GRANT RECIPIENT: Each year the Camp Lake James Endowment awards grants to organizations within the Lake James region. This year the Camp Lake James endowment is proud to support the Western Piedmont Community College’s (WPCC) outdoor learning project.

WPCC has created a Nature Trail andOutdoor Learning Center in Morganton for young children with storytelling, outdoor musical instruments and a fairy house. Their vision is to stimulate children’s minds through an outdoor learning center and hands on learning.

The grant helped fund the addition of a discovery log, music area, storytelling chair, fairy house and interactive trail signs.

WPCC is doing wonderful things for the community and we are excited to see how their program grows. WPCC is open to the public so stop by and see nature come to life.

Nature Notes: Snag; More than just a dead tree If a tree is dead then it should be cut down, right? The answer to that question is not always yes. Just because dying trees are leaf-less does not mean that they are life-less. A dead tree that is left upright to decompose naturally is called a snag. These dead trees are actually full of life and play a vital role in providing habitat to many types of wildlife.

SNAGS PROVIDE• A Place to Live – Stags can be a home for many animals including birds, squirrels and raccoons.• A Food Source – Stags attract insects, mosses, lichens and fungi that make a great buffet for wildlife.• A “Crow’s Nest” – High, leaf-less branches provide excellent lookouts for birds of prey, searaching for a snack• A Hiding Place – Squirrels put stags to good use by storing food in the many nooks and crannies of the deadwood.

Keeping stags in your yard can create a refuge for hundreds of woodland creatures. A tree that falls and is lying on the ground is also prime real estate for all sorts of native wildlife.
