Summer is winding down and calendars show the favorite season of many of us is here: Football Season!

Whether you’re a fan of high school, collegiate or pro gridiron action, one thing is clear: good teams with high-caliber parts experience success. Recently, we have welcomed

some new members to our Capital of Dreams Team.

Anita Archie is Executive Assistant to the Mayor. She comes to us from the Business Council of Alabama and will have oversight of the Planning and Risk Management Departments, while also working with City Council, the City Clerk and special projects.

Mac McLeod is the City’s Director of Retail and Commercial Development. His tenure as president of the Colonial Group will be a huge asset as he cultivates retail opportunities across

the City, manages our design studio and works as a liaison to the Chamber on multiple issues.

Scott Miller has been promoted to Leisure Services Director. He’s a familiar face after spending many years in our Parks and Recreation Department.

The new Director of Parks and Recreation is Rob Spivery. His background includes sports administration and coaching positions at ASU, Montevallo and other places. One of his goals is to develop recreation programs to benefit at-risk youth.

Calvin Brown is the new City/County EMA Director. He comes to Montgomery from the University of Texas at Dallas after a long career in New Orleans. He was deputy director of their Office of Emergency Preparedness following Hurricane Katrina.

Barry Crabb is the City’s new Finance Director. He is a certified public accountant who comes to us after 25 years at Weil Brothers Cotton, where he was the Chief Financial Officer.

Two BlessingsTwo Blessings


Since its founding, Montgomery has

played an important role in many ways, which continues to this day. As the city grew and prospered, so did city services. Toward the end of the 19th century, several major public improvements were made, one of these being in public transportation.

The first trolley system was pulled

by mules on tracks which began at the foot of lower Commerce Street and went up Dexter Avenue to the Capitol. Joseph Gaboury, a Canadian, was the owner of the Capital City Street Railway Company. The mules were hard to deal with as they pulled the trolleys from point to point. Gaboury soon employed an electrician from Chicago by the name of Charles Van de Poele to solve the mule problem.

Van de Poele was known for being

a brilliant electrician and presented an ingenious idea to Gaboury. Within a year of being hired, Van de Poele installed electric motors in each of the trolley cars and the cars drew their power from overhead electrical wires. At last, the new system was ready to test. On April 15, 1886, the first electric trolley in the western hemisphere was put into motion. The Montgomery Advertiser described the maiden journey by writing, “Last night, a street car was seen coming up Commerce minus mules…It moved as easily and smoothly as a ghost in the clear moonlight, and at any speed desired.”

Perhaps the enthusiasm of the writer had

him overstate the speed of the trolley as “any speed

desired” as the top speed was six miles per hour, which was still faster than the mule drawn trolleys. Nonetheless, the speed of the trolley made it worthy enough to be given the name “The Lightning Route.”

The electric street car changed the city of

Montgomery. Soon after street cars became electric, trolley tracks began to expand throughout the main streets of downtown. Citizens who had lived in homes on streets which are now dominated by government buildings, hotels, and other businesses, moved out of “town” as the electric street car allowed for expansion. One of the first places to see expansion was Montgomery’s first suburbs, Graham’s Woods,

better known as Cloverdale, and the trolley soon followed. Not long after, the trolley ran to other suburbs such as Capitol Heights and Highland Park, which were all eventually annexed by the city of Montgomery. The trolley also ran to Oak Park and other entertainment areas.

The success of the electric trolley lasted

exactly 50 years. The system stopped running on April 15, 1936, being replaced by buses. Today, there is little left of the trolley system. If you look closely at the intersections of Dexter, Commerce, Court, and Montgomery streets, original trolley tracks were excavated and left open during part of downtown revitalization.

SelfiSh or Self-Care?“There’s only one corner of the universe you can

Many times women come to me for counseling unable to articulate what exactly brought them to counseling. I begin with asking them to describe their world. I hear daunting schedules of marriage, work, children, taking care of aging parents, church activities, PTA meetings, children’s sports and extracurricular activities, caring for the pets, managing the household, being a nurse, a maid, the family accountant, teacher, etc. The problem quickly becomes clear: lack of self-care.

WAIT! Where is YOUR moment? How often are you caring for yourself? The replies I get to these questions normally equate self-care with being a selfish mom or spouse.

Every time I fly, the flight attendants remind me to put my oxygen mask on first before helping those around me. Most of us are caregivers in one way or another. If you are bankrupt physically, emotionally or spiritually, what is the quality of time and attention you are able to give?

Each of us has to reenergize, rejuvenate, replenish and refresh! It can be as simple as walking a couple of times a week or a nightly devotional time. Make sure to schedule YOU into your schedule. Keep yourself happy, healthy and safe first, then when you give of yourself, you are giving the best! Self-care is the best care…it’s YOUR choice!

Right now I’m not a big Halloween guy. First, because I’m a dentist and I have to write this article about candy and how it

causes tooth decay and how all people should not eat candy while I’m craving M&M’s. My dental hypocrisy runs deep. Second, it’s Halloween! A little candy is expected nowadays. But on Halloween there’s candy EVERYWHERE. Mountains of candy brimming over plastic pumpkins, overflowing countertops and kitchen tables. Kids with blue tongues doing backflips off walls with their little hands clutching airheads and gummy bears. Eating candy for breakfast. Eating candy for lunch and dinner. Not to mention the parent who keeps the mounds of candy for their child so they don’t have access to it, then picking out a few choice treats for themselves when their kids are asleep. You know who you are. It’s a dentist's nightmare. After all the little lectures we give to our patients year round about sugar and tooth decay, it’s the holiday that thumbs its nose at us. I take it personally.

But I’m getting older now. The fight in me is waning. You want your candy? Have at it. No finger wagging or soap box lectures from me. After all, it’s Halloween! It only comes once a year, man. Trick or treat. Lots of treats. Let your kids have them. But there are a few tricks for the treats that you can use to lower the chance of getting new cavities. Let your children have their candy. But let them eat more candy within a small amount of time. When your kids eat high amounts of sugar, the acid balance in their mouths becomes highly acidic. It’s the perfect environment for the bacteria that causes cavities to flourish. It takes about an hour for the acidity level to balance out again. So if it has to be, let your little Halloween vampire go crazy with his hard-earned bounty for a small window of time rather than giving him a small amount of candy steadily through the entire day. When the time is up, give him a tasty toothbrush and floss. The acidity level stays lower and there is a much shorter window for the bacteria that cause cavities to flourish. Saliva is the bathwater of your mouth. It helps to neutralize acid and washes away food debris that would otherwise cling to your teeth and cause a ruckus. Keeping your child’s saliva flowing during and after they indulge in their candy will help tremendously. Some ways to do this are to have your children eat their candy during mealtimes and to

give them some sugarless gum afterwards, preferably sweetened with Xylitol. Xylitol is a sugar substitute that has been proven to prevent cavities.

Halloween is a great holiday. Enjoy it and with these little tips, you can let your kids have their chewy fun. I hope you have a fantastic fall and a happy Halloween!

Sometimes we all need a little help. Getting assistance through a fitness instructor or personal trainer can make a huge difference in reaching your goals and staying motivated. You may not always like to hear what we have to say, but it is always in your best interest. Fitness instructors and personal trainers are there to help you, and to keep you motivated. Take advantage of it.

Do you need to change it up?

Are you stuck doing the same old routine? Has it become unchallenging, unmotivating and boring to work out? If yes, do something different! If you are doing the exact same exercises, the same weight, and the same intensity, then change it up.

Again, it may require professional help, but it's worth the investment. You can be wasting your time by being stuck in a rut. Make the time you have effective in the gym. Keep changing up your routine, and you will never get bored and always be challenged.

Staying motivated is not easy. If it was, we would always finish every challenge that we start. Taking a step forward, and occasionally taking a step back is normal. Just don’t let the step back be a downward trend. Learn from your success and your failures, and move forward. Don’t let small set backs unmotivate you. You are over halfway to the end of the year. If you are not on track to meet your goal, it is not too late to make the necessary adjustments. Think positive, stay on track, and surround yourself with people who want you succeed, and you will always stay motivated and reach your ultimate goals.

Life Lessons

We sometimes struggle when look back at decisions we’ve made. Was it the right decision? Often our decision can’t be labeled right or wrong, but the best decision, given the financial, emotional, social and physical resources available to us. The decision is always easy when right and wrong is crystal clear, or if the benefits outweigh the risks beyond doubt, ahhh. . . what a blessing! These are easy ones, even when we violate these things, we simply know what we did was right or wrong given the circumstances we were in, and we will accept and prepare for the consequences that follow the decision.

However, the decision gets very complicated when we know there are pros and cons regardless of the decision we make. For instance, deciding on a degree or career, whether to stay in a relationship, decisions regarding your children.

The good books are of no help to us now except to say, the calmer the mind the better the decision and pray on it. The books still do not tell us what is the right decision, because, no matter what, the pros and cons are of about equal weight. Argh! Now, we are in a conundrum. We do not know what’s right or wrong anymore.

If that is the situation, let there be peace in knowing, the decision is not necessarily right or wrong, but the best decision given the financial, emotional, social and physical resources available to us at that given time. Whatever pros and cons follow the best decision, we will deal with it with understanding, not judge whether the decision was right or wrong. We are doing the best we know how to do, given the resources at hand, at all times.

Kim Tomberlin has been at it for a long time - graduating from Huntingdon College in 1985 and going to work in retail management which eventually took her away from the River Region. After marriage, she returned home and decided to go into business for herself. She still uses the engraving machine she used when she first started - which remarkably, doesn't even require power! It does a fantastic job and relies on the steady hands and creative mind of its operator. And Kim has lots of satisfied customers - including us! JT loves the "Microphone Award" that we gave him a year or so back - it is beautiful, it's engraved, and is truly unique. Kim's talents have also garnered the attention of area jewelers - many of whom use her to string pearls, engrave jewelry and consult on their business plan and in-store selections.

AA few weeks ago, a very dear friend transitioned from time to eternity. In a moment she slipped away and left a void in the lives of all who knew her. The beautiful smile she flashed whenever she saw you was pure joy. The way she would tell you the absolute, unfiltered truth (whether you were ready for it or not) was refreshing – if sometimes quite painful! The sound of her belly laugh that she would try to stifle in the quietest moments was contagious. Regardless of how hard you tried to keep from cracking up, seeing Venicia honestly struggle not to laugh out loud was funnier than anything. Resistance was futile . . .

So when God called her from among us, as He often does His angels, it was hard to wrap my mind around the fact that she would never walk through the door again. She would never infect us again with her laughter in the natural.

Now that her transition has settled into a place where my spirit can accept it, I find myself asking God the question that often comes up when the unexpected, unexplained, unimaginable happens: WHAT’S THE LESSON?

Most people might say that death doesn’t carry a lesson. It just happens. We’ll all have to face it eventually, won’t we? That might be the lesson: be ready to go when it’s your time. But that doesn’t set right in my soul.

I don’t believe God intends for us to live our lives being preoccupied with death and dying. Instead, I believe the most important lesson that the passing of friends like Venicia and loved ones we hold so close to our hearts is much simpler and absolutely more uplifting.

Here’s the lesson: LIVE. That’s all. LIVE. Death will invariably affect all of us at some point. But just a sure as I’m writing this and you’re reading it, I believe the chief lesson of death is that we’re supposed to LIVE every moment until it’s time to go. I believe that as much as it hurts, God uses even death to remind us how important it is for us to LIVE.

Live honestly. Live wholly.

Live passionately. Live rightly.

Live truthfully. Live lovingly. Live joyfully.

Live meticulously. Live carefully.

Live fully. Live gratefully. Live selflessly.

Live gladly. Live realistically.

Live purposefully. Live abundantly.

Founded in 1995 in Cecil, Alabama, Macon East was birthed of Macon Academy upon the closing of its Tuskegee campus. The Knights have won 25 regional/area championships and 12 state championships. Most recently in girls’ athletics, MEA is the reigning back-to-back state champions in both volleyball and softball.

Kasey Hope is an Auburn University graduate and the owner of P'zazz Art Studio in Prattville, where she has been teaching art lessons to adults and children for 6 years.

This activity is easy for little ones but equally as fun for us grown ups too!

Supplies needed:Heavy paper ( bristol paper, watercolor paper, or heavy cardstock will work) WaterBlack acrylic paintYarn

1. Mix half water and half black paint in a small cup. Be sure to stir it around until you have a nice mixture of thin black paint.

2. Dip part of your yarn into the paint.

3. Pull the yarn out and then lay it on your paper. Pull the yarn up off your paper and look at the cool designs it made!

Continue to do this until your paper is filled with super cool designs! Then you can mount it on black paper to really make it pop!

BLOAT: The Second-Leading Cause of Death in Dogs

What Is Bloat? Bloat alters the normal process of

digestion. Consequently, the scientific community is still unsure of its actual cause. Normally, a dog’s stomach contains a small amount of gas, some mucus, and any food being digested. It undergoes a normal rhythm of contraction, which grinds food preparing it for further digestion. However, when bloat occurs, the gas and/or food cause the stomach to distend or stretch several times its normal size. This distention causes severe pain. For reasons we do not understand, this condition causes the stomach to twist. This twist ties off the blood supply and causes the gas inside the stomach to be trapped. The trapped air has nowhere to go and builds intense pressure. A dog with bloat will die in severe pain if emergency care is not received immediately.

What Breeds Are At Risk?More commonly, this condition

affects dog breeds that are considered deep chested. This means the length of their chest from backbone to sternum is long while the chest width is narrow. Examples of dog breeds more susceptible to bloat are Great Danes, Greyhounds, St. Bernard, German Shepherd, Weimaraner, Rottweiler, or Boxers. However, the condition can affect small breeds too. Unfortunately, I have treated breeds as small as the Pekingese and Poodle with this condition so… no breed is exempt. What is important for ANY pet owner to understand are the visible signs that your dog is in trouble.

Signs Of Bloat Unfortunately there isn’t one symptom

that designates a bloat diagnosis. However, some common signs often noted with the illness are:• Attempts to vomit (usually

unsuccessful) may occur every 5-30 minutes

• Significant anxiety or restlessness• Hunched up appearance• Bloated abdomen that may feel tight • Whining• Pacing• Shallow breathing• Drinking excessively• May refuse to lie down or sit up

If you feel your dog is acting differently from his/her normal behavior, it is advised that you keep a close watch and call your veterinarian if you feel any symptoms become alarming.

Can Bloat Be Prevented?There are simple routine changes

pet owners can make to reduce the possibility of bloat. For some pet owners, especially those owning high-risk breeds (Great Dane, St. Bernard, or Weimaraner) electing a procedure known as prophylactic gastropexy surgery may be a preventative option. In this procedure, a veterinarian will suture the stomach wall to the abdominal wall - gastropexy - and/or surgically open the pylorus to improve stomach flow - pyloroplasty.

Your veterinarian will determine the most appropriate technique or combination of techniques for your pet.

Dogs suffer from a variety of injuries and physical disorders that are considered life-threatening emergencies. However, bloat is one condition so drastic that its rapid consequences of delayed treatment will lead to death. Bloat, or gastric dilatation and volvulus, is considered the second-leading cause of death (second to cancer) in dogs, and every dog owner needs to be aware of the signs and conditions that lead to this fatal emergency.

For others, making the subtle changes listed below could help:

• Using a high-grade dog food. Consult your veterinarian for recommendations.

• Eating two or more meals per day instead of one large meal.

• Including a canned dog food in the diet.• If your dog is a rapid eater, discuss with

your veterinarian ways to slow eating down.

• Do not allow your dog to drink excessive amounts of water at one time.

• Avoid exercising your dog after a meal.

Although bloat normally affects larger breed dogs, any dog owner needs to be familiar with the signs associated with this illness. The only possible way to treat bloat is with a quick response. Knowing your veterinarian's procedures for emergencies and after-hours care could mean the difference between life or death for your pet.

We caught the three owners during the whirlwind buzz of preparation for 2013 Fall huetopia, an event they created, which has become a signature social event for the River Region.

"We have a huge variety to fit lots of body types and ages" says Edna Belle Steen, co-owner. Hue Studio was founded in Montgomery in 2006 by Edna Belle Steen, Heather Steen and Stephanie Brown. The three owners come from

diverse backgrounds; evidenced in the merchandise offered at Hue Studio. After six years in east Montgomery the crew made the collective decision to move the store to Cloverdale. "We adore our east-side clientele and are still visited by them regularly - but we have thoroughly enjoyed the visibility and neighborly atmosphere of this area." Edna said.

Stephanie Brown, the fashion and finance spark at hue studio, comments, "One of the obstacles we have conquered is price. When we started out in 2006 the economy was great and nobody had even thought about a recession. Our price points were a little high then and we had to work extra hard after the economy tanked to find a quality product for a lower price." Hue Studio now features brands like BB Dakota, Jack, Blu Pepper and several other labels for both the fashion and cost-conscious. Heather Steen, the artful and talented design and PR guru, jumped in to be sure to let us

Heather is already planning tomorrow’s windowfront as we visit. And she takes five calls from eb designers and media buyers. She lives in the future, so we pin her down for a few remarks:

“All I can say is it’s never going to remain in one place. When we quit growing and changing, we’re done. We’ll soon be adding (S)hue Studio with, you guessed it, shoes. We love shoes and so do our customers. Also look for our Web presence to grow significantly with an online storefront and continued communication with our base via social media.”

Big color is everywhere in fine fashion jewelry. A few years ago, most people were investing only in smaller, conservative rings with precious stones when building their jewelry collection. I find my customers more determined than ever in trying to distinguish their styles from that of the rest of the world and costume designers.

The desire to be different seems to inspire openness to new stone cutting styles, juxtaposition of metal colors, and exploration into many new gemstones and hues for design. The many colors of gulf coast water can be seen in green amethyst, chalcedony, and aquamarine.

There are new cuts and varieties of sapphire and ruby currently being used. These, along with metals like rose gold and black rhodium, create new looks for these classic stones. Sapphire and ruby are actually the same family of stone, with the only difference being different colors of the same crystal formation. The stones often look more natural, less polished, and less formal on their presentation.

At Cronier's Jewelry, we are able to take stones from existing pieces and redesign their presentation to look less cocktail or dressy if that is the goal. Also, sometimes the goal is to make something look vintage, and we can do that as well. I took my own personal colored stone ring and replaced the smaller sapphire with a larger smooth cut cabochon aquamarine and added a halo to bring an old piece of jewelry that I loved back to life.

Local Veteran to Receive the Gift of Sound

DeRamus Hearing Centers will be giving away a pair of top-quality digital hearing aids and many other prizes to one of our Alabama veterans. A panel of local citizens will read all submissions and choose the lucky winner, who will receive a free hearing evaluation, hearing aids ($4000 retail value), free hearing aid batteries for life, and free follow up visits for life.

Not only that, but a luxurious limousine, courtesy of Touch of Class Limousines, will carry the winner in style to a party in their honor, hosted by DeRamus Hearing and catered by Eastside Grille. After all this, the winner will be able to use the Gift of Sound to enjoy lively conversation with a friend or loved one at a free dinner for two, courtesy of Eastside Grille.

Alabamians are invited to submit a beloved veteran’s inspirational story. (Veterans are also invited to submit their own stories!) Entries should be 500 words or less and may be submitted at deramushearinginc.com/community.asp or by post to Attn: Veterans Day Giveaway, DeRamus Hearing Centers, 2809 Chestnut St., Montgomery, AL 36107.

All submissions must be received on or before October 25, 2013. The winner will be announced November 8, 2013. Employees of DeRamus Hearing, Touch of Class, and Eastside Grille are excluded from winning and from inclusion in the panel of judges.
