October Birthdays
In astrology, those born from October 1–23 balance the scales of Libra. Libras are peaceful and fair, and value balance and symmetry. For this reason, they often champion justice and equality. Those born from October 24–31 are Scorpions of Scorpio. Scorpios are passionate, dedicated, and resourceful. Scorpios may seem intimidating, but they are just no-nonsense people who value honesty and loyalty above all else. Last Month at Our Lady of the Valley
While the beginning of last month at Our Lady of the Valley did not go quite as planned, we were able to get back in the swing of things towards the end of the month. We kicked off Assisted Living Week with a visit from Jean, who is an amazing balloon artist. Residents enjoyed watching her twist and form balloons such as giraffe’s, motorcycles, flowers, unicorns, dogs, crowns, and so much more! Next, we had some photo booth fun and a little wine down Wednesday. Residents had fun using the different props for the photo booth and of course drinking some wine on the front porch. We continued the celebration with porch games, a salty snack, and can’t forget the ice cream! Friday was the perfect day to sit outside on the front porch and enjoy some freshly cut watermelon! You can never go wrong with fresh fruit. We finished off the week with something a little different, frozen Italian ice! A fan favorite, The Saxy Keys came to entertain residents on the porch. Lot’s of singing along, dancing, and laughing! We received a visit one Saturday by two adorable therapy goats! Residents were able to feed, pet, and learn about these goats. We look forward to when they return! October is packed full of fun programs for everyone to enjoy. Come join the festivities!

Pastor’s Corner
It’s October, Charlie Brown!
As you know, I love this “Time” of year. Our
tradition begins with Bonfires, often it could just
be brush piles from working on the farm during
the summer months, and with dry weather
“Burn Bans” we routinely have a few that needs
attention during the fall. Our family also has set
a tradition of traveling the Blue Ridge Parkway,
stopping along the way to have Buckwheat
pancakes at Mabry’s Mill and visit the Old Mill
House, and Blacksmith’s shop. Unfortunately,
this year parts of the Parkway have experienced
road closures because of landslides and repair
work. I’m hoping that they have completed
these repairs before peak season – generally the
mid to late part of this month. There have been
so many things that have been affected or even
canceled because of Covid-19, I pray that soon
these events will be back on our calendars.
In the “Sound of Music”, Julie Andrews sang: “Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens Brown paper packages tied up with strings These are a few of my favorite things.” She went on to tell us “When the dog bites, When the bee stings, When I'm feeling sad, I simply remember my favorite things.” She went on to tell us “When the dog bites, When the bee stings, When I'm feeling sad, I simply remember my favorite things, and then I don't feel so bad”
Hats Off
You don’t have to be a fan of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to celebrate Mad Hatter Day on October 6. Carroll attempted to illustrate his book himself but soon turned to famed illustrator John Tenniel for help. It was Tenniel who depicted the Mad Hatter character with a card in his hatband reading, “In this size 10/6.” Here, the 10/6 refers not to the date October 6, but the hat’s price of 10 shillings and six pence. While the interpretation of the hat card may have been mistaken, the hatter’s “madness” is a matter of historical fact.
In the mid-19th century, the process of turning fur into felt involved the use of the chemical mercury nitrate, a poison that caused shakes, speech problems, unpredictable behavior, and hallucinations in many hatters. The idiom “mad as a hatter” developed as a result. Of course, one needn’t be mad to celebrate this offbeat holiday. Instead, enjoy Lewis Carroll’s classic novel of fantasy and nonsense, and perhaps engage in some nonsensical antics yourself.
That is pretty much how I feel about the Blue
Ridge Parkway, it has always been a pleasant
change to our busy schedule; one of my
favorite things in the month of October.
There is an Old Testament promise to the
Children of Israel that I hold on to: Joel 2:25
“And I will restore to you the years that the
locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the
caterpillar, and the palmerworm, my great
army which I sent among you.” – Pastor Al
P.S. I Have heard, that with all the
cancellations we will still get to see “It’s the
Great Pumpkin” Charlie Brown
