Hello and welcome to the Autumn edition of the

WN4 Local Link.

What a great time of year this is, fresh, crisp mornings and dark cosy nights. I love all the changes a new season brings

and I have even managed to get through September without lighting the fi re. I am however now cranking up that thermostat!

Autumn for me is all about cooking cosy suppers for family andfriends, trying out the new seasons fashion and adding a few candles and cashmere throws here and there to ensure I stay warm.

With Christmas around the corner (10 weeks, not that I am counting)we are trying to keep you ahead of the game by advertising whats coming up over the next month or so. Halloween and bonfi re activities, Christmas markets and other more local activities to name but a few.

With a growing portfolio of great local businesses and services right on your doorstep, be sure to keep your copy handy, as you never know when it will be needed.

If you have a local Christmas event that you would like to feature, then please get in touch before 19th November.

New York…The City that never sleeps!Fancy a fun packed City break in the Big Apple; why not try NYC in the fall when ice skating rinks are a plenty.

With fl ights leaving daily from Manchester Airport direct to JFK you could be there tomorrow! Be sure to plan ahead as there is so much to do (and that doesn’t include shopping and eating!). The best way to ensure you capture every area of New York is on the tour buses. There is an uptown tour and a downtown tour. The tour guides are fun and very factual and you learn more about the City than you would ever imagine possible. Their night tours take you across the Brooklyn Bridge where the view back over Manhattan is breath taking (www.graylinenewyork.com).

Tribeca is a fantastic place to fi nd street markets, one off shops and quirky cafés offering more than just burger and fries and where you can do some serious people watching. Or why not try 5th Avenue for some serious glitzy shopping and the famous Macy’s store!

The best way to get around is on foot so be sure to take some comfy shoes! The subway is a quick & easy way to get from Uptown to downtown and can be found on most Avenue corners. The famous yellow cabs come in masses and will weave you in and out the New York Streets.

When you are ready to rest your feet after a busy day in the City why not relax with a cocktail sat at the bar in Del Posto, classy, welcoming. (www.delposto.com). Or why not try something a little more rustic at the Ward III bar in Tribeca (www.ward3tribeca.com)

Fancy staying in style then why not try the famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel located within walking distance of Times Square & Central Park (www.waldorfnewyork.com).

Always Ashton is the strap line adopted recently by the hundreds of independent traders in Ashton.

Always Ashton will be the two words that the group hope will inspire the public into keeping our delightful town afl oat and encourage new shoppers to come into the town.

The group initially intend to hold fortnightly meetings, which will be open to all the traders in Ashton, moving to monthly meetings once things are up and running. Traders will be getting together to think of different events and incentives to bring people back to the town, time and time again.

Free parking every day for over 100 cars on the market on Garswood Street with further spaces at other sites around the town is obviously the town’s biggest draw, as most towns now charge for parking and the group feel this is a massive advantage into getting new shoppers into the town.

Another advantage of the town is that it boasts such a varied collection of trades, almost everything you need is available and all within a short walk of the bus stop, or the free car parking.

Always Ashton, as far as the enthusiastic traders are concerned, is going to keep shoppers answering the question of where they choose to shop, “Always Ashton”.

If you are a trader in Ashton and are interested in getting involved, then please contact RichardAylett on 01942 272 978 or 07779 281 478.

Always Ashton now has a face book page just simply search “Always Ashton”.

Modelling is equal parts excitement and exhaustion mixed with determina-tion and spiced with glamour. Don’t be fooled by the lacquered looks and the air kisses. It is one tough gig.Try strutting to castings down cobbled streets to wolf whistles whilst trying to balance a book and fl at shoes, then appear carefree and composed. Modelling at a high level requires determination and many sacrifi ces.

In many regards it is a game and you have tolearn how to play, in order to survive, or better still succeed. Ultimately you have to make decisions about how much of yourself you are prepared to give. Some girls are fortunate and get a few lucky breaks and make it big. Others have to do the hard yards.

Yep, travel is fun, but it is sometimes tainted by long absences from friends and family. You need to be a strong, independent character that is happy in your own company. Try being dropped off at a hotel in Japan at 10pm and not being able to speak, or read Japanese and fi nd food that you identify as edible. Talk about a culture shock. It makes for a steep learning curve; clambering

up the ladder in four inch stilettos ain’t simple.

Don’t be disheartened there are many fabulous parts to this fascinating industry. The personalities you encounter are captivating and often inspiring. You will also learn so much about yourself and grow as a person.

The industry is notoriously erratic and can be fi ckle in its decision making process, expect scrutiny. Prepare foryour hair to be cut, died, coloured, pulled, teased, extended and highlighted. Your body will be looked at closely, your skin inspected and your personality analysed. You start to feel like an object, measured, photographed, in some cases weighed and commented on as though you were not present. You have to numb this laboratory specimen experience and smile through the negatives.

However it can be an exciting journey of self-discovery, but expect tears, tiredness and tantrums. The images the industry presents does not necessarily paint the true picture. It is extremely exciting and there are so many landmarks.

First agency, fi rst casting, fi rst job, fi rst show...

hen we visited Bailey’s nursery school I was overcome with so many different feelings. The thought of my baby suddenly growing up and becoming a big boy overwhelmed me.

Then they told me that he would need a uniform. Well all that emotion went out of the window and I was in my element planning a shopping trip.

So, me and my little man hit the shops for what promised to be a memorable experience. His excitement matched mine, at fi rst, but three shops later the bribing had already started and he still needed to get his feet measured! I thought everyone enjoyed shopping - maybe he is sickening for something. Next stop was the barbers for a quick haircut - when he spun round in the chair and revealed his new grown-up look I had to swallow back a sob.

Nursery morning arrived and we were up and

dressed early. Getting out of PJs before 8am is rare in our house and only acceptable when there is the promise of a fl ight to somewhere exotic. So, yes, the atmosphere was a little tense and my smiles where getting more and more fi xed. Lunch box packed, photos taken and we were on our way. My outfi t had been carefully chosen ages ago as I had heard about the school-gate fashionistas and wasn’t going to let the side down.

Hanging his coat on his own little peg and seeing his shy excitement at seeing his teacher and fellow classmates was a moment that nothing can prepare you for. I never thought that so many tears would be shed before 9am (and all of them mine).

As I got back in the car I gazed at Poppy still in her sleep suit with porridge in her hair and a huge smile on her face. We drove home in silence, got spruced up and set off to do what we girls do best, shopping of course...
