October 2019
A note from the Rector…
One of my favorite memories of seminary is from
the Sunday I helped with the Cathedral of St. John
the Devine’s St. Francis Day Festal Eucharist and
animal procession. The call came to the Seminary
that help was needed with the service.
The Cathedral, the largest in the world, was filled
with at least 2,000 worshippers, many who
brought their pets. There was a choir composed of
many voices from different places. They were
there to sing the Missa Gaia/Earth Mass written
by Paul Winter. At the end of the service, animals
like llamas, a camel, and a tortoise were brought
down the center aisle to be blessed by the Bishop
of New York.
It was a joyful celebration of the earth and all creatures and people, with plenty of yips from some of the dogs in
attendance. My friends and I, as barely-in-seminary students, were thrilled to bless people’s pets and participate.
St. Francis of Assisi was a man of wealth who gave it all up to serve God and care for all of God’s creatures. As
a result, on and around his feast day of October 4, we remember all creatures, and in more recent times our pets.
For those of us who have pets, we are very attached and their passing brings us grief. Even though we often
speak a different language, we are grateful for their companionship.
Once again, I will bless pets during the Newport Canal Day festival on Saturday, October 5. Here is the prayer I
will say:
Blessed are you, O God, King of the Universe, who blessed our lives
with these creatures that we may learn responsibility and they may teach us love.
May we continue to care for all of God’s creatures.
Love, Rebecca+

Vestry Report – September 11, 2019
Telling Our Story – Evangelism
At this Vestry meeting, we answered the question, “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if…
There were 60 people in our service every Sunday
There were more young people/young families
There was a children’s choir
We connected with more 40-year-olds
We had $1 million
In October, we will address the question about why someone should join our church and/or why people should
give to our church.
Continuum on Becoming an anti-racist, multi-cultural church, chart by Rev. Joseph Barndt
This chart was created by Rev. Joseph Barndt, author of The Anti-Racist Church. Rev. Barndt has been one of
the facilitators of the Undoing Racism workshops presented in the Diocese. There are six phases on the chart
going from monocultural to multicultural to anti-racist to anti-racist, multicultural. The six types of churches
are:
1. An intentionally segregated church
2. A “Club” church
3. A multicultural church
4. Identity Change – an anti-racist church
5. Structural change – a Transforming Church
6. A Changing Church in Society
The Diocese is using this chart for itself and for individual parishes to help us see where we are and where we
would like to be. One of the challenges we find is that our area now and even in the next ten years remains
predominantly White. However, there are still things we can do. We can participate in the Diocesan workshops,
learn more about the history in our area and examine our own practices to ensure we are anti-racist and
multicultural.
If you would like to see the full chart, ask Rebecca.
At our October meeting, we will look at a White Supremacy pyramid.
Our Finances
Vestry Pledges
All members of the Vestry returned their pledges for the 2020 year. They pledged a total of $38,552, which
includes $27,752 for program and mission and $10,800 for Building.
2020 Budget
The Finance Committee is meeting to draft our 2020 Budget. A draft will be approved at the October meeting.
2018 Audit
The 2018 Audit is nearly complete. Vestry will be asked for email approval when all signatures are obtained. A
copy of the Audit will be sent to the Diocese.
Stewardship of our Property
2019 Projects
We will contact the painter to firm up a time when the church will be painted.
We continue to work on repair and coating of the “bricks” in the church property and hanging the “Love Your
Neighbor” banner.
Todd Saner will meet with craftspeople about the doors and windows at St. Stephen’s.
Stormwater Damage
We have received our insurance reimbursement for the stormwater damage that occurred in the spring.
2020 projects and budget request
The Property Committee requests that we replace the windows in the parish house. Painting of the parish house
is on the maintenance and repair schedule for 2020 and it doesn’t make sense to paint and then replace the
windows a couple of years later.
In May of 2016, a Facilities Condition Assessment report was presented to Vestry by EMG. The report,
complete with photos, detailed the condition of every system of the Nativity facility. A 20-year repair and
maintenance plan was presented with specific suggestions and cost estimates for the repairs and maintenance
required each year. The costs included a 3% cost increase per year, compounded annually.
The Property Committee worked with Russ Hoover on modifying the suggestions to better fit our needs. In
addition, some items were done earlier than the recommendation. For instance, when there was a part needed
for the AC units in the church, the whole system was replaced, because the original manufacturer no longer
made the units and we could not get replacement parts. The report shows that a total of $406,563 is needed over
20 years to pay for necessary repairs and maintenance. That is an average of $20,368 per year. Some years
require more than that and some less.
The Property Committee recommends that the 2020 budget include $30,000 to replace the windows and paint
the parish house. The EMG report estimated a 2016 cost of $14, 397 to replace the windows and $6,390 to paint
the interior. A copy of the complete chart is hanging in the Undercroft with notations about what year we’ve
done the tasks.
Serving our Community – Giving To Others (GTO)
The Vestry approved the recommendation of The Program and Mission Committee for donations to 36
organizations in our counties and Diocese. This includes $600 for needs that may emerge during the year. The
total recommended was $21,100, nearly 10% of the money received from the Bechtel and Deckard Trusts
during 2018. A complete list and amounts are on the next page of this newsletter.
Plans for Rebecca’s April 26-July 26, 2020 Sabbatical
Plans continue to be made for Rebecca’s sabbatical. The grant money should be distributed to the church by
October. The Finance Committee is working on procedures for Rebecca to access the money in accordance with
the grant guidelines and best practices. Part of the challenge is that for much of the time, Rebecca will be in
Europe.
Vestry agreed to discussions with Canon Robert Schiesler regarding serving as supply while Rebecca is on
sabbatical. Certain responsibilities may need to be covered by Vestry members, the parish administrator or
parish members. Rebecca will get more information from Canon Schiesler about what he is available to do.
See Rebecca’s sabbatical itinerary on the next page.
Our Leadership – Nominating Committee Seeking people to serve
Shannon Burns and Kay Cramer are the nominating committee for 2020 leadership. There are 2-3 openings for
members of Vestry. Kay can run for a second term; however, Shannon has served six years and cannot serve
another term. The committee will also seek people to serve as Delegate and Alternate Delegate to the 2020
Diocesan Convention. If you are interested in any of these positions, please let them know.
The next meeting is Wednesday, October 9, 6pm.

Rebecca’s Sabbatical Itinerary
The grant funders like to see a mix of education and rest. The education focus is on Paul and the spread of the
church to Rome.
April 27 – May 10 – By Sea & Land: Paul’s Journey to Rome. This is an education tour through Tutku tours.
The Tour Director & Teacher is Dr. Wayne House, Distinguished Research Professor of Biblical and
Theological Studies at Faith International University and Faith Seminary, Tacoma, Washington. The Tour starts
in Malta where the ship carrying Paul to Rome wrecked. For more information see:
http://www.tutkutours.com/waynehouse/MALTA-SICILY-ITALY-2020-W.House.pdf
May 10-24 – Time for rest and study in Rome. I may take some one-day trips via train to places like Assisi.
May 24 – June 16 – Rest and time with family in Riposto, Sicily. This is the town where my grandfather was
born and I still have family living there. Riposto is along the ocean with Mt. Etna in the background. I may take
a trip to the island of Lipari where my maternal great-grandparents lived.
June 17 – June 29 – Viking Ocean Cruise from Barcelona to Venice. I will join colleagues I worked with in
Kentucky for this cruise, both learning and pleasure. We will visit Barcelona, Marseille, France; Monte Carlo;
Pisa/Florence; Rome; Naples; Corfu (Greece); Dubrovnik and Split (Croatia); and Venice. Here is more about
the itinerary: https://www.vikingcruises.com/oceans/cruise-destinations/western-mediterranean/mediterranean-
odyssey/index.html#search/sfym=2020-6&sftcm=13-2867
June 30 – July 26 – Back in the United States for time to rest, process my time away, and enjoy family and
friends.
There are a number of ways you in the parish will hopefully benefit and join in the learning, including parlor
people; reading the book of Romans and hearing portions read each Sunday as part of the lectionary; and Godly
Play materials on Paul and his journeys.

It is Stewardship season. In our part of the world, the harvest is coming in
and it is a perfect time to consider all that God has
given us and what we will contribute to our faith
community.
The important thing from my perspective is to take
the action to pledge. When you make a pledge, you
give up control of this precious resource to a group
of us. It's a powerful, spiritual exercise.
I know pledging is not comfortable for everyone.
There was a woman I knew who didn't like the idea
of pledging. She was a faithful giver to the church.
She had a system of saving her coins and when she
had a small bag full, she'd bring the bag in and put it
in the plate. What she did was bring her coins to
church on pledge Sunday and made that her pledge.
It was paid in full and she had pledged. Then she
continued to collect her coins throughout the year
and put them in the plate as usual.
The important thing was that she had made and
fulfilled a commitment to our community. She had
participated with the church members in an
important way.
I hope all of you take the opportunity to be part of
this special spiritual practice.
Love, Rebecca
