MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Horseman Ted Bassett says KET’s GED prep can put students in the winner’s circle

BET ON A WINNER

When you give someone a “leg up” in horse country, chances are you’re talking

about giving a jockey a boost up onto the back of a horse.

But when you talk to former Keeneland executive Ted Bassett — a World War II Marine veteran and head of Kentucky’s state police in the tumultuous 1960s — you discover that he has a passion for helping others get a leg up on life.

His personal call to leadership, he says, was fostered early as a student at Yale.

“At Yale, you were expected to make a difference. It was a part of the culture I was raised in,” said Bassett from his offices on the grounds of Keeneland Race Course, where he was president and chairman of the board and now serves as trustee emeritus.

“They expected you to step up and participate: academically, athletically, and extracurricularly,” said the kindly, self-effacing man who nonetheless is known for his tenacious dedication to the causes that he embraces.

His military background also fuels his dedication to public service.

“The code of honor and courage and integrity is so woven through the fabric of the Marine Corps. There was an expectation that you would step up.”

That code has guided Bassett through the years to support worthwhile causes such as the YMCA, the Kentucky Blood Center, and the Heart Association — as well as the Wounded Warrior Project, which assists former soldiers transitioning back to civilian life.

And it led him to KET, where his support goes beyond a financial contribution. He aims to spread the word abut KET’s education mission: he wants every citizen who lacks a high-school diploma to know about Fast Forward, KET’s online GED test preparation toolthat can help adults get back on track for college or career advancement.

Fifteen percent of Kentucky’s working-age adults do not have a high-school diploma, Bassett observes.

“Now that’s a frightening figure,” he said. “And KET has the resources to try and remediate that, to correct it.”

Bassett, who has passed his 90th birthday yet nonetheless remains active in civic affairs, points out that Kentucky’s shifting economy demands an educated workforce.

“The job market is extremely competitive, and it’s only going to get more competitive. You need to show on your résumé an ability to learn in order to enhance your skills. If we’re losing coal, losing tobacco, two of our most stable industries, where is the ability to create jobs to come from?”

he asked.“If a major corporation is looking

to relocate to Kentucky, one of the things they’re looking for is the availability of a skilled workforce — one that can adapt to high technological demands of producing competitive products.”

That’s where KET can come in and help the workforce meet that

challenge, he said.“Fast Forward really addresses

the problem, and there are so many positives with this tool for the person without a high-school education. You can take a two-week free trial. Getting that [GED credential] is a step up! It’s a step forward, and it builds confidence in a person,” he added.

“If a person gets their GED, statistics show that they can earn $9,000 more a year than someone who doesn’t,” Bassett said. “In addition to being a strong role model to their children to get their

education, I believe that in today’s highly competitive market, it’s going to be essential.”

ABOUT FAST FORWARD

The complete online GED prep course covers math, language arts, science, and social studies.

The program is designed to not only prepare learners through its educational content but also to familiarize them with the computer skills necessary to take the GED® test.

Learners can go online to KETfastforward.org to find out more or to get started right away.

“IF A MAJOR CORPORATION

IS LOOKING TO RELOCATE

TO KENTUCKY, ONE OF THE

THINGS THEY’RE LOOKING

FOR IS THE AVAILABILITY

OF A SKILLED WORKFORCE

— FAST FORWARD REALLY

ADDRESSES THE PROBLEM.”

KET Wednesday, Oct. 14 • 8/7 pmKET2 Saturday, Oct. 17 • 6/5 pm

Ironically, every dead elephant with its ivory intact is a reason to celebrate. It means it died of natural causes, not bullets, snares, or poison. Award-winning filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert start with the remains of two bull elephants and, through a series of key flashbacks, look at the lives they would have led, the dramas they may have seen, their great migrations for water with their families, and their encounters with lions and hyenas.

Secrets of the Dead: Vampire LegendKET Tuesday, Oct. 27 • 9/8 pm KET2 Thursday, Oct. 29 • 9/8 pm

Bram Stoker penned his gothic horror Dracula in 1887 and popularized the modern vampire myth — but evidence now points to those myths originating in England, not Eastern Europe. Unexplained burials, identified as deviant and cursed, were detailed in Stoker’s original notes; the cases hint at a deeply-held belief that the dead could rise and bring fear to the living — a belief that predates the Eastern European legend and is forcing a reexamination of the modern vampire lore.

The Legend of Sleepy HollowKET Saturday, Oct. 17 • 10:30/9:30 pm KET2 Sunday, Oct. 25 • 10:30/9:30 pmWritten in 1820 by author Washington Irving, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow has been called a classic of American literature and the great American ghost story. In this new short film, a storyteller uses most of Irving’s original language as actors bring the story to life. With spooky moments, quaint charm, and gentle humor, this new adaptation stays true to the spirit of the beloved tale.

War of the Worlds: American ExperienceKET Tuesday, Oct. 27 • 8/7 pm

On the night before Halloween in 1938, millions of Americans gathered around their radios and heard a news bulletin about strange explosions on Mars, followed by other reports that led them to believe an alien invasion was in progress. Relive the thrill of Orson Welles’ infamous radio dramatization of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, 77 years after it set off one of the biggest mass hysteria events in U.S. history.

Haunting TalesKET Sunday, Oct. 25 • 3/2 pm KET2 Wednesday, Oct. 28 • 8/7 pm

Huddle close to the fire and listen to five ghost stories by nationally known storytellers in this new KET produc-tion. Drawn from a variety of cultures and time periods, they include a traditional Hispanic legend about a griev-ing woman; “The Piper’s Cold Feet;” a chilling tale about a man’s struggle to defend himself against a witch; and “The Beaded Bag,” in which a man gives a young lady a ride in his buggy from New Albany, Ind., to Louisville — which turns into a ghostly experience.

Nova: Animal MummiesKET Wednesday, Oct. 28 • 9/8 pm

From baboons to bulls, crocodiles to cows, a vast menagerie of animal mummies lie buried in Egyptian catacombs. Hi-tech imaging is now revealing what’s inside the bundles and the strange role that animals played in ancient Egyptian beliefs. This program meets the scientists working in Egypt who are exploring the ancient underground catacombs where mummies were originally buried to reveal why the ancient Egyptians mummified millions and millions of animals.

Live from Lincoln Center: Danny Elfman’s Music from the Films of Tim BurtonKET Friday, October 30 • 9:30/8:30 pm

Composer and performer Elfman descends on Lincoln Center with a symphony orchestra and choir, led by con-ductor John Mauceri. This unique episode arrives just in time for Halloween and captures all the excitement of this cultural invasion, climaxing in performances of Elfman’s scores from films in collaboration with Burton such as Batman, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas, which features Elfman singing his iconic songs.

SHORT TAKES

Doug Flynn to host ‘Kentucky Life’Doug Flynn, a

former Major League Baseball player and Cincinnati Reds broad-caster, is the new host of Kentucky Life. He will step up to the plate when the series premieres its 21st sea-son in November.

“We’re happy to have Doug bringing his enthusiasm and love for Kentucky to the series,” said KET executive director Shae Hopkins. “He’s a natural storyteller that we think viewers will appreciate and enjoy.”

“As host, it will be an honor and privilege to carry on this rich tradition of sharing our state’s proud history, geographic diversity, and natural beauty with my fellow Kentuckians,” said Flynn.

Born and raised in Lexington, Flynn currently resides there with his wife, Olga. He is a banking officer with Central Bank & Trust and is involved with numerous civic and charitable organizations, includ-ing Hope for the Warriors and the American Association for the Prevention of Substance Abuse in Athletics.

Flynn follows Dave Shuffett, who retired earlier this year, and Bryon Crawford, who hosted the series when it premiered in the 1990s.

KET honored with ‘Institutional Ally’ AwardThe Prichard Committee Student Voice Team has honored KET

with its Institutional Ally Award, and Lynda Thomas, KET’s direc-tor of distance learning and professional development, received the group’s Adult Ally Award.

The Student Voice Team is a group of middle and high school stu-dents who work closely with the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence to provide student input on education policy.

We live in a world of rapid change, not the least of which is the transformation that’s taken place in our workforce over the last quarter century. From manufacturing to medicine, technology plays a critical role in the vast majority of careers today, and those who lack the necessary education and exper-tise to compete in today’s workplace are being left behind.

And while there have been noteworthy improvements in educational attainment, especially in the percentage of high school students who stay in school and graduate, our work as a nation is far from done. Today, nearly in 1 in 5 Americans lack a high school diploma. That’s 39 million individu-als with a significant, potentially insurmountable barrier to succeeding in today’s ever-advancing workforce.

Often those who drop out of high school do so for reasons beyond their control. Kellie Blair Hardt (see story pg. 27), who we profiled in the nationally broadcast KET series Dropping Back In, is a text-book example of this. Her story of perseverance and determination is truly inspiring.

It’s an honor to see respected community and business leaders like Ted Bassett (featured as this month’s Making a Difference) recognize the impor-tance of what we do. From early childhood resourc-es that help ensure our youngest citizens are well prepared from the first day they enter school through our innovative Fast Forward GED test-prep system, KET is committed to providing quality edu-cational products that help all Kentuckians suc-ceed in a complex, cutting-edge world.

‘Music Makes a City Now’ showcases Louisville OrchestraMusic Makes a City NOW, a new independent origi-

nal web series that explores present-day stories of musi-cal visionaries who build communities through great music and civic engagement, has launched its first sea-son on PBS.org and KET.org.

The web series was inspired by the award-winning documentary Music Makes a City: A Louisville Orchestra Story, which first aired on KET. It chronicles the historic rise of the Louisville Orchestra in the mid-twentieth century and was produced by Louisville filmmaker Owsley Brown III.

Music Makes a City NOW picks up the story in pres-ent-day Louisville and beyond, beginning with the arrival of a rising star, 27-year-old conductor and composer Teddy Abrams, as he moves to Louisville to become the youngest music director of a major American orchestra. Through a series of 12 short episodes, each five to seven minutes long, the series follow Abrams’ whirlwind debut season in 2014-15 with the orchestra, from his chaotic move-in day at his newly purchased downtown fixer-upper to the opening night of the symphony and his embrace of the city’s vibrant local music scene.

View the web series at video.ket.org/program/pbs-arts.
