Volunteers don't get paid, not
because they're worthless, but
because they're priceless.
- Sherry Anderson
Hello! This is your D28N Lieutenant Governor Christopher Bui, and I just wanted to tell you that Fall Rally is right around the corner. It is time to show our Phoenix spirit and show CNH what we got. Make sure to continue the amazing service you have been doing. Get working on those PB&J sandwiches! Have a fiery month, Phoenixes.
-Christopher Bui

Would You Like Tzatziki with
that? “Spanning three days at the Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, the Greek food
festival was recently held on the 27th, 28th and 29th of September. With varying cuisines
served such as gyro (yee-ro), grilled pita bread with slices of meat dubbed as gyro meat,
topped off tomatoes and onions, and finally, slathered with Tzatziki (Zah-ZEEK-KEE) sauce
(sour cream and onion). Said gyro was also served with ‘Greek’ Fries (potato fries with lemon
and spices). Not only was there food, there was also the entertainment, which included,
dancing, singing, and yelling out traditional Greek word such as “OPA!” (Ope-Ah). Church
tours were also given and visitors were led in shown the wonderful murals that the church
had to offer. Also a couple of lucky winners came home with some of the following prizes
from the raffle: a 2014 Mercedes Benz of their choice, an iPad, and many more prizes!
Benjamin Stevens, 10th, said “My experiences at the festival were awesome and super epic. I
was wrapping the gyros at the gyro stand and it was awesome. The best part was the free
food!” All in all volunteering at the festival not only got you free food, but you got the
experience to make the food, experience the culture, and meet Grecian immigrants who will
tell you amazing stories. Sound like fun? If it does, Key Club hopes to catch you working at
one of the gyros or even Tzatziki Stand!

Cancer Walk One thing for this month that East Tech did was the Cancer Walk, which
many members attended to help a cause. There were many people there
that also attended this wonderful foundation. Many supporters from East
Tech were there wearing their pink outfits and glammed up! This is what we
did for this month so far, and there will be more events in the future!
-Maria Keang (East Tech)
Jumpstart Read for the Record
On October 3, 2013, our members participated in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record event at Aliante
Library. Jumpstart is a program that promotes early childhood education. Read for the Record is a
worldwide event where people across the nation unite to read the children’s book Otis by Loeren Long
in honor of the Jumpstart program. Our Key Clubbers volunteered by reading out loud to the kids,
helping them out in fun activities, and making friends along the way. Reflecting on his experience at
JRFTR, Ranon Pador said, “It was a great experience to work with such young children! Getting to
become their friend was one thing, but to contribute to a youthful society in need of a stronger
education, I was glad to be a part of it. The event started off with our members (along with Key
Clubbers from other schools) reading to the children in small, individualized groups. Parents sat on the
sidelines with grins on their faces as they watched their kids have fun while learning. Aedrian Aquino felt
that, “At Jumpstart, it made happy to see the kids and their parents happy.” After reading Otis, the
children went off into farm themed activity groups that involved creating murals, drawing friendship
pictures, and singing along to “Old McDonald Had a Farm”. When asked about his favorite activity,
Paulo Felarca exclaimed, “I loved when I got to draw the barn murals with the kids!” The festivities
ended with a bang, as all the volunteers and kids took part in a fun parade around the library!
-Anya Batara (Legacy)
The Day of Service and Remembrance was a special event to commemorate
9/11. There were a lot of people there and it was a really nice atmosphere. We
said the pledge of allegiance and then after a couple more ceremonial things
happened, we started the volunteer work, which was handing out fire safety
pamphlets to the local residents. It was a very nice thing to do. Everyone should be
prepared for a fire. It was a lot of fun handing out fliers. More people should go
next time!
-Nick Gutierrez (Rancho)
Service and Remembrance 9/11
Helping out at the Greek Food Festival was an interesting experience. The smell of
food and culture was everywhere. Looking around, all your eyes see is “Greek.” What
I did was help cook the food. No, I don’t quite remember what that food was, but it
smelled and looked delicious. It was kind of hot, but that was okay! Looking at all the
happy people and talking to them was medicine enough. There were a lot of
volunteers besides people from our club, so I encourage every Rancho Key Clubber
to go next year!

Region 5 RTC 2013 “This weekend was one of the best weekends I’ve had so far, filled with memories. I hope
you guys felt the same way. A-Tech members were all so spirited throughout the day.
Everyone could hear us chanting the "A-WHAT" cheer so loud. RTC is an event that I
believe everyone in high school should go to at least once. Hope everyone had fun
yesterday!”
-Johnny Yang (Atech)
Like Boom! We’re Gonna
Rock This House!
Hold up wait a minute! We still have more spirit in it!” said nobody ever after they poured every last ounce of their
spirit into the Regional Training Conference held at Centennial High School. This differed from the past years’ RTC’s,
usually held at Cimarron Memorial High School. The start of the event was filled with spirit as the clubs, starting with
Liberty, crossed from the school dirt lot into the Centennial’s front doors. As the schools filed into the gym, there
were enormous clubs such as Clark High School’s, while some were not as large, but were still as powerful such as
Coral Academy’s Key Club. For Group 2, the day started off with presentations on how to run for positions, with
current officers taking the stage and sharing their experiences. The next presentation was on what it means to be
members of the Kiwanis Family and our roles in it. Honey-baked ham catered the lunches this year in form of
sandwiches. (There were multiple other variants such as ham, turkey, and vegetarian, too.) Finally, one of the
highlights of the day was the Spirit Rally, featuring notables such as Liberty, cheering to their red white and blue,
East Tech cheering to their titans, and the Advanced Technologies Academy pouring their hearts out (which I can
say from a personal experience) to their cheer “Fire It Up.” Although many of teams did not make it (including A-
Tech), I can say from personal experience that I learned what it was to be part of a real Key Club Ohana, a true
family. The last highlight of the day was dancing till there was no more spirit in it, and playing Ride That Pony
(started, yet again, by A-Tech and Clark), bonding, energizing, and intermingling with other schools’ Key Clubs. I
want to congratulate all teams that won their respective spirit sticks, and next year, the Mavericks will truly be
“Blazing, ignited and can’t be beat!”
-Anutr Sivakoses (Atech)
Winning RTC East Career and Technical has been one of the schools that work
hard to keep key club going great. For this month, RTC was a big
accomplish for them. They practiced many days in their cheer and
it was a struggle because of certain difficulties. Everyone doubted
on their win for the spirit cheers. Out of nowhere, they won! You
can see the surprise in their faces each time they were called up.
They won Division 28 North, Best Spirit, and Region 5 stick! It was a
big accomplishment.
-Maria Keang (East Tech)
Rams Got Spirit
WOW! That's all I can conjure up after experiencing key club's RTC. Something about
a group of people from different high schools packed into an all-day event was
amazing. I thought I would get annoyed by the fact people would be so loud all day
ran though my head. But after the first hour I didn't want to stop myself from cheering
with my school. I only regret giving myself a headache. PFFFH who am I kidding I
don't even regret that! RTC is something I wish I can partake in every year of my life.
And if I can go back in time, I would do it without the slightest hesitation.
-Andrew Chau (Rancho)
October DCM
Still reminiscing about our memories at RTC, members from our Key Club attended
the October DCM and shared their experiences with each other and what they
learned from the many workshops RTC had to offer. We also learned of a new
division-wide service competition in which we are trying to have each person in our
clubs make as many Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches as they can and donate
them to their local charity of choice. Lastly, we had some fun learning our new cheer
for our division in order to get ready for Fall Rally!

Fall Rally South is the great gathering of Key Club members from all
across our CNH District of California-Nevada-Hawaii. Since it’s at Six
Flags: Magic Mountain, you know it’s going to be big! After the
colossal Spirit Rally in the Golden Bear Theater, you spend the rest of
your day exploring the huge park with your friends. On the day-of,
we’ll be meeting at Western High School at 2am. There, we meet
with the rest of Division 28 North and receive the shirts, supplies, and
spirit gear before boarding the buses. Show your phoenix pride!

How are we helping?
Maternal and neonatal
tetanus (MNT) is
devastating, killing women
and babies in the poorest
countries of the world. But
we can rock the world with
hope. Key Club members are
teaming up with the entire
Kiwanis family and UNICEF
to help save and protect
women and their future
babies around the world
with The Eliminate Project:
Kiwanis eliminating
maternal and neonatal
tetanus.
Through The Eliminate
Project, the Kiwanis family
will change the world. MNT
affects many, many mothers
and babies in the poorest
countries of the world, and
it's going to take the help of
many, many people to
eliminate it from the world.
With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and
UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and
neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of
nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number
of women each year. The effects of the disease are
excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful
convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.
To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100
million mothers and their future babies must be
immunized. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe
storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and
more. It will take US$110 million — and the dedicated
work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis
family.
Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine
deficiency disorders, achieving one of the most
significant public health successes of the 20th century.
Now, they are eliminating MNT from the face of the
Earth. And in doing so, the project will reach the
poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with
additional lifesaving health care. The end of this one
disease means the beginning of better health for so
many families.
•Neonatal tetanus kills one baby every nine minutes—
nearly 60,000 newborns every year.
•To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100
million must be immunized to protect themselves and
their future newborns. This requires vaccines, syringes,
safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff
and more.
•It will take US$110 million—and the dedicated work of
UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family.
•Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine
deficiency disorders, achieving one of the most
significant public health successes of the 20th century.
Trick-or-Treat for Unicef:
Since 1994, Key Club has been Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF and over the years has raised nearly US$5 million for iodine deficiency programs worldwide and HIV and AIDS programs in Kenya and Swaziland. Now it’s helping The Eliminate Project.

Eliminate Week:
Become heroes for the cause. Help save or protect women and their future babies. Aktion Clubs, Builders Clubs, K-Kids clubs and Key Clubs have marked their calendars for Eliminate Week: May 5–9, 2014. Around the globe, Kiwanis-family clubs like yours are focusing on a week in May to raise funds and awareness for The Eliminate Project. Now's the time to start planning your week of fundraising fun!
