Week by Week through The Year of Mercy
Today’s Gospel graces us with a beautiful prayer that can make
every day of our lives a jubilee of mercy: “O God, be merciful to
me a sinner: (Luke 18;13). Religious Israelites despised the tax
collector ho prayed it, for collaborating with Gentile occupiers
and handling currency that bore the “divine” emperor’s graven
image. But the Pharisee's long-winded self-congratulation, mixed
with self-righteous condemnation, was no “prayer” at all.
“The Pharisee...spoke this prayer to himself’(18:11, em-
phasis added). Praying the tax collector’s simple, sin-
cere, succinct cry for mercy acknowledge our own sin-
fulness, and “welcomes” other sinners as brothers and
sisters with who we can identify, even empathize, ech-
oing Pope Francis’ famous comment about not being
the one to judge. Indeed, the tax collector “went home
justified” (18:14), that is, restored to God’s friend-
ship, for God’s mercy is not prize achieved but gift re-
ceived. “Let your prayer be brief: for tax collector, prodi-
gal son, and dying thief were all reconciled to God by
single phrase! (Saint John Climacus, 7th century).
Dios, sé propicio a mí, pecador: (Lucas 18; 13).
sola frase! (San Juan Clímaco, siglo 7).

What happens on World Mission Sunday Your prayers and gener-
ous support on World Mission Sunday directly benefit the Mission
Church today. That support reaches clinics caring for the sick and
dying, orphanages providing a place of safety and shelter, schools of-
fering education from kindergarten through high school. Your help provides for seminarians preparing for the priesthood, and religious
Sisters and Brothers in formation programs. All of this takes place in
1,111 mission dioceses, mostly in Africa and Asia, where the poorest
of the poor receive an education and health care while experiencing the
loving heart of our Lord through the service of priests, religious, and
lay faithful.

Healthy suspicion can protect those who are vulnerable to abuse.
When it comes to fighting against abuse, prevention is the first
step. For adults who work with kids, it’s important to recognize
the signs of those who could be vulnerable to predators or abuse.
Using healthy suspicion can help prevent access to these kids as
well. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article Awareness and Educa-

IN JOYFUL SERVICE This weekend we cele-
brate World Mission Sunday. We are reminded of
the missionary nature of the Church, and are en-
joined to support it with our prayers and financial
assistance. We are missionaries by virtue of our
baptism. Pope Francis in his apostolic exhorta-
tion, Evangelii Gaudium ( The Joy of the Gospel),
in dealing on the Church’s Missionary Transfor-
mation, says that “evangelization takes place in
obedience to the missionary mandate of Jesus:
‘Go therefore and make disciples of all nations
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you(Mt.28:19
-20). He goes further by saying that “in these verses we see how the risen
Christ sent followers to preach the Gospel in every time and place, so
that faith in him might spread to every corner of the earth. The apostolic
exhortation focuses on the aspect of joy in this mission of evangelization.
We need to spread the joy of the gospel people who experience grief and
despair, who are tired and stressed or simply losing fervor and enthusi-
asm for life. The pope wishes to counter this by saying that the Gospel
joy which enliven the community of disciples is a missionary joy. As
evangelizers, we should be people of joy. With a seeming sense of hu-
mor, he quips that “an evangelizer must never look like someone who
has just come back from a funeral! Rather, let us recover, and deepen our
enthusiasm, that ‘delightful and comforting joy of evangelizing , even
when it is in tears that we must sow. And may the world of our time ,
which is searching, sometimes with anguish, sometimes with hope, be
enabled to received the good news not from evangelizers who are deject-
ed, discouraged, impatient and anxious, but from ministers of the Gospel
whose lives glow with fervor, who have first received the joy of Christ.
As we celebrate World Mission Sunday, let it be with joy in our hearts -
the joy that comes from the source, our loving, compassion and merciful
Lord, Jesus Christ. He is the Gospel of Joy and Mercy. I draw inspiration
and renewed enthusiasm from the exhortation of the pope as I continue
to live my life and mission as a priest. My heart is filled with joy and
gratitude to the Lord for the gift of the priesthood as I celebrate my 25th
anniversary. And there is certainly joy in serving the parish community
of Queen of Angels. Indeed, it is a joyful service to the Gospel of Joy!

¿Sabia Usted?
