Cooper Landing Community Club October Update
The September Community Club meeting was well attended. It was nice
to see everyone after the summer season. At the meeting we heard
updates from the Walkables Group and the Gun Club regarding their
ongoing projects and had a special visit from Senator Micciche. Two
board seats are available this year and Yvette Galbraith and Jamie
Hilton were nominated to become our new board members. Thank you
both for your interest in joining the Community Club!
There was much discussion about the Community Assistance Program and funds will be
dispersed to all groups who sent in requests. CLAPC reported about the Borough’s Hazards
discussions and how residents can weigh in with their concerns. Our Cooper Landing Youth
Group received a grant from the Kenai Mountain Turnagain Arm National Heritage Area for
their upcoming Storytelling Project. This project will provide an opportunity for the youth to
connect with the elders in their community and will give them a chance to document the
town’s history. The goal of this project is to preserve and share the memories of the people
who have shaped the community of Cooper Landing. Look for more detailed information
in the coming months.
Our next community club meeting is November 8th at 6:00 pm. Please notify Kristine (Krissy)
Route of any agenda items you’d like to add. Contact us at cooperlandingcommuni-
[email protected]. Happy Halloween!! Thank you,
Krissy Route,President

Cooper Landing Historical Society & Museum Lee Post gave a super natural history program at the museum
on Saturday,Sept. 29th after a general membership meeting.
Showing slides of his work “building bones” of many years in
Alaska and the Lower 48, including the museum’s Dead Bear
Walking, Lee included much more in his program than describing attaching one bone to
another.
Take offshore killer whales, for instance. I hadn’t even heard about the offshore orcas and
the differences between them and resident and transient orcas before Lee showed us the
broken bones of one and the ground down teeth of another. The orca with the three ribs
broken at different times, in the same area, may have been deliberately injured by another
pod member. The ground down toothed orca was only 12 years old, a young one, but
these orcas eat sharks and sharkskin used to be used for sandpaper before sandpaper was
invented.
We saw many of the animals Lee and his students have worked on---- many sea mammals
and varieties of whales, wild and tame land mammals, and birds. Lee’s slides from receiv-
ing the dead animal, using one or more methods of removing the flesh and oil, bleaching
the bones, and articulating the skeletons were enhanced by his commentary on many
aspects of the work itself, the students who participated, and the individuals and entities
who shared space and resources.
Thanks to Lee for giving to the museum an updated “Building Bear Bones” book dedicated
to Sheryl and Ed Sotelo : “Super-teachers who pulled off the creation of a world-class
skeletal exhibit by recycling a record-sized brown bear. That project (pages 48-49) was
done with their elementary school students and community Volunteers. May enthusiasm
like theirs never die.” Thanks to Sheryl and Ed for our Dead Bear Walking! Mona Painter
Board of Directors: President Mona Painter, Vice-President and Acting Treasurer Bob Baldwin, Secretary Barb
Atkinson, and Ladonna Herbert, Ron Gravenhorst, and Al Fleetwood.
Lee Post at the Cooper Landing Museum and page 51 in his Building Bear Bones revised edition now with
bear/human hand and foot bone comparisons.
