LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK If the coin belongs to Caesar, then give it to him. Paying taxes is often unpleasant, but requires little self-investment. We know that a portion of our income must go back to the government, but what then, exactly, belongs to God? God does not seek our financial resources. What belongs to God is something that we sometimes want to keep to ourselves or divide in different places. What belongs to God is our hearts. We owe everything to God, even our very being. Without God we are nothing. God patiently continues to tell the world: “I am the LORD and there is no other, there is no God besides me.” How do we unite the varied allegiances of our hearts into one under God? (Cycles of Faith)

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY. The Holy Father writes, “World Mission Sunday invites us to reflect anew on the mission at the heart of the Christian faith.” To support Pope Francis’ World Mission a second collection

will be taken at all Masses this weekend (October 21-22). Special envelopes can also be found at the Welcome Desk.

A ROSE was placed near the Mary statue by Holy Redeemer’s Bereavement Committee in memory of Mary Ann Knapke. Please

remember her family in your prayers.

THANK YOU to everyone who

supported the Mission

Breakfast last week, October

15. The donations will be used

for the hurricane relief effort in

Puerto Rico.

THANK YOU to Fr. Dorn and the parishioners of Holy Redeemer for their prayers and support during the illness and passing of our wife and mother, Kelley Wendeln. Thank you, too, to those who donated food and desserts for the luncheon. It was very much appreciated. Fred Wendeln and family

FEAST OF ALL SAINTS,

November 1, is a holy day of

obligation. Masses will be

celebrated on Wednesday, November 1 at

12:05 and 7:00 p.m.

ON NOVEMBER 2, the Church celebrates the Commemoration of the

Faithful Departed (All Souls). Holy Redeemer will have a special celebration at the 7:00 p.m. Mass that night. Letters to families of parishioners who have died in the last year have been mailed. If you did not receive a letter, please contact the parish office. Holy Redeemer would also like to recognize family members of parishioners who have died in the last year with a special candle. If you would like to remember a loved one from your family, please contact Brad Feltz in the parish office with their name for a candle. Candles may be taken home after the 7:00pm Mass on Thursday, November 2nd. EVANGELIZATION AND SERVICE COMMISSION will meet on Tuesday, October 31 at 7:00 p.m. in the conference room. Plans for the 2018 parish dinner will be discussed. Anyone interested in helping plan and organize is welcome to attend. For more information, please contact Becky Homan at 419-753-3352.

CALLING ALL BLOGGERS or want-to-be bloggers. We have started a Holy Redeemer parish blog (yes, it is live and can be found on the social media page of our new parish website (www.hrcatholic.org)) and would like to hear from our parishioners. If you would like to help or have ideas for the blog, please contact Pam Kaiser or the parish office at [email protected].

OUR GIFT IN RESPONSE TO GOD’S GIFT October 15 – $6,819.25 Adults - $6,070.00 HS/Grade School - $13.80 Anonymous - $735.45 Attendance – 943

BIBLE TIMELINE STUDY: Session 6 (Egypt and Exodus – Part 1) will be November 2nd (7:45 p.m.) or 4th (9:30 a.m.). Read Exodus 1-18. And to go deeper, answer the questions in the book and read what is recommended. Anyone can still join us by contacting the parish office. Please note, all books mentioned in the workbook or by Fr. Dorn are available for purchase at the Cornerstone. If you have not already done so, sign-up for Remind (@hrBible).

BOOK CLUB will meet on Tuesday, November 14 at 6:45 p.m. in the conference room. The Rainbow Comes and Goes, by Anderson Cooper and Gloria Vanderbilt, will be discussed. A brief synopsis: Though Anderson Cooper has always considered himself close to his mother, his intensely busy career as

a journalist for CNN and CBS affords him little time to spend with her. After she suffers a brief but serious illness at the age of ninety-one, they resolve to change their relationship by beginning a year-long conversation unlike any they had ever had before. The result is a correspondence of surprising honesty and depth in which they discuss their lives, the things that matter to them, and what they still want to learn about each other. All are welcome. For more information, contact Linda Kuenning at 419-302-2223.

LECTORS are asked, please, to pick up their new workbooks in the sacristy. The workbooks are helpful toward a more effective proclamation of God’s word.

Minutes from the Pastoral Council meeting on September 11 can be found in the glass enclosed bulletin board in the entrance of the church. If you would like a copy, please contact the parish office.

RED CROSS REJUVENATION PROJECT: Many of us have enjoyed the outdoor garden Red Crosses that were constructed by our Holy Redeemer Youth quite a few years ago. Time and weather continue to take a toll and we have noticed that many could use a fresh coat of paint and maybe even a new replacement cross. For a Senior Service Project, Sara Champagne has offered to paint, reconstruct, or create a new cross for those of you that would like an update or those of you who were not offered a cross years ago. If interested please contact Sara or Linda by email at [email protected] or text/call 419-953-0170. Thank you.

MASS SCRIPTURE READINGS & REFLECTIONS: October 22 – Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Isaiah 45:1, 4-6 I am the LORD and there is no other, there is no God besides me. It is I who arm you, though you know me not, so that toward the rising and the setting of the sun people may know that there is none besides me. I am the LORD, there is no other. (Is 45:5-6) Cyrus was the king of Persia, who God “anointed” to defeat the Babylonians and to release Israel from captivity in Babylon. Why do you think God chose a foreign king to rescue Israel? Thessalonians 1:1-5b We give thanks to God always for all of you, remembering you in our prayers, unceasingly calling to mind your work of faith and labor of love and endurance in hope of our Lord Jesus Christ, before our God and Father. (1 Thes 1:2-3) Today’s reading is the opening words to the earliest of Paul’s letters, First Thessalonians, written in AD 50. How does Paul speak of the Trinity – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? I can do all things in him who strengthens me. (Phil 4:13) Paul informs the Philippians he has learned the secret of living well under any circumstance: find strength in Christ. How is this true in your life? Matthew 22:1-14 or 22:1-10 “Show me the coin that pays the census tax.” Then they handed him the Roman coin. He said to them, “Whose image is this and whose inscription?” They replied, “Caesar’s.” At that he said to them, “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” (Mt 22:19-21) Jesus’ parable of the wedding feast ends in a startling way. How do you know if you are properly dressed for the wedding feast (the return of Christ)?

Religious Education:

THIS COMING WEDNESDAY, October 25, students in grades 1-3 will have their All Saints/Halloween Party. They will be learning about different Saints who led very unusual lives and never wavered on their faith, even to the point of being put to death. As I read these stories I ask myself “Would I ever be able to do what they did”? When your child gets home next week ask them to tell you about one of the Saints they learned about. I promise you it will be an interesting story. THANK YOU, again, to the parents of the second grade students who attended the meeting for First Reconciliation. This is the largest class of 2nd graders we have had since I have been CRE and it was wonderful to see so many parents attend the meeting. What better way to teach our children how important our faith is.

-- Kathy Pape

Holy Redeemer youth in grades seven and eight will be trick or treating for canned goods from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 25. The collected canned goods will be donated to Agape, located in St. Marys, which serves the local community. Last year the youth collected over 1000 cans in one hour. Anyone wishing to donate is invited to turn on their porch light.

Anyone wishing to donate but who will not be home that evening is invited to turn on their porch light and leave their canned goods (bagged) on their porch. Items may also be dropped off at church. Thank you for your support. Holy Redeemer Youth Quarter Auction: Donations are now being accepted for our Quarter Auction which will be held on November 12th in the parish hall at 1:00 p.m. Doors open at 12:15. Admission is $3.00. Concessions will be available. All proceeds will be going to the youth to help them to go on retreats and do service projects throughout the community. Please consider helping with donations such as gift cards, Christmas items, seasonal items, yard or home supplies, craft items, jewelry, purses, religious items, baked goods, etc. Please drop off all items by October 29th at the parish office For more information, contact Jenny Sailer at [email protected] or Susan Krieg at 419-733-5776.

The rosary is being prayed 25 minutes before every

Mass at Holy Redeemer.

SAVE THE DATE: Catholic Men’s Conference,

February 24, 2018, Columbus, Ohio. Speakers include

Dr. Scott Hahn, Jeff Cavins and Chris Stefanick.

Church Feast Days & Memorials October 23 to 29: 23 – St. John of Capistrano, Priest 24 – St. Anthony Mary Claret, Bishop 28 – Sts. Simon and Jude, Apostles DID YOU KNOW? In March of 1993, Fr. Trick saw a

need for people to be joined in unity prayer. Various

crises and challenges had occurred in the community

to prompt the need for unity prayer: tragic deaths,

injuries, death of parents and loved ones, family

struggles, tensions in parish, to name a few. These

were traumatic events happening to good people.

A prayer circle was formed consisting of eighteen

ladies. Team leaders were Mary Alice Youngs and

Hilda Niekamp. One or the other of the team leaders

may be called to start a prayer. The prayer is then

passed on to each of the ladies.

There have been healings from the Lord. The Lord

answers all our prayers, but not always the way we

want. Sometimes his way is to take a person home to

heaven. People call us, thanking us for this Ministry

of Prayer. We thank the Lord who is the “Divine

Healer”. The ladies on the Prayer Circle have truly

been blest by the Lord.

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

“Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” The Pharisees, full of malice, were trying to “entrap Jesus in speech.” They concocted a question that flattered him, saying, “You teach the way of God in accordance with the truth,” but which also put him in a position to be in big trouble if he challenged the Roman laws. Jesus, of course, escaped the trap with his brilliant reply. We can appreciate the wisdom of his response, but more importantly, we can appreciate what it means for us. To repay to Caesar, in this case, meant to give appropriate allegiance to the secular authorities. We too are under such authority, and although Uncle Sam is different than Caesar in countless ways, the fact remains that as constituents of this country who enjoy its many benefits, we are also called to extend a certain kind of tribute to our government. Taxes, yes, but more than that too. The loyalty and patriotism that offers our gifts in service to the good of our nation is also a tribute we Christians should make in good faith. Only when a law of our land contradicts the moral principles of God do we have to follow our primary allegiance instead, namely, our allegiance to Christ. Unfortunately, in our day we live under certain national laws that do conflict with the truth about human dignity, and thus a tension exists for us. But the course is clear. We must repay “to God what belongs to God” by defending the truth even when it may be unpopular. This kind of courage is what built the Church in those early centuries of persecution when practicing our faith was against the law. Heaven forbid this should ever happen to us. But if it does, we know what must be done.

(Cycles of Faith)

DISCOVERING JOYFUL CATHOLICISM: Fr. Nathan Cromley will be at St. Remy Church, Russia, to lead us in Discovering Joyful Catholicism. Jesus promised his followers that they would have “complete joy.” How do we have this joy, and what does it mean? Following Jesus can be costly. What do we gain? Why should we choose Jesus

over what our world offers us? How does our Catholic Faith bring us to this “complete joy”? The apostles and martyrs faced opposition and persecution, even death, yet were full of joy. Why? How? This 3-day mission will be held Monday-Wednesday, November 6-8, 7:00-8:30 p.m. each night.

LITURGICAL RENEWAL for all Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion presented by Fr. Ryan Ruiz and Dr. Jessie Thomas will be held at St. Michael in Fort Loramie on Monday, November 6, 7-9 p.m. For more information or to register, go to http://www.catholiccincinnati.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Liturgical-Renewal-2017-Flyer-Registration.pdf.

Some services include: temporary housing, transportation, food, clothing, supplies, adoption information, post abortive counseling, and parenting classes.
