President's Message

LADIES DO NOT MISS OUR SPECIAL EVENT! Yes, it’s that time of year. It’s our famous White

Elephant Auction and Pot Luck! This event, which is held only once a year, will be on October

21st. So, start searching for those treasures that you would like to donate to the auction and bring

them with you on the 21st.You will have plenty of time to visit with members, eat yummy food, and

bid on our world famous “treasures”.

As soon as the bidding closes, you may pick up the bidding slips for the items that indicate that

you are the highest bidder. This way, you can check out whenever you are ready.

Kudos to our hardworking ladies for our beautiful directory! Thank you Gail Berger, Sharon Tyler,

and Sara Woods! Well done! As new members join us, their photos and info will be published in

our newsletters, and you can add them to your directory to keep it current.

For those of you who celebrate Halloween, you might be interested in knowing that this event

actually dates back to Roman times to celebrate the festival of the dead. It has evolved over the

centuries to encompass many traditions. In the 16th century in Ireland, Scotland, and Wales,

people went house to house and sang or recited verses for food. As time went on, in France

some families visited the graves of their loved ones and prayed and left bowls of milk. In Italy

some left a large meal out for their deceased relatives, and in Spain special pastries were baked

known as the “bones of the holy”. The first reference to Halloween and costumes appeared in

North American in 1911. The earliest known use of the phrase “trick or treat” appeared in 1927 in

Canada. In the 1920s thousands of Halloween postcards were printed for people to purchase

and send to their friends. In the late 1930s children began to dress in costumes and go door to

door for “treats”. This custom is still popular today although some locations have begun to have

trunk-or-treat events (decorated vehicles assemble in a parking lot and treats are handed out).

Malls, museums, and various other entities have joined in the festivities by handing out candy or

toys. So, if you are planning on Halloween festivities, hopefully you will get treats and not tricks!

We sent a get well card to Karen Ehrbar who fell and fractured her knee cap. We also sent a

card to Deanna Loving continuing to encourage her. A card was sent to Nancy Malay wishing her

well.

NOTE: Sometimes a Get Well Soon card is not always appropriate. If you receive cards from

various charities that have a Thinking of You / Get Well tone to them and you are not going to

use them, please save them for me. I’d appreciate getting them very much. I plan to attend the

Member Autobiography

Michele Woodman

I was born in London, England and grew up in an old English Country pub my parents ran on the

river Thames near Windsor. At school it was discovered that I had an unusual soprano voice, and

that led to working professionally in Theater and entertainment after leaving at the age of 16. I

spent many years traveling all over the UK and England performing in shows, concerts, events

and, on cruises, TV, and Radio and meeting lots of “interesting” fellow artists along the way! In

the 80’s I ran a themed event company entertaining tourists in Windsor and London.

I met my husband Dan in a pub near Heathrow airport in 1984…he was returning to his home in

California from Africa with an overnight lay over and thought he’d have a quiet “pint "of beer. I was

there with friends doing a charity “Music Hall” show to raise funds for guide dogs for the blind…it

proved to be a very costly stopover for him…we were married in 1985 and lived in Surrey for 10

years where our daughter was born, and then Norfolk before moving to Denver for his job in 2008.

He continues to travel with work and for fun plays bass guitar in 3 bands.

I started teaching 15 years ago and an now established here as a vocal coach, but also return

twice a year to catch up with my students back in the old country! We still have a home on the

North Norfolk Coast .

I enjoy volunteering at PACE, singing in the Parker Chorale and have Parker Newcomers to thank

for getting to know some really wonderful ladies.
