Aging SuccessfullyWhat exactly IS successful aging? I mean doesn’t aging happen whether we do it “successfully” or not? It kinda just happens. Despite all of our good intentions and hearty fights, we age. It’s a fact of life. But what is also a fact, is that the way we approach aging has a significant impact on our enjoyment of the process. Similar to any other challenging activity, it’s always more fun and likely to be more successful the more engaged we are in the decision making process.

Successful aging is a term that refers to physical, mental and social well-being in older age. The concept of successful aging can be traced back to the 1950s, and was popularized in the 1980s. In its most simple form, successful aging is defined as life satisfaction. Rather than being defined by the lack of disease or medical conditions, it relates more to being socially engaged, staying active and managing chronic or acute illnesses in a way that increases our positive perceptions of the aging process.

Research shows that individuals engaged in activities geared towards socialization, health and wellness tend to define the aging process in more positive terms. They also tend to report greater life satisfaction. These are the same activities offered at CASI every day. Every year CASI offers close to 8,000 activities onsite that are geared towards socialization, health and wellness and light support when needed. At CASI, we understand the connection between mind, body and spirit. We work everyday to ensure the activities and services we are providing, are meeting the holistic needs of our members, guests and clients.

Are you aging successfully? Come visit CASI to learn more about this best kept secret.

The 13th Annual Holiday Hat Bash will look different this year. Our “party” with a purpose will be in the form of a Virtual Silent Auction. Every dollar invested in this year’s auction directly supports the Senior Secret Santa program and CASI’s work in the community throughout the coming winter season.

Do you have items or services you can donate to build some wonderful Auction packages? In years past Members and Friends of CASI have provided some awesome items ranging from gift certificates for businesses they own or frequent, to art work they created/own but no longer need, to unique collectibles and treasures. The options are endless and everything is appreciated.

Please contact Sue at [email protected] or 563.386.7477 Ext 229 to let us know. We can arrange for pick-up. We will be assembling the auction packages starting October 16.

Thanks for making a difference!

There’s a New Face at CASI – Welcome Amy Johnson!CASI is pleased to announce that Amy Johnson has joined the organization as Director of Operations.

Amy comes to CASI with 23 years of experience in operations, parks and recreation, and recently served as the Executive of Operations at the Two Rivers Y, in Moline, IL. Her first day at CASI was Thursday, September 23.

Amy grew up in Tampico, IL, where she played sports and loved to be outdoors with her three siblings. She says, “my family is from a farming community, and I learned good values along with hard work early on in life.” After graduating from high school Amy continued her education at Sauk Valley College in Dixon, IL, on a basketball and volleyball scholarship. She decided to go into the U.S. Army to obtain the GI Bill to finish her education and spent three years on active duty, including participating in Desert Storm. Upon her honorable discharge, she returned to school at Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL. While there she continued to serve our country in the Illinois National Guard for another five years.

When we asked her what her greatest life accomplishment is, she stated her 17-year-old son, Luke, was her pride and joy, and biggest achievement. Amy and her partner, Sue, have been together for 15 years and live in Moline. She says they live a happy life and love to travel across this great country in their RV. She also enjoys watching sports and has recently become an Iowa Hawkeye fan. “I am not just saying that to get extra points, I really have,” added Amy. She is also an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan.

CASI members and guests will have an opportunity to meet Amy during the Walk Across America Celebration at CASI, on Thursday, September 30, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. “I am so excited to start my new journey at CASI and I look forward to meeting each of you soon,” says Amy. Welcome to CASI Amy!

Life is About BalanceAs we age, there are life experiences that can make us feel older than we are. Often, we find that these can affect our balance and coordination and staying upright is not as easy as it once was. Despite the reasons for impaired balance, there are several things you can do to regain your steadiness, including incorporating balance exercises into your daily routine.

Let’s face it. Nobody wants to fall on the ground. This is why practicing balance is so important. The more you work in challenging positions that force your balance to be compromised, the easier balancing in normal day life will be. If you don’t think practicing your balance is important, there are multiple reasons you should reconsider. For example, if you are a woman, balancing exercises might be extremely important to you. This is due to the increased risk for osteoporosis as you age. Balance exercises won’t directly improve your bone density, but they will strengthen the muscles that help keep you upright, including your legs and core. These kinds of exercises can improve stability and help prevent falls. Although less prevalent in males, osteoporosis can still occur, keeping the need for practicing balance high.

Another aspect of balance exercise is that it is typically low-impact and offers a different way to workout. Variety is key to any exercise program as it usually increases enjoyment and long-term adherence to the program. Incorporating some extra balance exercises into normal cardiovascular and weight training work, keeps the program fresh and helps improve your overall health and wellbeing.

Structured balance exercise is crucial to keeping older adults as independent and mobile as possible. If you are interested in trying out some balance enhancement exercises to keep you on your feet, and off the ground, feel free to join Logan Anderson, the owner of All Strong Fitness LLC, for a 30-Minute Balance and Strength class at CASI on Tuesday afternoons. For more information on this class and other health and wellness activities at CASI, stop by the front desk, or call CASI at 563.386.7477, or call Logan at 563.210.3701.

CASI Advisory Council Sees New LeadershipAs the season begins to change so does the volunteer leadership of CASI. The organization has been in the community for close to 50 years thanks in part to its volunteers. CASI currently has more than 350 people who donate their time to helping the organization maintain its vision of being the premiere senior resource center in the Quad Cities.

This group of dedicated volunteers is led by the CASI Advisory Council. The council is made up of men and women who believe in the mission of CASI and donate their time, talents, and leadership to help guide the organization to meet today’s senior population needs, while planning for tomorrow’s visions.

In September, council members voted the following people into office:

• Eloise Graham, Chair• Karleen Noteboom, Vice-Chair• Sharon Batten, Secretary

They join fellow council members Mary Ann Maxwell, Pat Chalupa, Charlie Callahan, Shirley Koester, Darlene Wuestenberg, Carolyn Pfannenstiel and Joanne Oberbreckling.

CASI would like to thank Joanne Oberbreckling for serving as the Chair of the Senior Advisory Council for the past five years. We appreciate your leadership and your commitment to helping CASI provide a warm and welcoming environment to all those who enter.

Anyone interested in learning more about the CASI Senior Advisory Council is welcome to attend the group’s monthly meeting. They are held the first Wednesday of the month, at 9:00 am.

Financial Education Spotlight

It’s starting to cool down outside—which means your energy bills may soon rise. Here are three simple things you can do to increase energy efficiency around your home.

1. Insulate your electric outlets. You’d be surprised how much cold air seeps in around the edges of your vents. Youcan purchase foam outlet gaskets for just a few dollars. Installing them is as easy as unscrewing your outlet plate, fitting the gasket in the outlet, then screwing the plate back on.

2. Keep your ceiling fan running as temperatures drop—but make sure the blades are turning clockwise. Heatrises—and your fan can direct it back down to where you are.

3. Turn off your ice maker, if you have one. If you enjoy frosty drinks all year long, well we won’t judge. But did youknow running your icemaker increases your fridge’s electric usage by as much as 20 percent? Keep your ice cubetrays filled and save money year round.

Finally, talk to your utility company about budget, or balanced, billing. Most companies will let you average your energy consumption for the last 12 months and pay the same amount each month—so you can avoid unpleasant surprises in January and February.

CASI Welcomes A New SHIIP Counselor The Center For Active Seniors, Inc. is proud to announce that Dr. Terry Schlabach has joined the Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) team at CASI.

Dr. Schlabach retired this summer from St. Ambrose University where she was Associate Dean of the College of Health and Human Services and a professor in the Occupational Therapy Department.

She is married and has three children and four grandchildren. She also volunteers teaching English to refugees and immigrants in the Quad Cities. In her spare time, she enjoys her dogs, playing tennis, hiking, and yardwork. “Terry’s experience will play an important role as she helps area seniors navigate the challenges that can come with the Medicare

system,” said Kathy Malmloff, Director of Senior Services. “I am excited to have her on our team.”

Medicare Open Enrollment Period Begins October 15Dr. Schlabach joins the SHIIP team just in time for the Medicare Open Enrollment Period. From October 15 through December 7, Medicare recipients have an opportunity to review their supplemental Medicare plans and their Medicare prescription drug coverage to see if there are more affordable options available for 2022.

All SHIIP volunteers have been trained in Medicare and Medicaid benefits, eligibility, and claims, as well as Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Part D and Long-term Care. SHIIP counselors provide their skills on a volunteer basis and assure their clients of completely unbiased assistance. Iowa SHIIP does not sell any products or policies, does not conduct market research, and is not related to any insurance companies.

CASI SHIIP counselors are extending their available appointment times during the open enrollment period, October 15 through December 7, to provide in-person, virtual, and over the phone assistance that meets CASI’s COVID-19 guidelines.

Individuals interested in meeting with a CASI SHIIP counselor must make an appointment, in advance, by calling 563-386-7477. SHIIP clients must wear a mask, practice social distancing, and have a valid photo identification card, your Medicare card, and a list from your pharmacy of all current medications. If a list cannot be provided, CASI’sSHIIP counselors ask that you bring all your prescription medications to your scheduled appointment. No walk-inappointments will be accepted.

SHIIP is a free, confidential service offered by the State of Iowa, and sponsored by CASI, to help Iowans make informed decisions about Medicare and other health coverage.

Welcome to MedicareCome participate in this semi-monthly seminar for individuals who are turning 65 and have questions about enrolling in Medicare. Please register at CASI’s front desk or by calling 563.386.7477.
