and delays as well as precipitating all over us.
We hope you fared well through this tropical
storm, which unfortunately adversely affected
many.
Thanks to Irma, our member tea scheduled for
September 13 was postponed. We’ve
rescheduled to Wednesday, October 11, from
2:00 until 4:00 pm. Our venue remains the
same: The Island House, 2658 Swygert Lane,
John’s Island. Directions: Off River Road,
between Main Road and Maybank Hwy.
We can’t blame Irma for this one, however.
The Sippin’ Sangria on the Stono, Paella
Dinner has been postponed because our
chef/entertainer has been delayed in his return
to Charleston. We expect to reschedule this
fun and important event which benefits the
David & Karen Stahl Memorial Scholarship
Fund. So, stay tuned for updates.
The first of our Revels events is October 1st at
the home of Gail and Mike Maginnis: Sounds
of Nature with Yuriy and Friends. Hope you
made your reservation; if not, you’re out of luck
– this one sold out quickly. I heartily
recommend you peruse the Revels brochure
(the lovely green brochure you should’ve
received about a month ago – the Revels
information is also on our website and a
summary is on the last page of this Keynotes)
and sign up now for the events which appeal to
you. Go online to https://csolinc.org/revels to
make your reservations now. Spots are filling
up fast.
Our 20th Annual Island Tour of Homes on
Kiawah and Seabrook Islands is set for
Saturday, November 4th.
Well, the past
month has been
quite interesting --
Irma precipitated
many cancellations
There are seven
outstanding homes to be
seen and enjoyed. Buy
your tickets prior to the day
of the tour and save $5 per
ticket. You can help this
project tremendously by
serving as a docent,
providing refreshments for
our guests and/or by being
a sponsor. Contact Becky
Hilstad [email protected].
Happy Fall Y’all! Hope to
see you at our fun events.
Kitty

Volunteers are a special breed – not everyone wants to donate their time, for even a great cause. Round of Applause is acknowledgement
by President Kitty Reid to honor CSOL® volunteers.
It’s a GROUP HUG this time around for the
COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE. This
dedicated group of CSOL® members worked
diligently for two years to come up with a new,
revitalized logo, tagline, vision statement and
reworded mission statement. David Savard, Sue
Ingram, Patti Tully, Lyn Magee and Jodie-Beth
Galos spent many hours to finalize and present to
the entire Board their proposals. The Board then
approved their recommendations. Do hope you
like our new look? I know I do – and I’d love to
hear what you think.
A successful Silent Auction begins with YOU!
Over the years, auctions have been the
CSOL®’s primary source of revenue for our
fundraising efforts at our annual galas. It’s no
different for our upcoming gala “Tonight,
Tonight.” We need your assistance to help us
obtain desirable items from your friends, family,
colleagues, vendors, and more.
We want you and our other attendees to be
excited to shop at our Silent Auction, so simply
think about item you’d like. For instance, Judy
Kay Goldberg obtained a Gift of Beauty from
her hair salon, while Jodie-Beth Galos obtained
a gift basket from Olinda Olives and Olive Oil,
her favorite vendor at the Marion Square
Farmers Market. A number of years ago, Jane
Miller bid on a week’s vacation in the
mountains at another fundraising event. She
enjoyed it so much, she sent the owner a
request to donate a week to our gala … and
Jane said she’d buy it -- all over again. So, be
self-involved and help us create a successful
auction.
Send contacts and suggestions to Sue Ingram,
Chair of the Gala Auctions
[email protected]. Happy shopping.

Nicholas Bentz has returned to
Baltimore to work on a master’s
degree in violin, having completed
a bachelor’s degree in both violin
and composition at the Peabody
Institute. Nicholas is exploring
opportunities worldwide in further
composition studies. His ambitious
hour-long chamber symphony
Approaching Eternity will be
commercially released on
November 3. It’s cause for an
early holiday celebration.

Jonathon Heyward continues his two-
year appointment as assistant
conductor of the Halle Orchestra in
Manchester, UK with upcoming
international engagements ranging
from Prague to St. Petersburg. This
summer, Jonathon enjoyed a week’s
residency with the Los Angeles
Philharmonic, which he found
inspiring. He returns to LA for another
engagement in November.
Shannon Fitzhenry’s most recent
accomplishment was an invitation to
play at the Tanglewood Music Center,
the summer home of the Boston
Symphony Orchestra, an experience
she termed “fabulous.” Now in her
final year of studying violin at
Peabody, Shannon is the assistant
concertmaster of the Peabody
Symphony which is composed of
junior and senior students as well as
Concertmaster of the Peabody
Conductors Orchestra for conducting
students.
Abigail Kent, as first prize winner at the
American Harp Society Competition for
Young Professionals, became the
official AHS Concert Artist for 2017-19
and will present recitals and master
classes in Canada and the United
States. In July Abigail performed as a
featured soloist of the World Harp
Society in Hong Kong. CSOL®
members will have the opportunity to
hear her again at the Charleston
Library Society this winter. Mark your
calendars and save Valentine’s Day to
hear our sweet harpist.
For the first time, all fifth graders
in Charleston County public
schools can participate in a
strings program. Last year, the
Charleston County School
District considered eliminating
the elementary school strings
program to transfer those funds
to middle and high school
programs.
CSOL® Education Committee
members attended a School
Board meeting to advocate for
continuation of the program. The
result? The approval of an
expanded program. It pays to
show up and speak up on behalf
of things that matter.
