DYNAMIC AND EXPERIENCED INDUSTRYFor more than 20 years, South Australian firms have been winning and delivering the nation’s most complex and dynamic defence projects.
South Australia is proudly pro-defence, and that is why a number of top global companies have set up their regional headquarters &/or significant operations here including: ASC, Australian Aerospace, Babcock, BAE Systems Australia, Cobham Aviation Services Australia, General Dynamics Land Systems Australia, Lockheed Martin Australia, Raytheon Australia, SAAB Systems and Ultra Electronics Australia.
Plus South Australia has a strong core of SME actively delivering specialist services and products to the Australian Defence Force and other Defence customers around the world. South Australia leads the way in key areas, including:
■■ project management
■■ systems integration
■■ electronic warfare
■■ naval shipbuilding and submarine support
■■ land force enhancement
■■ military vehicle manufacture
■■ infomation technology
■■ intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance
■■ defence research and development
There are also many non-specialist firms providing a diversified range of products and services to support defence (for example, structural steel, fasteners, cable, wheel rims) and services (management advice, catering, legal services).
HIGHLY SKILLED WORKFORCESouth Australia’s dynamic and experienced workforce is underpinned by a world-class education system and a supportive regional migration program.
The South Australian Government in partnership with defence industry and local education institutions continues to invest heavily in workforce development to deliver a pipeline of highly skilled workers to the state’s defence sector.
Major initiatives include:
■■ the industry-led Defence Industry Workforce Action Plan
■■ South Australia’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Skills Strategy
■■ the Advanced Technology Industry-School Pathways Program to encourage students into the defence sector
■■ a range of new undergraduate and postgraduate defence specific courses at South Australian universities
■■ the establishment of international satellites for the world-renowned Carnegie Mellon University, Cranfield University, Royal Institution of Australia and University College London
■■ establishment of a dedicated Maritime High School
■■ 75 annual defence related honours scholarships.
THREE WORLD-CLASS DEFENCE PRECINCTSThree distinct defence precincts have been developed to provide collaboration and networking opportunities. These precincts are linked by modern rail and road transport systems, and a high-speed broadband optical fibre backbone.
