Preventive vision care is just as important as early dental care!
Thank you to our dessert and snack vendors!
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank our students, parents, staff, and PTO for making our Titan Fun Run fundraiser such a success. Not only did we have some fun, get some exercise, and learn to encourage others…but we raised funds that will go directly into the academic and instructional programs here at TCES.
Let me take a moment as well to brag about our staff of incredible educators. I am so proud of their commitment to our students as well as the expertise and passion they demonstrate daily. It is a joy to serve your children alongside our staff!
As I have said before … it is great to be a Titan!

Taking Care of Your EyesNow is a great time to talk with your child about eye health! This month all students at TCES are will have both their vision and hearing screened. I’m testing their visual acuity which reveals the sharpness of vision. Then in November, volunteers from the Lions Club will be coming and testing kindergarten, first, and third grades for abnormalities such as astigmatism, nearsightedness, farsightedness, and misalignment of the eyes. We’re so fortunate to have this done for free by these generous volunteers.
Tips for great eye health:
• Haveacomprehensiveeyeexam. Many common eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and age-related macular degeneration often have no warning signs. A comprehensive eye exam is the only way to detect these diseases in their early stages.
• Eatrighttoprotectyoursight. Foods such as fruits and vegetables, especially dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, or collard greens; and fish high in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, tuna, and halibut are especially beneficial.
AvoidEyeStrainwhileusing acomputer.
• Lighting—Position the computer screen to avoid glare from overhead lighting or windows. Replace the light bulbs in desk lamps with lower wattage bulbs.
• Locationofcomputerscreen—Most people find it more comfortable to view a computer when the eyes are looking downward. The computer screen should be 4 or 5 inches below eye level.
• Restbreaks—To prevent eyestrain, try to rest your eyes when using the computer for long periods. Rest your eyes for 15 minutes after two hours of continuous computer use. Also, for every 20 minutes of computer viewing, look into the distance for 20 seconds to allow your eyes a chance to refocus.
• Blinking—To minimize your chances of developing dry eyes when using a computer, make an effort to blink frequently. Blinking keeps the front surface of your eye moist.

Youmayhavenoticedthatthereisanewprogram being introduced to your student: Hybridge®, a digital program from the company Compass Learning. The PTO was abletopurchaseHybridge® by Compass Learning and the total cost was $36,840.01. Thanks to the generous donations made last year through our fundraising efforts, the PTO was able to make a down payment on this program last June. And, due to the wonderful success of Titan Fun Run this September, the PTO was able to complete the purchase of the program and it can be implemented immediately!
TheHybridge® program is starting to be introduced to each classroom and will be used by every student at TCES in the areas of Math and ELA. We wanted to make sure every parent knows what the program is and why the PTO chose to purchase it.
Hybridge® is a K–8 learning acceleration software from Compass Learning® and ensures quality digital learning time in the classroom. Unlike other programs cluttered with activities not directly aligned to classroomcurriculum,Hybridge® delivers standards-aligned content integrated with TCES’ scope and sequence.
What this means, is that each teacher at TCES can create individual learning paths for each of their students to follow, highlighting the skills and concepts that they need to work on the most.

Since many of the faculty at TCES have used Compass Learning programs at other schools, the administration and teachers knew what they were looking for in a program. After trying several other programs that stated they could deliver all of the aspects of Compass Learning for less they found them to be greatly lacking in comparison. Each time they discussed what they felt the absolute best program available was the conversation came back to Compass Learning.
We are so excited to be able to implement this program for use at school and at home! We truly believe this will enhance the learning path of each TCES student!

Stress and worry are a normal part of life. As adults we have learned coping strategies, we have figured out some problem solving techniques to get us through stressful times. Children can benefit from our knowledge and need to be taught these important life skills. BelowisanarticlefromKidsHealth.orgthat outlines some ideas on helping your child cope with stress.
helping Kids Cope with stress To adults, childhood can seem like a carefree time. But kids still experience stress. Things like school and their social life can sometimes create pressures that can feel overwhelming for kids. As a parent, you can’t protect your kids from stress — but you can help them develop healthy ways to cope with stress and solve everyday problems. Kids deal with stress in both healthy and unhealthy ways. And while they may not initiate a conversation about what’s bothering them, they do want their parents to reach out and help them cope with their troubles. But it’s not always easy for parents to know what to do for a child who’s feeling stressed.
here are a few ideas:Noticeoutloud.Tell your child when you notice that something’s bothering him or her. If you can, name the feeling you think your child is experiencing. (“It seems like you’re still mad about what happened at the playground.”) This shouldn’t sound like an accusation (as in, “OK, what happened now? Are you still

mad about that?”) or put a child on the spot. It’s just a casual observation that you’re interested in hearing more about your child’s concern. Be sympathetic and show you care and want to understand.
Listentoyourchild.Ask your child to tell you what’s wrong. Listen attentively and calmly—with interest, patience, openness, and caring. Avoid any urge to judge, blame, lecture, or say what you think your child should have done instead. The idea is to let your child’s concerns (and feelings) be heard. Try to get the whole story by asking questions like “And then what happened?” Take your time. And let your child take his or her time, too.
Commentbrieflyonthefeelingsyouthinkyourchildwasexperiencing. For example, you might say “That must have been upsetting,” “No wonder you felt mad when they wouldn’t let you in the game,” or “That must have seemed unfair to you.” Doing this shows that you understand what your child felt, why, and that you care. Feeling understood and listened to helps your child feel supported by you, and that is especially important in times of stress.
Putalabelonit. Many younger kids do not yet have words for their feelings. If your child seems angry or frustrated, use those words to help him or her learn to identify the emotions by name. Putting feelings into words helps kids communicate and develop emotional awareness—the ability to recognize their own emotional states. Kids who can do so are less likely to reach the behavioral

boiling point where strong emotions come out through behaviors rather than communicated with words.
Helpyourchildthinkofthingstodo. If there’s a specific problem that’s causing stress, talk together about what to do. Encourage your child to think of a couple ofideas.Youcanstartthebrainstormingif necessary, but don’t do all the work. Yourchild’sactiveparticipationwillbuildconfidence. Support the good ideas and addtothemasneeded.Ask,“Howdoyou think this will work?”
Listenandmoveon. Sometimes talking and listening and feeling understood is all that’s needed to help a child’s frustrations begin to melt away. Afterward, try changing the subject and moving on to something more positive and relaxing. Helpyourchildthinkofsomethingtodoto feel better. Don’t give the problem more attention than it deserves.
Limitstresswherepossible. If certain situations are causing stress, see if there are ways to change things. For instance, if too many after-school activities consistently cause homework stress, it might be necessary to limit activities to leave time and energy for homework.
Justbethere.Kids don’t always feel like talking about what’s bothering them. Sometimes that’s OK. Let your kids know you’ll be there when they do feel like talking. Even when kids don’t want to talk, they usually don’t want parents to leavethemalone.Youcanhelpyourchildfeel better just by being there — keeping him or her company, spending time together. So if you notice that your child seems to be down in the dumps, stressed, or having a bad day — but doesn’t feel like talking — initiate something you can do together. Take a walk, watch a movie, shoot some hoops, or bake some cookies. Isn’t it nice to know that your presence really counts?
Be patient. As a parent, it hurts to see your child unhappy or stressed. But try to resist the urge to fix every problem. Instead, focus on helping your child, slowly but surely, grow into a good problem-solver — a kid who knows how to roll with life’s ups and downs, put feelings into words, calm down when needed, and bounce back to try again.
Parents can’t solve every problem as kids go through life. But by teaching healthy coping strategies, you’ll prepare your kids to manage the stresses that come in the future. © 1995- 2016 . The Nemours Foundation/KidsHealth®.Reprintedwithpermission.
