World Teachers’ Day – 26th October - Great teachers make a difference Celebrated in more than 100 countries world-wide, World Teachers' Day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 1994 to recognise the role of teachers in society. We recognise the outstanding commitment and effort of our teachers to help our students develop their talents, so that they may in turn contribute significantly to developing our society in the future. It is a day to recognise the increasingly critical role our teachers play. We are blessed to have such dedicated staff. We know that next to the socio-economic status and level of knowledge students have, teacher excellence is by far the greatest influence on learning outcomes. We also know that teachers make a real difference in assisting students in their personal and faith journey. At the College we consider all our staff as teachers, those in classroom and all other staff who support the work of our classroom teachers. All staff are teachers of the manner we relate to and support all members of the school community. All staff contribute to the core purpose of supporting student learning. Pope Francis sums up the role of a teacher; “Do not be disheartened in the face of the difficulties that the education challenge presents. Educating is not a profession but an attitude, a way of being; in order to educate it is necessary to step out of ourselves and be among young people, to accompany them in the stages of their growth and to set ourselves beside them. Give them hope and optimism for their journey in the world. Teach them to see the beauty and goodness of creation, and of man who always retains the Creator’s hallmark. But above all with your life be witnesses of what you communicate. Educators pass on knowledge and values with their words, but their words will have an incisive effect on children and young people if they are accompanied by their witness, their consistent way of life. Without consistency, it is impossible to educate. You are all educators, there are no delegates in this field”. Great teaching changes the lives of individuals and contributes to a better community. In the past the College has recognised the achievements of staff who have devoted a “Decade of Service” at the College. This year we included the blessing of staff who have given ten years of service to the College and the presentations of commemorative medals at the Irene McCormack Day Mass, so that students could show their appreciation for the work of our staff. We sincerely thank all our teachers and other staff who support our teachers, for the wonderful work in our College. We have much to celebrate in our vibrant Catholic College. I am sure Irene McCormack, with her educational background, would have been delighted with the work of our teachers, and the care and service they give to our students.
