This isn’t the first time Leeward Coast residents have requested this change. In 1940, Nanakuli residents and homesteaders successfully petitioned for their park to be named after the late Prince Kuhio. Today, residents again feel that returning the name of Nanakuli Beach Park to Kalanianaole Beach Park would honor and commemorate Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole and his lifetime of compassionate and committed civic service to the people of Hawaii. The resolution will next be heard at the City Council Meeting on November 4, 2015, where Resolution 15-289 will be up for final adoption at Honolulu Hale. Aloha!

At the request of the Nanakuli-Maili Neighborhood Board, I recently introduced Resolution 15-289, which will rename Nanakuli Beach Park to Kalanianaʻole Beach Park. With the strong support of the community, Resolution 15-289 was recommended for adoption in the Parks Committee today. Mahalo to members of the Nanakuli-Maili Neighborhood Board and the Waianae Neighborhood Board for submitting testimony, as well as members Richard Landford and Granny Grace who showed up to offer their voice. “I remember when it used to be Kalanianaole Park, and there was a beautiful sign displaying that name. This isn’t the first time Leeward Coast residents have requested this change. In 1940, Nanakuli residents and homesteaders successfully petitioned for their park to be named after the late Prince Kuhio. Today, residents again feel that returning the name of Nanakuli Beach

Park to Kalanianaole Beach Park would honor and commemorate Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole and his lifetime of compassionate and committed civic service to the people of Hawaii.

The resolution will next be heard at the City Council Meeting on November 4, 2015, where Resolution 15-289 will be up for final adoption at Honolulu Hale. Your testimony is greatly needed to document community support and will contribute to helping us reinstate the history and legacy of our park.

Legislative Update 10/07/15

Councilmember Pine and fellow councilmembers at the City Council meeting at Kapolei Hale earlier

this month.

Mahalo to those who showed up and offered their testimony at the recent City Council meeting at Kapolei Hale. Your support truly made an impact in passing these important legislative bills! Bills sponsored by Councilmember Pine: Bill 25: This bill was introduced in an effort to support and improve the Honolulu Zoo through providing sponsorship opportunities within the grounds and exhibits of the Zoo.

Bill 25 was adopted by the full City Council. Bill 65: The purpose of this bill is to adopt and implement on a local level the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.

Bill 65 unanimously passed second reading and will be heard at the Nov. 4 Council meeting. Bill 72: This bill is an ordinance relating to real property taxation. Bill 72 unanimously passed first reading and will be reviewed at tomorrow’s Oct. 21 Budget Committee meeting.

Update on Improving Roads at Sea Country, Maili

Updating you on Leeward Community Concerns Councilmember Pine recently met with Ed Lauer, General Manager of the Sea Country Community Association. Ed requested a meeting to discuss ways to improve pedestrian safety and to also address street parking concerns from the community. UPDATE: After meeting with Ed Lauer, Councilmember Pine sent in a Request for Investigation and Services Report to the Department of Transportation Services, in which they quickly responded. According to Director Michael D. Formby, the department will be conducting an investigation of the streets discussed, which will include research, site inspections, field assessments, traffic history and data analysis. The department will update Councilmember Pine’s office of their findings within the next 60 days.

Some of the ideas that Ed Lauer shared with Councilmember Pine include the following:

Mokila Street—Request to make

one side of the street “no parking.”

Pakeke Street—Request to make

it available for parking on both sides of the street.

Anaha Street—Request to make it

“no parking” along Makai side of the street.

Intersection of Kaukama Road and Pakeke Street—Request a

3-way stop and a crosswalk due to the large number of pedestrians who use this intersection on a daily basis.

Intersection of Pakeke Street and Huamoa Street—Request a

3-way stop and a crosswalk since this area is a main bus stop for school children.

Repainting of Sidewalks near Makaha Elementary School A Makaha resident recently reached out to Councilmember Pine’s office regarding the crosswalks, side of the sidewalks and roadway lines on Lahaina street. These streets are usually painted before the beginning of the school year. However, the constituent noticed that they had not been repainted yet, and subsequently was worried about the pedestrian safety near Makaha Elementary School. Councilmember Pine sent in a Request for Investigation and Services Report to reach the appropriate department that takes care of this road. Soon after, the Department of Facilities Maintenance responded, and a division of road maintenance crews were sent out to tend to the roads. The cross walks and sidewalks on Lahaina street are now repainted!
