Harvest Assembly

Parents are warmly invited to our Harvest

celebration on Friday 9th October, in church at

9.15am. Please could you send your child into

school with their Harvest gift on the day? Your

gift needs to be a dried or tinned product as

fresh foods perish too quickly. All donations We

look forward to seeing you there.

There is also a service for the Harvest festival

in church on Sunday 11th October at 10am

which your are invited along to the Autumn

celebrations. All donations will be distributed

amongst the elderly, vulnerable

and local charities for the hungry

and homeless.

Have you recently changes your mobile contract? Changed jobs? Changes home telephone provider? Moved? Please ensure you have updated the school with any changes to your contact details. Thank you.

Please remember that non emergency dentist appointments, opticians appointments, doctor appointments etc should be made out of school time. Every minute of every day counts

Please remember to ring school (0161 624 9885) each day before 9:30am with details of why your child is absent from school. If we do not hear from you the absence will be recorded as an unauthorised absence which could lead to a fixed penalty notice fine.

Term time absences A pupil’s absence during term time can seriously disrupt their continuity of learning. Not only do they miss the teaching provided on the days they are away, they are also less prepared for subsequent lessons on their return. There is a consequent risk of underachievement.

We ask that all Parents/Carers make all routine appointments (dentist, opticians etc.) outside of school time or in school holidays – non emergency appointments will be recorded as unauthorised absence. Any other medical appointments (specialist appointments, hospital appointments, emergency GP appointments etc.) if medical evidence (appointment letter) is submitted will be recorded as an M – Medical appointment on your child’s attendance record and does unfortunately adversely affect your child’s attendance figure .

Parents / carers do not have a right to take their child out of school during term time. As a result family holidays should be planned during the school holidays. As of September 2013 the School Governors agreed that, in line with new law, no leave taken in term time would be authorised unless for a medical reason for the individual child (i.e. an operation) where medical evidence must be provided. In accordance with the Local Authority Attendance Policy, school will class any absences that meet the criteria as unauthorised absences and will refer for a Fixed Penalty Notice fine. If your child will be absent for any reason that you know of in advance please put it in writing to the Governors - you will then be contacted with the decision as to whether the absence will be recorded as authorised or unauthorised.

Time to Talk In our assemblies each week we discuss

and take time to think about different

topics. These link with our Christian values. This

week we have been talking about : Love makes all

the difference Romans 5: 5. To understand that

when we really feel we are loved, we can be loving

towards others

Talk: how can we show others we care about

them?

With regard to punctuality, when children are persistently late, this can create gaps in their education and prevent them from reaching their full learning potential. It can also disrupt the classroom when lessons have already begun. Therefore, not only must a child attend school regularly, but they must not be late. If your child arrives at school on at least 10 occasions after the registration period and is recorded as late after registration, you may incur a Fixed Penalty Notice (fine). With regard to absence, 96.5% is the expected level of attendance that St Anne’s pupils should aim for. Persistent gaps in your child’s education can have a serious impact on their educational attainment. It is a parent’s legal responsibility to ensure the regular, full-time attendance of their children. Failing to do this could lead to legal proceedings from the LA and a Penalty Notice (fine) being issued. Parents do not have the legal right to take their child out of school on holiday during term time. Term-time holidays are no longer authorised and you will be issued a Penalty Notice by the Education Attendance Service and your child could lose their school place. Routine medical appointments such as routine opticians check up, dentist check ups etc. should not be taken during school time. Attendance recorded at 96.5% - Excellent. Attendance recorded at 95.1%-96.49% - Good Attendance recorded at 94.24-95.09% - Average Attendance recorded at 94.23% and below – Poor

93% attendance means that your child will have missed 2.66 weeks education a year!!!

Award Nomination We have been nominated for the Good Diabetes Care in Schools award that is run by Diabetes UK. This is indeed an honour to be nominated and goes to show what a fantastic job the team do that look after the diabetic care in school….and have done for a for some time now! As part of the award nomination we would like to invite all parents/carers to complete an online survey at www.surveymonkey.com/r/schoolnomination to support or oppose our application for the award (your child does not need to be diabetic for you to complete the online survey – all support will be greatly appreciated!)

An Update on Smoking Could we politely ask that Parents and Carers to not smoke in or at the entrance to the school yard? We are a completely non-smoking site. It is unsafe for our children if people smoke on site as they could easily be running around. Thank you for your understanding. If you would like support giving up smoking please visit http://www.nhs.uk/smokefree. Did you know that there will be a change in the law on smoking in cars and other vehicles with someone under the age of 18 from October this year? From 1st October 2015 it will be illegal to smoke in a car (or other vehicles) with anyone under the age of 18 present. The law is changing to protect children and young people from the dangers of second-hand smoke. Both the driver and the smoker could be fined £50. The law applies to every driver in England and Wales, including those aged 17 and those with a provisional driving licence. The law does not apply if the driver is 17 years old and is on their own in the car. Every time a child breathes in second-hand smoke, they breathe in thousands of chemicals. This puts them at risk of serious conditions including meningitis, cancer, bronchitis and pneumonia. It can also make asthma worse. The law applies to any private vehicle that is enclosed wholly or partly by a roof. It still applies if people have the windows or sunroof open, have the air conditioning on, or if they sit in the open doorway of the vehicle. The law won’t apply to a convertible car with the roof completely down.

Sports Premium Success!!! The boys’ football team got through to the play-offs for third place in the Parish Cup; narrowly missing out on the final due to golden goal. We had a fantastic debut from George S; the first time we have had a Y3 child playing on the main team.

Also, four children from Y2 and Y3 competed in an orienteering competition at Crompton Primary School. They came away winning. They were fantastic! We were the only school to complete six questions in the fastest time so not only were they fantastic sportspeople but brilliant mathematicians too!

PE Kit We are still having a number of children that do not have their PE kits in school. Please ensure your child has their

full PE kit in school EVERY week.

PE kits must consist of : Indoor P.E. Kit Red polo shirt, Black shorts/skirt, Black pumps – for health and safety reasons we cannot allow children to wear outdoor trainers Outdoor P.E. Kit Suitable outdoor trainers, Red polo shirt, Black shorts/skirt, Tracksuits can be worn in colder weather. Our P.E kit is put together with health and safety in mind first but is also part of our uniform and therefore children need their full PE kit in school everyday. Thank you for your continued support.

Attendance The Department for Education expects all students to achieve an attendance level of at least 95 percent in every school year and individual schools generally expect a much higher level. At St Anne’s we expect the level of attendance to be at least 96.5%. A child’s education can be adversely affected by poor attendance. At St Anne’s CE (Aided) Primary School we place great emphasis on good attendance as a positive step in helping children to (a) have full access to the curriculum and (b) achieve their potential. Below is a chart that shows just how much education is missed throughout a child’s school career (age 5-18) due to poor attendance. If you have any concerns about your child’s attendance and would like to discuss it please contact the school office on 0161 624 9885.

Tel: 0161 624 9885 Fax : 0161 628 4231 Mob: 07725 925 681. Email: [email protected]

To help us keep our school head lice free please ensure that you check your child’s hair each week. Thank you.

Attendance Targets We regularly monitor pupil attendance and over the next week we will be contacting parents/carers of children whose attendance is below our target attendance percentage of 96.5%. Education is a vital part of a child’s development and as such the child’s right to education should be protected. St Anne’s CE (Aided) Primary School takes a strong line in this respect and relies on the support of parents to ensure that our attendance statistics are as high as possible. Parents/carers have a legal responsibility to ensure their child attends regularly and punctually. If a child does not, parents/carers may be breaking the law. If the school has concerns about a pupil being absent or do not accept the explanation for an absence as genuine, the Headteacher or School Business Manager will raise the matter with the Education Attendance Service and it could result in a fixed penalty notice fine. We will be sending out letters to all Parents and Carers of children that have current attendance that is

below our target of 96.5% to help you monitor your child’s attendance.

Attendance recorded at 96.5% - Excellent. Attendance recorded at 94.5%-96% -Good. Attendance recorded at 93%-94.5% - Average Attendance recorded at 93% and below - Poor These grades are in line with Ofsted judgements on attendance

Mobile Phones We are seeing an increase in children bringing their mobile phones into school. We cannot take responsibility for the loss or damage of any personal belongings brought into school.

Can we please ask that only children that are walking home on their own bring their phones into school. Children are not permitted to use their mobile phones during the day If children are found to be using their mobile phone or are found to have their mobile on them during the school day the mobile phone will be confiscated and returned to them after one week. Mobile phones should not be brought into school unless children are walking home without an adult. Only Year 6 children should be walking home on their own and parents should notify the school that this will be happening. Mobile phones should be brought to the office and collected at the end of the school day.

Bags2School St Anne’s PTA are now collecting for Bags2School Friday 9th October 2015. It is now time to bring into fill your bags with unwanted clothes, belts, handbags (please no shoes, bedding, curtains or towels). The more you bring in, the more St Anne’s School will raise for our children. So please have a good clear out and bring your bags in to school. Please take all bags to the school hall and NOT the classroom (for health and safety reasons). If you have a large amount of bags, you can drop them off in the school hall on Thursday 8th October between 5pm-6pm. Each child will automatically be entered into a prize draw for every bag brought in. Good luck!

Please help us to reduce the spread of germs and remind children to Catch it, Bin it, Kill it.

Attendance category changes From September 2015 the level of attendance that will be classed as persistently absent (PA) has changed. Whereas previously attendance of 80% was classed as PA, now an attendance figure of 90% or less will be classed as PA and Parents/Carers could find themselves being issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice fine. To bring our attendance categories more in line with the National figures, and to assist us in monitoring those children whose attendance is at risk of falling into the level of PA, we will be amending ours to: Attendance recorded at 96.5% - Excellent. Attendance recorded at 95.1-96.49% -Good. Attendance recorded at 94.24-95.09% - Average Attendance recorded at 94.23% and below – Poor We will continue to review all pupil attendance and contact the Parents/Carers of those children on a half termly basis that has an attendance figure of Average or below. WHAT CAN PARENTS DO TO HELP? • Let the school know as soon as possible why your child is away - stating a reason for the absence and an expected date of return. • Send a note when your child returns to school. • Try to make medical appointments outside school time. • Do not allow your child to have time off school unless it is really necessary. We are able to administer medicines (with the relevant paperwork completed - please see the office) during the school day. If you are worried about your child’s attendance at school you should… • Talk to your child; it may be something simple. • Talk to the Headteacher and staff at the school. If absences continue the school may refer to the Attendance Service or you may contact the Attendance Officer, who will work with you and the school to resolve the situation. (Telephone number available from the School Office). Our full Attendance Policy can be found at http://www.stannesroyton.oldham.sch.uk/ or a copy can be obtained from the school office.
