He also is a part-time car hobbyist, and the combina- tion keeps him active and feeling young. However, it was mi- nor arthritis that prompted him to shorten his span, change his thumb pitch and try some new grips, which has him bowling as com- fortably as ever, and has allowed him to continue doing something he’s done since the 1940s. It’s also a passion he shares with his wife, Kathleen. LAS VEGAS — Left-hander Tim Tripp nailed his first Professional Bowlers Assn. regional title in the South Point West Challenge with a blowout victory in the finals.

Tripp scored a 245-175 victory over Justin Spurrier of Las Vegas in the one-game championship match that was held March 25.

“By the seventh frame or so, it was all but decided,” said the 46-year-old Tripp, a Santa Clarita resident. “I was able to kind of enjoy the moment a little bit and relax and soak up what was happening. It’s been a very long time waiting for this day.”

Tripp’s decisive victory almost obscured how gritty he bowled throughout the one-day tournament en route to claiming the $2,000 top prize.

There were 69 entrants and 16 bowlers advanced to match play based on total pin count.

Tripp didn’t make it into the Round of 16 until he squeezed into the qualifying group in his eighth and final game.

A powerful 246 allowed Tripp to advance as the 10th-highest qualifier with a 1,712 score. Chris Ferreira of Visalia, who would be eliminated in his first match-play series, was the top qualifier with an 1,896.

Tripp, who works as an accountant and is the owner of the pro shop at Santa Clarita Lanes, turned back Mark My-ers of Phoenix in his first competition in match play.

The Round of 16 is a best three-out-of-five format. Tripp advanced in five games, winning the last game deci-sively with a 269, his best score of the day.

Now in the best-of-three Round of 8, Tripp met Mi-chael Duran of Banning, Calif., the second-leading quali-fier. Again, the match was extended into the final game. Tripp lost the first game before striking out in the 10th frame of the tense second game to shut out Duran en route to a 197-195 victory.

With the match on the line in the finale, Tripp once again came up big, scoring a 257-244 victory.

Tripp said he had come into the tournament with a lot of confidence, but his march to the title game appeared to be over in the best-of-one Round of 4.

He faced Craig Spencer of Tempe, Ariz., who had rolled into his match against Tripp undefeated in match play, scoring five victories.

Spencer appeared to have locked up his sixth straight victory when he went to the line on his first shot in the 10th frame, needing only a spare to win.

Spencer, stunningly, left the 2-10 split, failed to convert it and Tripp escaped with a 222-216 victory and a trip to the championship match.

“It was pretty unlikely,” said Tripp about Spencer’s misfortune. “He had been around the pocket all match. These things happen and I just thanked my lucky stars. In match play, it’s more about who you bowl and when – not as much as what you score.”

Given new life, Tripp conceded he felt “pretty confi-dent at that point.”

Tripp then put the championship match out of reach early to add to his list of strong PBA regional performanc-es, which include several runner-up finishes.

“All the matches were really close,” said Tripp about the Las Vegas regional. “When it really counted, I stepped up and performed. The one time I didn’t, I got some help.”

Tripp, who has smoked 69 perfect games and exactly 50 800 series, has been a PBA member since 1991. He competes in PBA regionals off and on.

“It was kind of surreal,” said Tripp about winning his first PBA title. “I had assumed it was going to happen a long time ago. It was a relief that it actually happened. There was a sense of calm that it happened.”

Tripp went on to advance to match play in the doubles portion of the PBA regional event with teammate Paul Bober, a Morton Grove, Ill., resident. Tripp and Bober’s team was ousted in the first round of match play, but each walked off with $550.

Tripp is considered one of the elite bowlers in the L.A. area and takes part in the ultra-competitive Bill Mossontte Majors league at Corbin Bowl in Tarzana. He holds the league’s top average at 240 and ripped off a 730 in league action last week.

Tripp says he’s been bowling nearly all his life, first picking up a ball when he was 5. He shot his first 300 at 21 and still remembers that special date: May 7, 1990.

The honors keep coming for Tim Tripp, who has rolled 69 perfect games and 50 800 series. He sealed his PBA regional title in Las Vegas with a 245-175 victory in the championship match.

Plenty of drama in Tim Tripp’s PbA Regional Title

by Fred Eisenhammer

He practices several times a week and top bowler Matt Jones heaps a lot of praise on Tripp for his work ethic.

“He’s put in so much work the past 20 years,” Jones says. “He’s worked about as hard as anyone I’ve ever seen in the sport. And when you do, you deserve it [PBA title].”

Said Tripp: “To put in the hard work and see the reward is very satisfying.”

The South Point West Challenge was considered a so-called “non-champions” event, meaning it was open to PBA members who do not hold a PBA title and non-mem-bers who have never won a PBA event.

Tripp plans to compete in additional PBA regional events, most likely in June.

“I’d like to prove this was not a one-time thing – that I can do it again,” Tripp said.

Summing up his PBA regional victory, Tripp said: “I really didn’t feel any pressure. It was almost like it was my time.”

CONGRATULATIONS...... Ron Range, member of the Roaring 90’s League, who on

March 10th, used his Gold Storm, and rolled a beautiful set of 275-228-235 for a 738 series.

Ron was introduced to bowling at age eight. It was “his game”. He joined the youth leagues until he was old enough to qualify to bowl with and join the certified adult leagues.however, it wasn’t until 20 years ago, in his early 40’s, that Ron became very serious about his game. He improved his average from a 175 bowler to a 200 bowler, collecting two 300 games, coming close several other times. Ron’s three best series to date are 738, 739 and 740. Ron’s current average of 213 in the Roaring 90’s League is the highest he has maintained in a single league.

RyAN COLE Completes His Own “March Madness” With an 812

by Frank WeilerMURRIETA — Ryan Cole has been posting big scores

for years. He regularly rolls perfect games and 800s. Five years ago he set a new house record for Cal Oaks Bowl (858) which still stands.

Last Thursday Ryan rolled an 812 (288-255-269) in Cal Oaks 640 Scratch Trio League to finish the month of March averaging close to 265 in the league, for the month. The month also included a 300 game. It was Ryan’s version of “March Madness”. That is, March Bowling Madness. So to what does Ryan attribute his March Madness success? Having a plan, sticking to the plan and hard work. With the help of teammate DARRON PETERS he has retooled his game, his equipment and his bowling work ethic.

Ryan’s results prove that practice and adjustments are important. He also found that the proper equipment is also vital to scoring. By working with Darron he found that getting his equipment to match the lane conditions he was bowling on was just as important. Peters, proprietor of the Rollin’ Rock Pro Shop, has guided Ryan’s ball choices this season and laid them out perfectly.

Speaking of ball choices and layouts, Ryan’s new DV8 Grudge has helped him set a torrid pace throughout March. Ryan’s low series with his Grudge is 778! Read again, RYAN’S LOW SET WITH THE GRUDGE IS 778! Dar-ron used a centered high pin on the aggressive Grudge to give Ryan the length and backend he needed to score.

Ryan is grateful to Peters for being so instrumental in improving his game. Congratulations to Ryan and thanks to the BOWLING NEWS for supporting CA bowlers.

JaT sport Juniors RecapKylie Shishima Tops

JAT Sport Juniors by David Schiada

JAT Sport Junior’s girls were the stars in last Satur-day’s league action at Key-stone Lanes.

Kylie Shishima led all bowlers with a 690 series for four games on the At-lanta pattern.

Michaela Buhain was next with a 678 series, just edging out David Schneider who had a 676. David had the high game if the week with a 206. Austin Sug-arman (204) and Jackie Azvedo (201) also broke the 200 barrier.

Upcoming Tournament: April 10 – JAT Adult/Member Doubles at Covina Bowl.

JAT Sport is a league for advanced juniors who are serious about competitive bowling. The league runs every Saturday starting at noon at bowlers have an opportunity to earn scholar-ship awards and compete in tournaments, including the 2016 Junior Gold Cham-pionships to be held July 16-22 in Indianapolis, In-diana If you are interested in joining, please contact Armando Zavala at (562) 896-4467 or join us Key-stone Lanes on Saturday at noon.

van Gurp, his material caregiver and one of his two trainers, says that Yorick has a natural talent. He has a natural way of swing and release. His motor skills are extremely suitable for bowling. He trains almost daily for an hour and a half in the gym, in addition to the training sessions at the bowling alley.

At the EYC 2016 Reykjavik he unfortunately failed and was a little bit unlucky in the games.

The Championship had to be achieved in 5 steps. In Step 4 in the quarterfinals, Yorick defeated his direct opponent Alexy Steppin from Russia with a score of 793 for 3 games and an average of 246.33. In the semifinal, he bowled the late winner William Svensson (Sweden).

Svensson scored games of 213-233-248 = 694 pins with an average of 231.33. Which is a huge score., against van Deutekom games of 240-197-225 = 220.66 avg.

And here ended the journey from the defending champion.Third place. Bronze Medal. Svensson won the finalstep against the Finn, Jesse Ahokas and became the European

Champion 2016.Svensson, was during the championship the better one, in all levels, Doubles, Single,

etc etc.Bowling talents are very often coming from the Scandinavian countries Sweden, Nor-

way and Finland, where bowling is a bigger sport than in other European countries. It is no suprise any more that these talents are discovered by talentscouts and coming

up from these countries, and later on, are bumping up to the PBA.But bowling talents coming up from a small country like the Netherlands who can

make the final step to the PBA level, is an exception. So stay with me and follow these Dutch players. Maybe you can remember this article and recognize them in future when they play as a Pro in the PBA.

Editors Note: Sounds like being on the PBA tour is a dream of a lot of Europeon youth bowlers.

by Fred Eisenhammer

WINNETKA – Dan Kline dismissed it as “just one of those things.”

Other bowlers might not have been so kind.Kline, a left-handed marksman, was zeroing in on his

first perfect game – after several career near-misses.The Chatsworth resident already held an assortment of

11-in-a-row-strikes games, which included a 297 gem in October 2013.

So there he was back in rhythm, firing one strike af-ter another in his second game last month during Tuesday night “Ellen’s Comedians” league at Winnetka Bowl.

First ball: StrikeSecond ball: StrikeThird ball: StrikeFourth ball: StrikeFifth ball: StrikeSixth ball: StrikeSeventh ball: StrikeEighth ball: StrikeNinth ball: Well, we seem to have a problem. It seems

Kline’s lane suffered a mechanical breakdown after the bowler ahead of Kline left a 10 pin.

“All of a sudden, there was something wrong with the ball return,” said Kline, who averages 214 in the league. “And besides the ball return, there was something wrong with the lights.

“It took about five minutes or longer. I was just waiting patiently.”

Finally, Kline delivered his next shot. Slightly thrown off rhythm with the extended wait, he left the six pin be-fore finishing with a score in the 260s.

Not one to whine about the misfortune, Kline took the disappointment in stride.

Two weeks later, he rolled an “Andy Varipapa” 300 in which he nailed 12 strikes in a row over two games (eight straight at the end of the first game and four straight at the start of the second). That gem occurred in his Monday night “River Maniacs” league at Winnetka Bowl.

Talk about Kline’s unusual lane-breakdown game has made the rounds.

Said Vince Koeller, who has blasted three perfectos: “I can’t wait for him to get [the 300] because I’ve been bowl-ing with him for such a long time. I keep hoping he’ll get it.’’

Said Johnnie Englehart, who has accumulated 63 per-fect games: “With a 200-or-better average, it’s almost not complete unless you have [a 300]. Sometimes, it takes a few times of being close. I hope he gets one. I hope he gets a couple.”

Said Mike Willis, the manager of Winnetka Bowl: “I al-ways cringe when someone goes for 300 and a lane breaks down.”

The 56-year-old Kline, who has been bowling for about 50 years, has his sights set on his first 800 series as well as the 300. He’s come just as close to the 800 as the perfect game.

Last year he racked up a 777 (279, 220, 278) and he’s also blasted a 792 in which he had a shot at an 800 but misfired in the 10th frame.

With about a dozen clean 30s (no opens in his three-game series) to his credit, Kline knows he’s bowling well enough to have more opportunities at a perfect game.

“I know it’s coming,” he said.

NATIONAL dEAF bOWLING NEWSRESULTS OF 32nd ANNUAL SN-CdbA TOURNEy AT AMF CARTER bOWL FEb 13-14RECORd bREAKERS: EdWIN MILLER 300, dARRELL STOGRyN 2211 ALL-EVENTS

by Connie MarchioneFULLERTON — In last week’s report of 32nd annual SN-CDBA regular team, doubles and singles tournament head-

line was put for Edwin Miller’s 300 game in the team event because Edwin is first with the feat of two 300s after his first one in 2014. While Darrell Stogryn was reported hitting the tournament high scratch all-events, he really deserves a headline for breaking the 2200 all-events barrier, which is not an easy feat. Darrell rolled scratch series of 744 in team, 704 in doubles and 763 in singles for the record breaking 2211 total.

In this 100% handicap tournament Darrell (with 218 average) placed third with 108 handicap for 9 games 2319 total. Congratulations to Edwin Miller and Darrell Stogryn for their tremendous feats. We continue reporting the results of 32nd annual SN-CDBA prestigious Deaf Eliminations and Deaf Senior Eliminations.

“That’s How We Roll”LAkE FOrEST — “They’re back!” That same

Marine team that won the 2015 Orange County Open Tournament on February 27/28 has returned once again from their annual Las Vegas All Military Bowl-ing Tournament.

This tournament featured The Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force, and DOD Personel. They decided to re-enter the Orange County Tournament with the intention of defending their title. This tournament will be hosted at the Lake Forest Bowling Center. This year the team had a slight problem with personel, so they had to add a secondary bowler to split up the father/son team of Lanny and Brandon ross.

We were fortunate enough to get Brian Delzeith, a very well established (super sub) palm bowler. The elder statemen of the group still remained the same M/SGT roy Coleman, GYSGT James Mabus and SSGT Lanny ross. I can tell you that once again they put on a show and brought their A game. For this team event, they shot 2933 points which launched them into 1st place for the 2nd year in a row.

For the doubles event roy and James came in 1st place once again with a score of 1584 points. The other two teammates of Lanny and Brian came in 26th place out of 117 places. All four of them placed in all events. Because of their abilities to win this event a second time, they have adapted a new motto that states “They can no longer shut us out.” Facing adversities and fighting back to the end is what we know how to do.

They were also proud to represent the Marine Corp with their back to back victory over all of the bowlers who participated in this outstanding and competitive yearly event. When the team captain was asked how did they manage to hold everything together with such a difficult lane condition, he smiled and replies, that “they had to learn to adapt, adjust quickly and motivate each other to overcome all of the obstacles that stood in our way”. As a matter of fact, we would like to thank all of you for the commoradery that you shared with us and for being a part of bowling history with us. DOWNEY — It wasn’t pretty, but it was enough as Threadworks moved into 1st place in Round 5 by sweep-ing past The Professional Approach 5-0. The US Open pat-tern was playing especially tough tonight as most teams struggled. Paul Varela led the charge to the top, as he fired a very nice 604 series to lead the sweep. Danny Ly led Power House Video Games to a sweep of their own, as they took down Blizz Yogurt 5-0. Danny shot 625, while Greg Neuer led Blizz with 581. Team DV8 is once again in contention for the round lead, as Sam Hitchcock winged his way to 242/623 and led DV8 to a 4-1 win over Linder Insurance.

Linder was paced by Kurt Arakaki 592 and Kevin Val-monte 591. In the best scoring match of the night, Pino’s Pizza prevailed 3-2 as they held off Alhambra Coin Center to win Team Totals by 13. Both teams bowled well, finishing as #1 and #2 scoring teams for the night, and their pair was 250 pins higher than any other two teams combined scoring for a pair. Leading the way for Pino’s was Ramon Torres 627 & Leonard Ruiz 600, while Alhambra was led by Doug Kempt 660 & Steve Gaucin 608. Herzog Insurance took a 4-1 win over the PJ-less Los Altos Trophies team as Mikey Villarreal shot 625 for the winners, while Top Dog for the night went to Los Altos’ Buddy Lucas with a very fine 670.

In the roll off team matches, it was Erickson Foods once again losing the first two games, only to come back strong in Game 3 and not only win the game, but Team Totals. Er-ickson pulls within 2.5 games of holding the #1 seed with the 3-2 win, as nobody managed to shoot 600 series, Herbert

Jones led the way for Keystone Lanes with 589, while Jason Buenviaje shot 563 for Ericksons. Charlie Kinstler shot 614 to lead SYSCO to a 5-0 sweep of Forest Lanes who strug-gled all night to catch SYSCO. Mason Man O’Lantern Sher-man topped Forest with 589. American Harvest Vodka out shot CASAMIGO’S Tequila and won 4-1 as Kevin Jones rolled 588, while Vernon Adams topped the Tequila team with 565. Mike Jennings shot 594 to lead Tifco Industries to a 4-1 win over BOWLIUM, who had the pair’s high series, Craig Stevens with 623. Matt Mosley powered his way to 255 & 638 to lead Cook’s Bowling Supply to a 5-0 sweep over J.A.T. DeeRonn Booker led the Junior Amateur Tour team with 549. In the final pairing, it was GJC Services win-ning 3 points as Juan Zavala topped his squad with 511.

Sidepot winners were Game 1 – Sam Hitchcock 242 Game 2 –Jason Buenviaje 226 however the Financial Advi-sor’s pot was won by Buddy Lucas 225 for $240 with Leon-ard Ruiz Jr. 2nd place with 223 for $100. Game 3 Super Pot went to Mikey Villarreal 255, quite the contrast from last week where you needed 11 strikes or more to win. The TRUE ANCHOR award goes to a new winner, Barry Couch Jr. collected the honors with a 3 game set of 361.

One more week on the dreaded US Open shot to try and move into the Round Lead, improve your standing, or move up the ladder in the Roll Off seedings. I’m sure most can’t wait for May to get here, since we will be finished with this pattern. Hope to see you all down at Del Rio next Monday in Downey. Have a blessed week everyone!

DOWNEY—The bowlers took to the lanes for the 2nd week of the 5th round in the Brunswick Invitational with a rare opportunity to throw strikes in bunches, as the league used the house shot pattern on this night. And, they didn’t miss the chance, as scores were as high as they’d been all season. Leading the way was Jon Diso. Jon missed on his first ball of the night, leaving a ten. He missed on his fill shot in game three, leaving another ten pin. His only other miss was a 3-9 in the 6th frame of game three. The other 33 shots all carried, as he posted 290-300-277 for an amazing 867 series that included a string of 28 strikes at one point.

Jon’s set led the Forest Lanes team to a five game sweep over Pino’s Pizza. In addition to Jon’s 867, Gip Lentine added 238-255-255/748 to help out. For Pino’s, Leonard Ruiz Jr. shot a 741 stepladder of 248-247-246. As a team, Pino’s averaged just over 220 for the night, and still lost total’s by over 200 pins! That’s a tough draw and a bad break for them as we head into the home stretch of the season.

On the top pair at the start of the night, Linder’s Insurance met up with Los Altos Trophy. These were two of the three teams to start the round 5-0 last week. Los Altos continued their winning streak, at Linder’s expense, and improved to 10-0 with a clean sweep. All three games were within a couple marks, includ-ing the first that was won by only two pins. It isn’t easy to get swept and only lose totals by 54. That’s a close match. Juan Zavala of Los Altos Trophy led the pair with 255-246/690. Jason Buenviaje subbed for Los Altos and added in 248-242/687. Kurt Arakaki led Linder’s with 687 in the defeat.

The other 5-0 team coming into the night was Herzog Insurance, but they quickly fell back into the field after getting beat 4 games to 1 by Sysco. Sysco won the first two games and had a 265 pin lead for totals heading into the third game. Jeffrey Shepherd, of Herzog Insurance, got hot the third game for 256 to prevent the sweep. Gabriel Martinez led the pair, pacing Sysco with 258-268-217/743. With the win, Sysco improves to 8-2 in their chase for one of the final playoff spots. Sysco will battle with Linder’s Insurance next week on the top pair.

The next pair included a match-up of two teams that went 4-1 last week. Threadworks versus Alhambra Coin Center. Eric Snow got Threadworks off to a great start, shooting 300 in the first game, leading them to a 157 pin victory. Alhambra chopped more than 100 pins off that lead with a big win in game #2, led by Doug Kempt’s 255. The third game was a tight battle, but Threadworks pulled it out by 14 pins to seal the match as well, 4 games to 1. Eric Snow led the pair with 725. Eric actually had two 300’s on Monday, as he bowled another one in the early league before the Brunswick began. On top of that, during game two of the Brunswick, he converted the 7-10 split. Quite a night for him!

Wowo’s Smoking Hot BBQ is another team that has been disappointed more often than not this season, but has new life in the 5th round. They improved to

8-2 after beating Relax-Release-Repeat, 4-1. Wowo’s won the first two, and had a 250 pin lead for totals. They were unable to finish the sweep though, as Harry Wong and his 260 finish had other ideas. Harry finished with 731 for series as well. Greg Neuer was the top shooter on the pair, leading Wowo’s with 268-279-202/749. Brandon Kraye and Mike Cammarata added 690 and 680 respectively to help in the victory.

Erickson Foods took four out of five games from J.A.T. Scores weren’t nearly as high on this pair as they were on some of the others. The exception to that statement was Michelle King. Michelle struck her way to 279-244-258 for a 781 series that led the pair by a wide margin. David Yamauchi led J.A.T. with 224-233-249/706 but would gladly give back every strike for a couple of wins.

Ketel One Vodka dropped the second game to GJC Janitorial, but took the other two and totals on their way to four wins. Bobby Hornacek led Ketel One to the victory with his 268-248/712 series.

The final pair of lanes saw Keystone lanes get their first four wins of the round, beating the Cremation Centers of CA, 4-1. The Cremation Centers got off to a great start, winning game one with a nice 915 score. It was all Keystone after that though. Jared Lawrence of Keystone Lanes had the lone 700 on the pair, shooting 237-239-257/733.

As for the round winners, the Professional Approach widened the gap on the field as they charge towards the #1 seed in the playoffs. On this night, they swept all five games from Cook’s Bowling Supply. Billy Myers Jr. led the way with 268-201-255/724. Art Jones Jr. helped with 691. Brian Main had a solid set for Cook’s, shooting 247-266/713. Cook’s remains in 2nd place overall and will have another crack at the Pro Approach team next week on the 4th round pattern that was their strongest of the season.

DV8 gained ground on 3rd place, as they beat Don Julio Tequila. DV8 took 4 out of 5 games, including a league leading 1006 in the final game. Jeff Carr bowled for DV8 in Scott Poddig’s place on Monday, and led the pair with 268-224-277/769. Ashkan Tahvildaran helped DV8 as well with 268/707. Buddy Lucas and Bobby Campagnale were both over 700 for Don Julio, but it wasn’t enough to get their team more than the one victory. These two teams will face each other again next week, with only half a game separating them in the overall standings now.

Sidepot winners included Eric Snow in the first game with his 300 game. Sec-ond game and the Financial Advisors Pot both went to Jon Diso, also for a 300. Greg Neuer came in 2nd place in the Financial Advisors Pot with 279. The final pot, the Super Pot, was won by Jon Diso. He shot 277 the last game and won an additional $234 for this one.

As mentioned earlier, the league will bowl on the El Paso USBC Open Pattern next week as the league gets closer and closer to the finish. Come check out the action at Del Rio Lanes in Downey beginning at 8:30 next Monday night.
