A PERFECT BEGINNING, BUT THERE’S MORE / UN COMIENZO PERFECTO, PERO HAY MÁS Wisdom 7:7-11 Hebrews 4:12-13 Mark 10:17-30
A rich young man approaches Jesus, undoubtedly a smart and good person. He expresses to Jesus a desire for eternal life and his fidelity to the Ten Commandments. Perhaps he was hoping that was enough. But Jesus, with love, challenges him. The young man needs to sell what he has and give it to the poor. Is he able to do this? We don’t know. All we know is that he walks away sad. Maybe, after thinking and praying about it, he does what is suggested. But he was certainly challenged by our Lord. The challenge for us is the same. Being a good follower of rules, such as the Ten Commandments, is not enough. It is a good beginning. We must move forward from the commandments and live with humility, with love, in generous service to others and always seeking divine wisdom. Then we will attain eternal life. So, let us not think that the Commandments are enough, they are only the first step to living a life of holiness as children of God. —Fr. Edwin
--Pr. Edwin

CELEBRATING THE IGNATIAN YEAR
ST. JOHN BEYZYM (1850-1912)
Born and raised in the Ukraine John joined the Jesuits in 1872 and worked for many years as an educator. The big change in his life happened in 1898 (at 48 years old) when he left for a new apostolate in Madagascar: being a minister to those with leprosy. The lepers were in terrible condition, many dying of hunger instead of leprosy, and he devoted the rest of his life to their care with great compassion. He collected money in order to build a hospital (that still exists today). He dealt with many hardships in his ministry but maintained his dedication through prayer, celebration of the Eucharist and devotion to Mary. He is called the “apostle of the lepers of Madagascar.” He was beatified in 2002. His feast day is 12 October.
“One’s country is where the greater service of God and help of
the souls is found. It does not matter where you live: at the equator or at the North Pole. What really matters is to die in the
service of the Lord Jesus…” --Bl. John Beyzym
” --Beato Juan Beyzym
