NO FAVORITES: SCOTT HAHN REFLECTS ON THE 30TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME By Scott Hahn, St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology
Jesus draws a blunt picture in today's Gospel. The Pharisee's prayer is almost a parody of the thanksgiving psalms (see for example Psalms 30,118). Instead of praising God for His mighty works, the Pharisee congratulates himself for his own deeds, which he presents to God in some detail. The tax collector stands at a distance, too ashamed even to raise his eyes to God (see Ezra 9:6). He prays with a humble and contrite heart (see Psalm 51:19). He knows that before God no one is righteous, no one has cause to boast (seeRomans 3:10; 4:2). We see in the Liturgy today one of Scripture's abiding themes—that God "knows no favorites," as today's First Reading tells us (see 2 Chronicles 19:7; Acts 10:34-35; Romans 2:11). God cannot be bribed (see Deuteronomy 10:17). We cannot curry favor with Him or impress Him—even with our good deeds or our faithful observance of religious duties such as tithing and fasting. If we try to exalt ourselves before the Lord, as the Pharisee does, we will be brought low (see Luke 1:52). This should be a warning to us—not to take pride in our piety, not to slip into the self-righteousness of thinking that we're better than others, that we're "not like the rest of sinful humanity." If we clothe ourselves with humility (see 1 Peter 5:5-6)—recognize that all of us are sinners in need of His mercy—we will be exalted (see Proverbs 29:33). The prayer of the lowly, the humble, pierces the clouds. Paul testifies to this in today's Epistle, as He thanks the Lord for giving him strength during his imprisonment. Paul tells us what the Psalmist sings today—that the Lord redeems the lives of His humble servants. We too must serve Him willingly. And He will hear us in our distress, deliver us from evil, and bring us safely to His heavenly kingdom.

Jesús presenta un ejemplo tajante en el Evangelio de hoy. La oración del fariseo es casi una parodia de los salmos de acción de gracias (por ejemplo Salmos 30 y 118). En lugar de bendecir a Dios por sus proezas, el fariseo se felicita por sus propios actos, los cuales presenta detalladamente a Dios. El publicano se para a cierta distancia, demasiado avergonzado para alzar sus ojos a Dios (cfr. Esd 9,6). Ora con un corazón contrito y humillado (cfr. Sal 51,19). Sabe que, ante Dios, nadie es justo, nadie tiene de qué gloriarse (cfr. Rm 3,10; 4,2). En la liturgia de hoy vemos uno de los temas permanentes de la Escritura: que Dios no hace acepción de personas, como nos dice la primera lectura (cfr. 2 Cr 19,7; Hch 10,34-35; Rm 2,11). Dios no puede ser sobornado (cfr. Dt 10,17). No podemos comprar el favor de Dios o impresionarlo, ni siquiera con nuestras buenas obras ni con la observancia fiel de nuestros deberes religiosos, como los diezmos y ayunos. Si tratamos de ensalzarnos ante el Señor, como el fariseo, seremos derribados (cfr. Lc 1,52). Esto debe
ser una advertencia para nosotros y ayudarnos a no ser orgullosos en nuestra piedad; a no caer en la autocomplacencia de pensar que somos mejores que los demás, de que no somos “como el resto de la humanidad pecadora”. Si nos revestimos de humildad (cfr. 1 P 5,5-6) -reconociendo que todos somos pecadores, necesitados de la misericordia de Dios-, seremos exaltados (cfr. Pr 29,23) era 23 no 33. La oración de los pequeños, los humildes, traspasa las nubes. San Pablo testifica esto en la epístola de hoy, cuando agradece al Señor por darle fuerzas durante su prisión. San Pablo nos dice lo que el salmista canta hoy: que el Señor redime las vidas de sus siervos humildes. También nosotros debemos servirle con buena voluntad. Y él nos escuchará en nuestras aflicciones, nos librará del mal y nos conducirá seguros a su Reino celestial.
