  • From The Desk of Msgr. Matthew Mitas: REMEMBER THAT OCTOBER IS THE MONTH OF THE MOST HOLY ROSARY! AMERICAN SAINT NIGHT Plan on it. Book it. It’s official. The next in our series of ethnic foods to honor indigenous saints will be on Friday, Nov. 17, which falls between the feast days of two American saints: St. Frances Cabrini (the first U.S. citi-zen to be canonized) and Ste. Philippine Duchesne (our local girl, the patroness of Florissant). The menu will be decidedly Yankee, consisting of: Pot Roast w. carrots & spuds, fried chicken, pineapple honey ham, mac & cheese (of course!), baked corn casserole, sweet/sour coleslaw, knot roll & butter, home-made carrot cake, gooey butter cake, and apple pie (a la mode, of course!). The chef is again that master of the stove, Don Krause, and the price will be $15. We’ll serve from 4:30-7:00PM, but this time we’ll be in the gym. ON PILGRIMAGE Your pilgrim parishioners, led by their pilgrim pastor, are gone this weekend and will return Thursday even-ing. Many thanks for your well-wishes and prayers. And, as I wrote here last Sunday, taking my place is… …FOOD FOR THE POOR Fr. Thomas Bouterie will visit our parish this weekend and will make an appeal for his charitable organiza-tion, Food for the Poor. I know that you will welcome him and generously respond to his outreach on behalf of the neediest among us. UPCOMING EVENTS - November 1: All Saints’ Day, a holy day of obligation - November 5: Doughnuts! -November 7: Next catechism class -November 17: Eve of the feast of Ste. Philippine Duchesne, American Food Night, in honor of Ste. Philippine and St. Frances Cabrini - November: Pictures for a new parish photo directory to be taken (the last one was in ‘12) -(TBD): Pilgrimage to the EWTN Network complex in Alabama. We’re working out the details now, but it should wind up being a 3-day sojourn by bus for our parishioners who would like to see and experience this vibrant and vital exercise of American Catholicism. As I’ve indicated, we have nothing planned, not even the dates for the pilgrimage, but most likely, it will be next spring. I expect it will cost around $350. QUIZ-A-CATHOLIC While I’m gone, I decided to leave you with a different sort of quiz; with these questions, there are no answers. Try to wrap your brain around them, anyway:

    1. If corn oil comes from corn, where does baby oil come from? 2. Do Roman nurses refer to IV’s as 4’s? (I’m going to check on this when we’re in Rome!) 3. Could there possibly exist a universe in which there were no hypothetical situations?

Why isn’t “phonetic” spelled the way it sounds? 8. If you ate pasta with an antipasto, would you still be hungry? 9. Shouldn’t there be a shorter word for “monosyllabic”? 10. Is there another word for “synonym”? 11. Why is it called “tourist season” if you can’t shoot them? 12. If the black box survives the plane crash, why isn’t the whole plane made out of them? 13. Why do they put the Braille dots on the keypads of drive-up ATM’s? 14. Why does the nurse always wipe the con vict’s arm right before the lethal injection? 15. QUOTES OF THE WEEK

(All of this week’s pithy insights are from the wit and wisdom of our fellow Missourian, Mark Twain:)

“I don’t like to commit myself about heaven and hell; you see, I have friends in both of those plac-es.”

“Suppose you were an idiot. Now suppose you are a member of Congress; but I repeat myself.”

“Facts are stubborn, but statistics are more pliable”
