm to 7 am …it can be done!!!

ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICINESIf your child requires medication to be taken during the school day, please ensure that a Parental Consent Form is completed and given to Student Support along with a supply of medication. This is a legal requirement. We are not able to administer medication to a child without the completed form. It is not permissible for a child to carry their own medication in school. If a child has been prescribed a course of anti-biotics that require administering 4 times daily then we are happy to do this during the school day. However, if the dose is 3 times daily then please give the 2nd dose when your child arrives home from school. Please note that medication given by school staff is administered in a completely voluntary capacity, and that you as parent/carers retain the legal responsibility for administering medicines in respect of your child, at all times.

As the nights draw in, and the weather gets colder, this serves as a useful reminder of the email “alert” facility available from the County Council, enabling parents/carers who, by registering their email address, receive an automatic email sent to them informing them if their child’s school is closed, as soon as the County Council receive notification from the school itself, of the emergency closure. This email states why the school is closed and can also provide further details for parents/carers, such as when the school would be expected to re-open etc. To register your email address for this facility you should log on to the County Council website via www.eastsussex.gov.uk/educationandlearning/schools then click on “find local schools”, then type in Willingdon Community School, selecting “secondary” as the school type, then click on the school name (underlined), which will link you

to a range of details regarding the school including the option to “subscribe by email to closures for Willingdon Community School”. Click on this link, and enter your preferred email address details and, by clicking on the “subscribe” button you should then get an email which asks you to complete the subscription service. Once this final task is done you should immediately get an automatic receipt stating that you have subscribed to the service. From then on, you will be contacted by an email alert, should there be an unplanned closure of the school. This option is available for all East Sussex primary and secondary schools, so if you have children at other schools, this email alert system can be set up for those schools as well, just by typing in the name of that school via the route shown above.

On-line payments for school meals with ParentPay!This is just a reminder that parents/carers can now pay for items from the school meals service, on behalf of our students, on line via “ParentPay”. The letters, containing the password and activation code in respect of each student, were issued a while back, however this information can be requested again either via Reception, if needed, or the request can also be emailed to [email protected] well as the benefits that this offers parents/carers, this online facility further reduces the requirement for students to carry money into school and the need for them to load money at the “revaluation” units, located within school.

Other news from the Dining HallDon’t forget, as well as the ParentPay on line facility, the existing cashless system that is operated in the Dining Hall also offers our parents/carers the opportunity to see what food and drink items are being purchased by their child, in case you were wondering where all the money goes! You can also request a daily limit to be placed on their account, which might help spread those purchases over the school week if that is an issue for you! These reports/limits relating to your child can be requested in writing, through the Cook Supervisor, Caroline Breach, here at the school.
