The 500 th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation is only a few weeks away as we mark Martin Luther’s posting of his 95 Thesis on the doors of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. Here at Ascension we have used this landmark anniversary as an opportunity to teach about the Reformation and what it is that we believe as Lutheran Christians. Over the past 12 months, we have: Observed events like Luther’s birth and death Engaged in the “A Man Named Martin” DVD Bible study on Sunday mornings Participated in our Reformation Walk Hosted “A Mighty Fortress” vacation Bible school. Shared in the “Seven Things Every Lutheran Should Know” sermon series Introduced a family-friendly book about Luther’s Life called “Echoes of the Hammer,” as our Hintze Library Book of the Month But this is all leading up to the observance of the Reformation at Ascension the weekend of October 28 and 29. Here are some things to look forward to over this special celebration weekend: Introduction of the Reformation’s 500 th anniversary hymn “Though All Our Life is Like a Scroll” Breakfast in the Fellowship Hall on October 29 sponsored by our Men’s Club Ascension’s Choir and Hand Bells will be singing and ringing October 29 at our 8:15 am service Concordia Seminary will be hosting a 500 th Anniversary Reformation service on Reformation Day, October 31 at 7 pm at the Chapel of St. Timothy and Titus. Kolbs Korner . . . August 2017

The Kolb family is moving to Thailand! The Lutheran Church of Thailand requested a missionary to come and work with their pastors and congregations and the LCMS said yes. The LCMS is send me and my family to Chiang Mai, Thailand to work alongside local Thai pastors and Thai congregations proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ. In a land of 68 million people, only one present are Christian. St. Paul writes in 1 Timothy 2:4 “[God}

desires all people to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.” Let us remind Him of this desire and ask that the hearts of the Thai people will be ready and willing to hear the message of Christ Jesus. The Son of God who came in the flesh to live, suffer, die and rise from the dead for our salvation is a message that will bring to Thailand. Please pray for the Thai people that their hearts and ears are prepared to hear and confess the Gospel of Christ and for the Kolb family as we make the transition from Hong Kong to Thailand. In Christ, Pastor Kolb and family

“Luther-Echoes of the Hammer by Susan Leigh

Read the story of Martin Luther, a man who lead a revolution that changed the world. From a small town in medieval Germany, the Reformation resulted in dramatic, sweeping change that still echoes today. Here is Luther's story of adventure, courage, and faith told for the first time in graphic novel style. Also included is a comprehensive explanation of Luther's Seal and an extensive history timeline that gives broad context to Luther's life. This Luther biography provides an education and appreciation of Luther and the Reformation in a fun format.

Ascension Activities . . . SERMON SERIES: 7 THINGS EVERY LUTHERAN SHOULD KNOW Think you know what it takes to be a Lutheran? Come find out! The 7 weekends leading up to our celebration the 500th anniversary of the Reformation on the weekend of October 28-29, we’ll focus on 7 things every Lutheran should know.

THE ASCENSION GREEN TEAM (Greenies) met a second time on Sept. 14th. We are-Randy Agne, Jon Gibbs, Sharon Headrick, Dianne Thies, Katlyne Thies, Sarah Tanurchis and Erika Zaza.

"GREEN MEANS CHANGE" What's been done: Word of Life School dishwasher has been repaired so reusable divided lunch trays are again being used. Church office uses recycled paper for copies. Copies of our newsletter, The Messenger, going out via internet, greatly reducing paper used and postage costs. Lights being replaced by LED bulbs.. Recycling bins are in use at WOL school. Recycling bins were used at the Sept. 16th Trivia fund raiser. Applied for and received a $250.00 Thrivent Grant to be used for startup costs as we get underway. What's doing now: A logo is being designed and when approved will be used on reusable shopping bags along with the Ascension logo. The bags will be for sale when completed. A Single Stream recycling dumpster will replace the paper only dumpster in the alley behind WOL school. The paper only dumpster does not earn monies any longer for the school. The one time cost of the Single Stream dumpster is covered by part of the above Thrivent Grant. Interior and Exterior recycling containers, (except for the one time fee) are freely provided and there is no cost for pickups.

What's in the near future: A reliable and affordable source to purchase and maintain biodegradable paper plates, cups etc. for use at all church functions. A clear reduction in the number and therefore cost of "trash" pickups necessary by being dedicated in our use of recyclables. Let's be Lutherans helping to restore Creation! Ideas or suggestions? Contact one of the above “Greenies”

LUTHERAN HOUR LIVE BROADCAST recorded on Sunday, June 11 at Ascension, will be aired on Sunday, October 8 at 12:30 pm & 5:00 pm on KFUOAM850. You have all probably heard that Dr. Greg Seltz has accepted a

Music Musings . . . ASCENSION IS EXCITED ABOUT RECOMMENCING it’s choir, bell choir, and incorporating instrumentalists in its traditional and contemporary services. Ascension’s members are welcome to contact the Director of Music, Gabe Maichel ([email protected]), about being involved musically at Ascension. The Choir rehearses on Thursdays at 7:30pm. The Ascension Choir looks forward to continuing the study and performance of Lutheran hymnody and Christian choral music. Choir members enjoy the emotion of music correlating with the realness and fact of God’s Word. Bell choir rehearsal is scheduled for Thursdays at 6:30pm. The bell choir is looking for as many participants as possible in order to fill as many octaves as possible. Members who would like to play but are concerned about their availability may be able to serve as bell choir substitutes. The Ascension bell choir hopes to be an ensemble that has a gradual musical learning curve and great Christian comradery. Ascension is also looking to put its members’ instrumental talents to good use. Members who play an instrument and are interested in playing during at traditional service will be working with the Director of Music, Gabe Maichel, to play music that fits their instrument, ability level, and schedule. The Worship Team is also welcoming more members to join. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays at 7:00pm. A large variety of instruments may be included in this ensemble. Members who play an instrument that is already present in the Worship Team are always needed as substitute musicians. The Worship Team is a fun environment where members bring their many different musical strengths to help make up an eclectic group that has one unified mission of telling the Good News through God’s gift of music.

WOL TEACHERS OF THE MONTH-OCTOBER

Melissa Maxfield Preschool 4 year olds (Timothy)

Experience: The 2016-2017 school year marks my nineteenth year in Lutheran education. Twelve years have been in the classroom teaching a variety of grade levels including sixth, third, first, & preK. Six years were spent working part-time for the Lutheran Elementary School Association of St. Louis while my children were young. While out of the classroom, I was able to serve Lutheran schools around the city. Classroom Goals: My goals are to build preschoolers' academic skills in letters and numbers, hone fine-motor skills through a variety of activities, and develop social skills. Most importantly, I want to help them grow in their knowledge of Jesus and the love He has for them, as we strive to demonstrate His love to others around us. Interests: Hiking with my family, cooking, crafting, and photography. Favorite Bible Verse: "Be thou faithful until death and I will give you the crown of life." Revelation 2:10
