Sowing Seeds of Opportunity
In…Chi Chapter,
Alpha Alpha State, and
DKG International
by Lois Brown
Our February speakers will share “The
Many Layers of Delta Kappa Gamma
Membership” with us. A Chi Chapter
membership opens up the worlds of Alpha
Alpha State and International. There are
opportunities for personal growth and
leadership, attending seminars and
conventions, earning Act 48 credits,
socializing, fundraising, and helping your
community. Also, scholarship monies are
available for further education, enrichment
grants are awarded for travel, and distinctive
women are honored.
Marcia Trach will tell us about her
Woman of Distinction award. Dr. Barb
Andrews and Dr. Marj Paradise will talk
about their state and international
scholarships in pursuing their doctoral
degrees. These members will discuss their
chapter, state, and international involvement
inside DKG and how they took advantage of
the opportunities to grow within and outside
our organization.

FEBRUARY, 2013 VOL. #7, ISSUE #3
It is winter in Lancaster. The days are shorter and nights are longer. Barren tree
branches stretch toward the sky as brown grass covers the ground. Even in this bleak
landscape, there is hope and there is promise. Winter is also the time of year when
snow replenishes the ground water and dormant bulbs or seeds are gathering nutrients
from the soil. My father was a wholesale florist so I lived on a “plant farm” with many
greenhouses. At this time of year my father sowed seeds, took cuttings and nurtured
the bulbs of tulips, daffodils, and iris.
One of my favorite memories is of a visit to the greenhouse on my way home from
teaching when there was at least a foot of snow on the ground. As soon as I opened the
greenhouse door, I could smell the growing plants and blooming flowers. The
tantalizing scent brought a smile to my face and made me think of spring. Then my
eyes saw the most beautiful red, pink and purple tulips along with yellow daffodils and
pink iris. I told my father I truly understood why he loved what he did because he was
able to enjoy the smells and sights of spring even while surrounded by snow. Chi
sisters, where do you see yourself this winter? Are you feeling like a bulb and needing
to rest and refresh your spirit? Or are you feeling like a beautiful flower blooming in
the midst of winter as you grow professionally and personally? Either way, I hope you
join us for our meeting in February. As we come together in fellowship, the winter sky
brightens and our souls are nourished.

There are many things happening in Chi Chapter, in Alpha Alpha State and
DKG International. Please think about attending Alpha Alpha State Convention in
June. Our chapter is 65 years old and will be part of the birthday celebrations. The
birthday celebrations will happen on Friday evening and on Saturday at the
luncheon. We need you to help with ideas for a skit, attire and some dance moves
to share at convention. Also, we need to take a basket of goodies to convention to
put in the raffle. We need you to help develop a theme, collect items and put the
basket together. Supplies for early career educators will be collected at the Friday
evening meeting at convention. We need you to put these supplies on your
shopping list. Start thinking and let me know your ideas on how you can help with
any of the above.
March 2nd is a special event sponsored by our Ways and Means Committee. A
brunch and shopping in downtown Lancaster is something to brighten our day and
provide Chi with some needed funds. Look for details in the newsletter and plan to
share the day with some friends. Space is limited so get your ticket early.
You are invited to join us for an orientation for potential members in March.
Details will be given at the February meeting. Share your experience and help
strengthen our society as we introduce Delta Kappa Gamma to our guests.
You will find the reservation for our February meeting on the last
page of the newsletter. Please print it out and get your reservation to
Kathy Kuzmiak on time.

Born in Myerstown, PA in 1918, Sara Beamesderfer Shea was the daughter of the late
Rev. Cornwell and Sallie Ebling Beamesderfer, and the wife of the late Earl L. Shea.
Sara was a 1939 graduate of the Reading Hospital School of Nursing and then went on
to receive two degrees in Education: a BS from Millersville University in 1956, followed by a
Master's from Temple University in 1961. She spent her professional career in education and
nursing, and eventually served as the coordinator of the Lancaster County Practical Nursing
Program until her retirement in 1977. She served on the State Board of Nursing Examiners
and was still a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Chi Lancaster Chapter. Sara served as a
Lieutenant in the United States Navy Nurse Corp during the 1940s. She was a licensed pilot
and together with her late husband, they flew their own plane frequently back and forth
between Lancaster and Maryland. She was an active member of the Zion United Methodist
Church in Myerstown, an avid dog lover and gardener, and a strong believer in supporting
good causes.
Sara Shea remembered Chi Chapter in her will. We received $400 to use toward a
Grant-in-Aid for a high school graduate pursuing a degree in education. As she remembered
us, may we all remember her as the giving humanitarian that she was.
